Little Pirate
I grew up on Sierra games. One of the first PC games I played was the Kings Quest series. And I have to say--these games are probably the more brutal point and click adventure games you can get. You forget ONE item and near the end you're screwed and you have to start all over. Still, though, I've always admired Sierra games for being imaginative and in-depth. The other game I played like crazy was Lands of Lore II: Guardians of Destiny. Sadly, it's a underrated game and Westwood Studios was bought out by EA Games. But out of all the games I've played, this one was probably my favorite PC game ever. Mister Jack
This should probably go in the retro forum? I think?
Little Pirate
This should probably go in the retro forum? I think? I was thinking that, but I thought it was more aimed at arcade games and the such. I guess it'll get moved or deleted then.
Mister Jack
I dunno, this is sort of a grey area. Can we get a mod to sort out where this should go?
deanb
It's about PC games. The same as while a NES title would be considered retro, it's a Nintendo title and belongs in Nintendo. So if this is about PC games, regardless of age (Unless we're talking PC's like the C64) then it should go in here. On a side note, Sierra were pretty cool. F-U Vivendi. Bouchart
Sierra published Outpost 2, an underrated RTS.
Mister Jack
I can't get a good video, but I used to play this PC game called Gazillionaire. It was basically a buying/trading business sim in outer space. Pretty simple gameplay. You bought ships, bought low, sold high, deal with banks and lending companies, and pray like hell that your trading vessels don't get hijacked by space pirates. TheForgetfulBrain
I grew up on Sierra games. One of the first PC games I played was the Kings Quest series. GAH, Sierra. If there's one thing in gaming I truly lament, it's the downfall of Sierra. I actually grew up in the tiny town that Sierra Online was based and knew a number of people who had relatives who worked there. One of my friends was always getting Sierra games before they released because his Dad worked there. Growing up obsessed with video games, it was my absolute dream to work there when I was older. But no, they had to get bought out and sold left and right until there was nothing left, and their original properties had been either abandoned or horribly molested (twice, for poor Leisure Suit Larry). It's really a shame - I have such fond memories of all of those games. I could go on for ages, but as cripplingly buggy as those games were, they had some of the best writing and most heart I've ever seen. I had just about every Commander Keen game. My favorite was "Goodbye Galaxy" because it was more sci-fi with robots. One of my best friends had the Commander Keen games, and I was always wanting to go over to his house and play them. I'd never seen anything like it then. (But I was five and living in the mountains, so, I guess that would be pretty obvious). Nostalgia's gonna kill me someday. Mister Jack
I used to play the 2D Duke Nukem games and Wolfenstein on my friend's old piece of shit computer, which was better than my computer, which didn't exist. Also there was this sweet vertical shooter jet game called Raptor, I think. We played that too. Rather, we played the first chapters because all we had was the shareware. Anybody remember shareware? Did anybody here ever actually buy the rest of the floppies?
Baguette
RollerCoaster Tycoon was probs one of the games I constantly played. Still never finished all the scenarios though, shuttle loop spam can only get me so far.
Mister Jack
Oh, and I had Simant and Simcity 2000 but I played Simant more because my cities always had a fucking water shortage no matter how many pipes I put down. Pissed me off. Now that I have OCD, it would be unbearable.
TheForgetfulBrain
Anybody remember shareware? Did anybody here ever actually buy the rest of the floppies? My first experience with Doom, Descent, Heretic and Warcraft all came on one convenient Shareware disc - it came with some Soundblaster card my dad bought. When my mom saw what Doom looked like though, well, that's a whole story in and of itself. (tl;dr version is I learned how to install video games on my own as a young kid) I also remember when PC Gamer magazine would send out issues with a disk that would have something like 300 shareware demos on it. Those were the days. Wish I still had all that stuff... it would be fun to go through and install them now, but I gave all my old games and discs to the girl I was dating in high school once I moved to college for... no reason I can figure out now. rainetemplar
Oh my god, I loved Commander Keen! I can still hear the jumping sound effects in my head. Also it's not that old, but who remembers/played the Broken Sword series? The first two were amazing in my opinion, it went downwards when they started making the games in 3D. I still play these games from time to time. Never gets old!
Hot Heart
I remember seeing this game as a kid and finding it hilarious you could just walk around in a wet suit, Groucho Marx glasses and cowboy hat. Oh, the simple joys of childhood. One of the earlier LucasArts adventure games.
Yantelope
Glad to see a few other Sierra fanboys. I had the original King's Quest on PC Jr. I am a huge fan of the Quest for Glory games too. Space Quest was also great. You're right about them being brutal too. The first time I played Monkey Island I was thinking "dang I haven't died 10 times yet".
Bouchart
Yes, I remember Raptor: Call of the Shadows. It had the finest name for a shop in any videogame: Harold's Death Emporium.
Mister Jack
I should try to download it from an abandonware site or something. Game was pretty good and I think it'd still hold up.
Dev_Revenge
Sierra made me appreciate what my computer monitor was capable of. The Kings Quest series was always so beautiful, around V I just thought graphics couldn't get any better. In some ways they still haven't. I always preferred Space Quest personally, the humor in that series was great. Also, Leisure Suit Larry obviously, but SQ was my favorite series of the 3. Commander Shepard
Since someone brought up, one of the classic RTS games that spawned a legacy. The trailer that got us all hooked: Shine on, Command & Conquer, shine on. (Except C&C4, you can burn in hell.)

Little Pirate
One thing you can usually love or hate about Sierra games is that happy little phrase they give you on their many ways to die a gruesome, unexpected death. Laura Bow is one of the series I never played, but just watched the whole thing and that was pretty great. I miss the snarky/witty writing and the midi of the era. Little Pirate
I had to go and dig out a scene from Lands of Lore 2. This game was made in 1997. AWESOME GAME. (Game intro/gameplay.) Next to the dragon flight and the opening, this is probably the best cutscenescene in the game.
