Metal Gear Solid HD Collection

Recommended Posts

So last night I was messing around on the PS3 checking the new store content and decided to fire up MGS 1.

Keep in mind, when it came out on PSN I immediately bought it but could never play it all the way through. I tried countless times to play it on my PSP but would get bored rather quickly because I've played it so many times that I remembered everything about it and was pretty much just going through the motions.

But last night something different happened. I realized it as soon as the first codec call. You know the one.

This starts playing

immediately followed by "This is Snake."

For some reason, those two things combined have always felt extremely iconic to me. And last night, the very second I heard them, I just knew.

It's been long enough since I've last played the game that it's become awesome again. :)

I played up until after the fight against Ocelot but had to go to bed. Just came back from class and now I'm ready to jump right back in!

.... right after I do a few hours of math. :(

My favorite MGS is actually 2, but its a shame the series never again got as gritty as MGS1. The game is just a whole other thing from the rest. Theres something very dark, dirty, and strange about it. For 1997, it feels very experimental. Like for once, this was the work of one man instead of a group of people. I know they have nothing in common, but I like to think MGS1 is kind of like the Pulp Fiction of 1990s videogames. Its just out there for its time and it still holds up. As far as im concerned, its THE game that introduced cinematic style to the games that came after. I also think its the first PS1 game that had complete voiceacting for everything. I could be wrong though. Games back then just didnt have style like MGS1 did.

I feel MGS1 has the best story while MGS3 is my favorite overall (story is almost as good, gameplay is perfect).

But I'm also a big fan of MGS2. It doesn't deserve all the hate it gets.

And yeah, I can't think of any big games prior to MGS1 that were as heavily cinematic. I mean, there were games with cutscenes, but Kojima directs his games like they're movies, so the feel is very different.

The main thing with the film analogy is that MGS is the first game to actually be excellent cinematically . It doesn't mimic film and its angles and lighting, but takes the techniques used in film and applies them to a game. All the camera angles are, as well as being great camera angles, totally functional in the context of the game, and are flexible in line with it also.

The bit I always remember is when you climb down out of the air vent after listening to those two guards talk in the hanger/ tank bay area. If you press against the wall on the catwalk to creep under the camera in the corner, the angle is just incredible. Sublimely good. And the engine and colour palette is just so ingeniously together.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I meant by "directs his games like they're movies". But that's a better way to put it.

I started disc 2 last night and saved right as I was about to enter the room where REX is. Seemed like a good place to stop. I was also kinda drunk and it was past 4 AM

I don't have as much time to play as I'd like since I have less than 2 weeks to prepare for a math final and have a shitload of subject to cover since I'm quite a few weeks behind.

But hopefully I'll be able to finish it tonight and get started on MGS2 :D

Youve never played PW? Its great....on the PSP.

The story is fantastic, the production and voiceacting is great, and for the most part the mechanics are alright.

The structure is based around pick up and play. Its meant to be a portable title. The levels are really short, theres tons of micromanaging and leveling up stuff, etc.

Well I just finished MGS3. Still as awesome as I remembered. :)

Now I'm not sure how I should proceed, though. MGS4 or jump right into Peace Walker.

I mean, I've been playing them in order of release, so MGS4 should comes first. But I'm thinking PW's PSP graphics might be a bit harder to overlook if I play it right after an amazing looking game like MGS4.

In comparison, coming from MGS3's PS2 graphics probably won't be that huge of a gap.

Eh..... Quebec.

Not sure what the actual time zone name is.

But if I remember correctly, you're like, on the opposite end of Canada, right? So we probably have like a 4 hours gap or something.

I actually started PW earlier and halfway through the tutorial turned it off because I felt a sudden urge to play MGS4 instead

But considering the portable/pick-up-and-play nature of Peace Walker, I think I'll start it anyway and play them both at the same time instead of waiting until I finish MGS4.

I bought the 360 version about 2 weeks ago, started with Subsistence, but then jumped right to Peace Walker. Almost done with Peace Walker, got 1 more ending to go through and maybe I'm the only weirdo, but i love all the micro-managing there is. Even though it's kinda silly I enjoy seeing my MSF teams go into battle (Outer Ops) and watch in suspense. Many of their battle decisions just make scream "Why", but it's still a fun experience. The micro-managing is all very tedious in the beginning, but as you start to kidnap/steal recruit higher rank soldiers and engineers, you can see the many possibilities and how easier some boss battles are.

I recently tried Versus Ops> Quick Match, a Base Mission of 2 vs 2, my teammate had plenty good weapons while the other team had no idea what was going on. There's some ugly weapon change lag, maybe it was the host, but if it's not then it can be very crippling. I'm getting close to taking on on the "Type II" and "Custom" battles. Pupa, Chrysalis and Cocoon are no longer a problem, I've been able to 'S' rank those battles so far, Peace Walker (Basilisk) still proves problematic though specially since I'm stupid enough to go in without any recovery items. I fear the "Monster Hunter" Quests though *shivers*

Eh, there are some stipulations. For one, youre not going to get easy trophies from this.

First of all, if you want to transfar, both save files have to be from the same PSN account. No exceptions.

Also, MGSHD for the PS3 was updated last tuesday and what that did was make it so saves prior to the update would disable you from getting trophies in the Vita version with those files. Like I said, theyre trying to stop people from getting easy trophies. So if you got your platinum in MGS3 on the PS3 last month or last week or whenever, when you transfer that save youre not going to automatically get a platinum in the Vita version. You cant unlock any trophies with an old MGSHD PS3 save file at all.

What transfarring IS for, is if you start a new Vita or PS3 game, you CAN get trophies in both versions and those will transfer over. so if you start a MGS3 game on the Vita or the PS3 today, you can get a trophy on either system and when you transfer the save, youll get the same trophy int he opposite version.

In a nutshell: Stuff you did in MGSHD for PS3 BEFORE The Vita version came out won't get you any trophies in any way on the Vita.
