Latest dashboard update is a doozy

Fucking seriously. Honestly it's a good thing that the dashboard is only a medium to get what I want to get [aka download arcade games, play my inserted game, or start netflix]. Once I start seeing ads pop-up while I'm playing my video game itself, that's where they cross the line [and they're already fucking close].

I'm hoping Netflix gets patched soon enough. The new look and the removed features of the current incarnation aren't enough to make me cancel, but are enough to piss me off beyond all belief.

I will say I'm okay with in-game ads if they're well integrated. Billboards in street racing games are fine, as are the side-of-the-field ads in sports games. Basically if it's depicting part of the real world and that part would have ads irl then I'm fine with them putting ads there in the game. The ads should NOT get special treatment though (ie those ads in like FEAR or whatever game it was where everything in the world would get bullet marks on it, but the ads would not).

Oh wait. I have 93 friends on XBL and NONE of them are idiots! Oh boy!

Seriously. If you have nothing to contribute to the fucking subject, just get out of here. We get it. You fucking love XMB and Sony. We get that. Though all it does in this thread is garner more -1's for your account. Just shut the fuck up.

Oh that's intended for Fabilesse.

My brain is a super-effective ad filter. It's like they're not even there. The only time I notice ads is if they're actually in my way (ie obstructing something I want to click on, or preventing my video from starting, that kind of thing).

Also: Who the fuck cares about ads? Seriously? Am I the only person that doesn't care?

Who gives a shit if your Deus Ex has ads? That's fucking life. Deal with it.

I personally don't mind the ads all that much. I'm all for ads in loading screens IF they can make the game cheaper for me to purchase. If there is no benefit to the ads, and they are like in driving games where they are brands to put on your car, or billboards or really anything then thats fine too. Once they become intrusive is when I will get irritated, but that hasn't happened yet.

Like I said, the market place square should be the game's square. The main focus of my Xbox is to play games, and that should be the first thing I see when I boot it up.

As far as having only idiots on Xbox live, that is generalization that holds no grounds nor any proof to back it up. I could say the same about PC gamers or PS3 gamers, but I don't. I have a PS3 as well, I prefer my Xbox because Live is almost 100% of what an online service on consoles should be, the PSN is not as close. PSN is great, and before I had Xbox Live, I thought it was equal in quality, but after a year on Xbox Live, I have started to sing a different tune.

Saying the only reason we stay on the Xbox is because we cannot afford the other options is purely ignorant, and a mighty large assumption. I had the PS3 first, had a gaming PC which broke and realized that I didn't need to replace it because I was content with my PS3/Xbox.

From what I hear, Hulu Plus also has ads? Netflix doesnt. They both cost money. That just doesnt make sense to me. WHy should one have it while the other one does?

The reason Hulu Plus has ads when Netflix doesn't is that Hulu Plus gets new TV episodes within hours of them airing, whereas Netflix waits months or years if it gets them at all.

Strangelove, what you said is probably the least fanboyish statement ever. All my friends are ps3 users. The only reason I have a 360, I'll reiterate, is because the whole "feel" of the console is better fitted for my taste.

If you had just written an entire wall at how Sony rules and Microsoft drools then that would have been fanboyish.

Haven't played with the new update that much, but so far I haven't even been able to find a video ad in banner form... good, because I can't stand those...

I'm not outraged, or thrilled by it yet. I'd like to be able to view my games not as huge chunky icons, but as a list - especially if I'm viewing them alphabetically anyway. Also, a few games don't have cover art, so I just get a tiny icon in a big frame. That said, it's about equivalent to how we do it on PS3, and likewise, it's about as fast if you hold down the direction and let it scroll.

It's kind of dumb that you can view all your demos, but you can no longer filter to only see non-demos. I guess they want people to forget something is a demo, be disappointed, and buy it?

I came into 360 around the 2nd last dashboard, so for me when I look at the functionality, it's always been pretty similar to the XMB, just "louder." (More big images and distractions.) I like the new placement of top-level headings - it makes it feel even more XMB to me, since I can now very quickly navigate anywhere with just directions. I haven't delved deep, but it seems there's less multi-level menu-diving now, which is good, because after some Marketplace sessions, I'd back out 3-4 or more times to get back home. The friends list inexplicably went the other way, so now I can kinda see it, but have to open friends, IN friends to really see them.

Haven't read up on beacons, but if it is what I think, it actually seems like a pretty good idea.

About the button swap - In the old menu, from your games list, Y meant "play" and A meant "select" (show details) ...but then on the home screen, Y meant "game details" and A was labelled "select" but actually starts the game instead of showing its details like it did in the other menu. I haven't scrutinized the new dashboard closely, but hopefully this change brings a little much-needed consistency to it.

Uh, lots of people? You know, considering how AdBlock is still one of the most popular and widely used plugins of every web browser that has it.

That's what I don't get. I thought through the YEARS of AdBlock being highly popular that it was common knowledge that people...DON'T want little squares on their viewing space delivering advertisements while they're reading other, non-related things? I don't know how people can be offended that other people don't like ads, considering how there are plenty of ways to get rid of ads on other venues and nobody says anything about it.

