Faiblesse Des Sens
I think Watchmen is the only one you'd want in a physical format since that's the only one where you'd want to flip back and forth through a lot of the sections and there's stuff that explicitly works with the 2 page layout that would too obvious for a single page and then not at all fun to flip through it on the other pages. staySICK
 Marvel have announced some new storylines: Civil War Secret Wars Years of Future Past Age of UIltron vs Marvel Zombies  Well, I say new... This is so pathetic. CIvil War isn't even a decade old yet! I'm hoping I'm right in this, but I have the feeling that these aren't announcements of retelling the storylines, but rather something going on that ties with these past events. They all say summer 2015, and each time it's just been the image. Agent M on twitter has been alluding to something being not so straight forward with these as a simple revisit/retelling. P4: Gritty Reboot
Picked these up on a whim at the local comic shop. Both are enjoyable, though DKR is pretty heady and taking me far longer to get through than Winter Soldier, which was a one-night affair. I'm not a comic book geek at all but could see myself reading a decent story arc every couple months. Any more recommendations, folks? SomTervo
I goddamn hate East of West. I just came off a binge of some of the best westerns and sci-fi ever written and it's like the shittiest, wannabe little thing ever. Â The story itself has some nice ideas, it's just the telling and writing which is poor. That 'death' cowboy. Fuck, he's agonizingly bad. Â I started reading Crossed. Â Man that is some hard going. I love reading Ennis' work because it's so refreshing to see someone notgive a fuck about political correctness or reader-friendly violence - but I also stopped after two issues of the online one. Wish You Were Here, is it? Some of the scenes are... Gut-wrenching. Soul-wrenching even. I've never seen a zombie apocalypse done sexually. Faiblesse Des Sens
I really don't think of Death as a cowboy at all. I think framing the story within that is a HUGE mistake. It's basically a post-apocalyptic political drama with some other elements thrown in. I'm loving it so far. Â If you want more of a western feel that involves Death read Pretty Deadly. Â Crossed is pretty terrible. I like Ennis but that story is very weak.
SomTervo
Not a cowboy? He has the whole shebang except a Stetson! He's literally a badly written cookie cut of the Saint of Killers from Preacher. Â Â But yeah- it's the framing of the story which really fucked it for me. Like trying to achieve that... What was it, Marvel Illuminati thing? The flawed meta-story Marvel series. Whatever it was. The Templar-esque conspiracy theory tying together all these huge ideas from throughout human history. That worked because we were familiar with all the people and it was clear what the story was driving at. It was constantly referring to key mysteries and ideas and constantly referring back to one consistent thread. Â East of West is like... They're jumping between huge story arcs and giving them barely a few pages each. Little to no character development. No frequently recurring themes, phrases, mysteries, characters or plot points. (Save the apocalypse.) No setting development- at least, chopping among settings so much that each one becomes meaningless. You can't paint a whole sci-fantasy future planet earth without sticking in one place for more than half an issue. Â Â Still, I appreciate what they're trying to do with it. Â Yeah, Crossed is a phenomenal concept, but with essentially no plot to hang it on. His work is getting worse and worse over the years, kinda like Frank Miller. I finished Preacher last month and by fucking god that thing is a masterpiece. Â Edit: I heard some good things about Pretty Deadly. Who did it again? Will look it up, thanks for the pointer. Faiblesse Des Sens
Kelly Sue DeConnick. How much of East of West did you read? That shit makes like barely any sense until somewhere between issues 10 and 15 then it finally clicks. But really though, you put too much on his look, when his character isn't like that at all. SomTervo
I suppose I couldn't reconcile how he looked and his character? Maybe that's the problem. When he first pops up it's all like "ooooh here's a badass cowboy" then the more he talks the more that image is torn apart... In a bad way. Like he comes across as a lame teenage wannabe. Â But that's a good call, it might be a grower- I got the first volume in that Humble Bundle, so maybe I'll download the rest of it and see how it goes. Need a good new comic to get going on. Â Re Crossed - you heard about Alan Moore doing a new 100 years later story arc? Now that has potential. Moore's work has been a bit fringe recently, but that might just work with this. Â Did you read Neonomicon?

Mister Jack
I just finished reading Infinity Gauntlet. Â Man, that is one crazy-ass series. Â The upcoming film can't possibly hope to adapt the story as is, but it's just as well since I want to see a different take on the idea anyway. Â If the movie Thanos is even half as omnipotent as his comic counterpart, though, then the Avengers had better start making some extremely powerful allies (Doctor Strange) between now and 2019. Hot Heart
It's by Ryan North, creator of Dinosaur Comics, so it should be pretty funny. madbassman39
I'm not sure if this belongs in this thread or somewhere else. Â http://spinoff.comicbookresources.com/2015/01/05/vaughn-says-people-have-had-enough-of-nolans-superhero-style/ Â Essentially Matthew Vaughn, director of Kick-Ass, says that the dark gritty super hero movie is a thing of the past. Â I'm not sure I agree, I mean clearly Marvel has shown that we can have light hearted superhero romps, but I still think there is room for a gritty superhero movie. Not every movie needs to be like the Dark Knight Trilogy, but I welcome a good gritty superhero movie along side our Avengers movies.
Faiblesse Des Sens
Are we just talking movies here? If so I'm not really sure of the relevance. Movie trends come and go and there's so few movies compared to comics. Did I miss when there were a whole gigantic bunch of dark superhero movies? staySICK
I'm not seeing it either. Seems to me that the 'grimdark' movies are contained to DC/WB. or to distill it further, Snyder and Nolan. CorgiShinobi
Slightly getting back into comics, but I don't plan on going all-out. I've been told Spider-Gwen is a good new series that came out this past Wednesday (25th), and I do love me some Spider-Man alternate universes. Â Drove around all of town to find a copy and each one was sold out of their issues around noon. I grabbed one online, but each shop I ended up at would tell me it's going to be a big series. Honestly, I think it's as simple as people loving Gwen Stacey. (And because female webslingers are hawt)
CorgiShinobi
So I said I wouldn't go all-out, but I've definitely picked up a few more series beside Spider-Gwen. Â Spider-Gwen is in fact as good as they say and I can understand why there is such a demand for the next issue. I picked up Silk, another female webslinger, that's started out as well. It's more on the comical side of the Spider-Man persona, but it has potential. There was a Spider-Man special I picked up too, but nothing amazing so far. Finishing up Marvel I picked up Howard the Duck #1 which is an actual comedy series that does the job well. Good cameos as well. Â On the DC side of things I've only picked up Batgirl, the Arkham Knight prequel, and the latest issue of Deathstroke. Primarily I've found the female central characters to be more entertaining than any of their male counterparts. I wanted to get into more Batman/Gotham comics, but lately I've found some series just plain ol' have hideous art. Â Aside from all those, if you have to pick up a new series, Chrononauts is what I would recommend.