Millions and millions of people use AdBlock every day. I bet the majority of the "GRR! YOU SHOULDN'T BE BOTHERED BY ADS ON XBOX LIVE, EVER!!" camp have AdBlock installed on their browsers too. And we're all blocking ads that show up in websites that are free to use, that rely on ad revenue to support their servers. Yet here's a service that's absolutely NOT free AND you still get ads. Is there any rhyme or reason? No.

I don't see how something that isn't beating you over the head can't possibly bother you. It's pretty clear Microsoft is selling its own paying customers as commodities to advertisers for the sake of extra bucks, cluttering up your space with things that have absolutely nothing to do with the console itself. That little square on the bottom right corner of your screen can be used for a wide variety of shortcuts, and yet it's wasted on ad space.

I don't think anybody wants to raise torches and pitchforks over this, but being peeved at ads for a service you already pay for is perfectly normal. Getting angry that people don't like unsolicited ads on a paid service is really quite silly.

If I remember correctly, before this update, quick launch had 2 tabs: recent, and latest downloads. Now, the relabeled quickplay has a third tab: "All." It lists all your games in a list alphabetically. I don't currently have any demos of non-arcade games on my hard drive, but if you hit Y, all your trial games disappear from the list. And since quickplay is available from the Guide, you don't even need to quit any game, video, etc. to check it out. Just FYI. :)

19:19 - Santa Chewie: am i really the only person

19:19 - Santa Chewie: wh odoesn't give a shit about ads being displayed in game?

19:20 - Dean [PXOD]: I think the people who are being expected to pay $60 a year might be a bit miffed they're getting ads shoveled down thier throat too

19:21 - Dean [PXOD]: and it's a reaonable complaint

19:21 - Dean [PXOD]: It would be a lot better if either XBL was free, everyone got ads. Or Gold was ad-free, XBL basic was ad-free but feature-free too. And XBL silver or something to have like ads to subsidise MP

19:22 - Santa Chewie: in the end, does it REALLLY bother you that much?

19:22 - Santa Chewie: i just don't see why people hate ads

19:23 - Santa Chewie: it's big business

19:23 - Dean [PXOD]: Ads subsidise a service

19:23 - Dean [PXOD]: google has ads

19:23 - Santa Chewie: the only REAL advertisement is that goddamn wow commercial in the corner

19:23 - Dean [PXOD]: google is free

19:23 - Dean [PXOD]: PXOD has ads, PXOD is free

19:23 - Dean [PXOD]: youtube has ads, youtube is free

19:23 - Dean [PXOD]: hulu has ads, hulu is free

19:23 - Santa Chewie: television has nothing but ads

19:23 - Dean [PXOD]: spotify has ads, spotify is free

19:23 - linklonk: Basic hulu

19:23 - Santa Chewie: and television isn't free

19:24 - Dean [PXOD]: Link if you pay for premium hulu do the adverts go away?

19:24 - Santa Chewie: television singlehandedly crafted the attention span of viewers because of ads

19:24 - linklonk: I think so

19:24 - Dean [PXOD]: (same as getting spotify pro = no adverts)

19:24 - Dean [PXOD]: Chewie

19:24 - Santa Chewie: i'm just saying

19:24 - Dean [PXOD]: http://www.bbc.co.uk/ - no ads. PAy upfront fee

19:24 - Santa Chewie: adblock

19:24 - Santa Chewie: block all ads

19:25 - Dean [PXOD]: http://www.xbox.com/en-GB/Live?xr=shellnav - up front fee. Loads of ads

19:25 - linklonk: Pretty shitty

19:26 - S.Tiger: What sort of ads on Live though?

19:26 - Dean [PXOD]: the system goes: you have adverts in orderto make somethign free. You pay in order to remove the adverts. It's how websites work, it's how web services work, it's how apps work (add adverts to a paid app n watch the review score plummet)

19:26 - Santa Chewie: in the corner

19:26 - Santa Chewie: the bottom right corner of every box

19:26 - Santa Chewie: a deaf chuck norris commercial for wow plays

19:27 - Santa Chewie: err a muted*

19:27 - Santa Chewie: i don't know why i said deaf

19:27 - Santa Chewie: anyway

19:27 - Santa Chewie: if you highlight that box

19:27 - Santa Chewie: it'll play the sound!

19:27 - Santa Chewie: if you don't, it won't!

19:27 - S.Tiger: Well, I can see the complaint there.

19:27 - S.Tiger: WoW's not on 360.

19:27 - Santa Chewie: The point is the square is fucking tiny

19:28 - Santa Chewie: it's not the focus of the page

We discussed it last night. He uses adblock too.

Edit: Making this statement not appear as a single sentence:

There's a difference between ads on the 360 and ads on the PC.

Ads on the PC:

Me: "Lemme scroll down"

PC Ad: "FUKNG EXPAND"

Me: "Shit, this ad is scrolling with me and lagging as I scroll up to hit the closing button."

Ads on the 360:

Me: "Turns on 360"

360 ad: "I'm confined to this tiny box and playing muted, if you want to hear me/have anything to do with me, then scroll to me! Other than that I'll just shit here and literally NOT GET IN YOUR WAY AT ALL BECAUSE I'M IN THE CORNER.

Still, though, AdBlock is far, far more detrimental to a website that relies on ads and nothing else as a means of revenue (and that's a TON of websites out there), but in exchange to selling basically "you" as a commodity to sponsors they provide you with a service for free.

It doesn't really matter if the ad isn't incredibly annoying with those retarded FUKNG EXPAND on Xbox Live, they're still using "you" as a commodity for them to make more money, for a service that you're already footing the bill for. I wouldn't mind at all if there was a "free" version of Live that would shove ads in your face, but if you're paying for it you shouldn't be seeing ads period.

I don't think anybody really wants to follow the footsteps of cable TV for anything. Lack of content, crazy price, 3 minutes' worth of ads every 8 minutes of show content (or less in some cases), the works. There was a time waaay back in the day when a big draw to cable TV was that it was completely ad-free since you were paying for it. Then there came in-channel ads that would advertise only shows from that same channel, then came a couple of regular ads, and then it grew and grew until we have this clusterfuck today. Give an inch, take a mile, etc. That little ad on the bottom right corner's gonna get bigger and bigger over the years if everybody just waves it away.

(Though I shouldn't even be getting worked up about this. I don't even use Live <_______<)

The ads have always been there, but in my opinion, they've gotten less intrusive in this last update.

In the original blades, they were small clickable banners in the marketplace tab if I recall correctly. I also seem to remember an option to disable them, turning them into blank, useless buttons. At one point, I think it stopped working; you could set ads to disabled, but they would appear anyway. At least, that's what I think happened to me (in recent times, I've learned I have a terrible memory :( ).

NXE made the ads bigger and added muted videos that played audio when highlighted and took up a selection spot that was often in the way, requiring one extra "right" or "left" input than otherwise required. The exception was if you knew what you wanted wasn't in your current "page," in which case you could skip to the next one with the bumpers. These ads were present in multiple channels: Spotlight, Games, Video, Music and maybe another one or two. There were usually two ads per channel. I also remember some people criticizing that when setting "boot to dashboard" while online, the console started on the spotlight channel instead of My Xbox channel, requiring an extra push of the thumbstick to go to the generally most visited channel. Some people specifically said they wanted it to start on the play disc button, but then wouldn't you rather just set "boot to disc?"

With this new update, the home tab condenses the spotlight channel to the "giant box" in the center and starts with the "disc tray/play game" button highlighted. The giant spotlight box is emulated in almost every tab, except optimized to show content relevant to that tab, e.g. new albums in music tab, new movie in video tab, etc. Ads are present in 2 places that I've seen so far (haven't really checked every nook): in the bottom right corner of almost every tab, including game marketplace tabs, and the rightmost panels of the first page in a Bing search. I have yet to see an ad in any of the giant boxes. There really is no reason to highlight any of the ads that I've seen. If you want to see what's to the right of any ad, the right bumper will send you to the next page. If you like manually scrolling though every item, you can still hit RB to skip the last panel with the ads.

I don't want to get into the argument of whether there should be ads in a paid service. Obviously, it'd be nicer if they weren't there. I just don't see why people picked now to make an even bigger deal out of it than last time. The ads are much less intrusive this time around. Sure, they take up space that could have been used to display more information, but they don't bother me in the least. In fact, I actually checked out the Chuck Norris WoW ad. I mean, it had Chuck Norris in it. How could I not? It was terrible, and I stopped watching it before it was even over, but watching it was a choice I made, not forced upon me so I could get to what I actually wanted. And that's more than I can say about watching live cable tv.

P.S.: Just did a quick check before hitting post, and there is a correction I'd like to make. The music tab's advertisement is not in the bottom right corner. It is actually closer to the left side. While it does make it a bit more intrusive, it's still clearly labeled as an ad and does not require any extra inputs to reach what you may desire.

My problem is that they chose to make new DLC/ads bigger than actual console functions.

The work-around is useless though. All it does is block the few ads from msn, it doesn't do anything about rearranging tiles so shit like "play game" is the bigger square.

I really don't see why they had to do one big square and 4 small ones. They could've easily made 2 of the squares big, then have three medium/small ones on top.

This is my problem with the update. My Xbox is a gaming machine first and foremost. The first thing I should see is the option to play a game.

The PS3 has a great way of doing this. You turn on the system and it goes to the "Whats new section" starting with games you recently played, and then slowly scrolls down to the ads. I understand that they want to show you what to spend money on so you can spend money in their shops, but the first thing I want to see is the function to play games.

Honestly if the little square was a moving ad, it probably would catch my attention more than the big one in the center which I always automatically ignore.

Maybe it has to do with that photography principle that the middle of a frame is not what the eye tends to focus on. We like to focus on corners and shit NOT right in the middle.

I like that at they very least the middle moving ad is shit that's IN the god damn console/marketplace. But still. I don't wanna say this but if it wasn't for me being a poor motherfucker and new consoles coming out in 2-3 years, I would have really considered getting myself a ps3 right now. All my friends are Sony fanboys so I never get to play with them.
