Faiblesse Des Sens
The movie went over the top IMO and didn't have the same sort of emotional impact. Yes, it's Mark Millar, so there's not much there but I still enjoyed it more than the last 1/3rd of the movie.
Waldorf and Statler
I tried reading the comic and I'm sorry to say that I need to have at least one relatable/likable character as one of the main ones. Hit-girl was not enough to make up for the fact I couldn't stand the rest. They're all such douchebags. It's like American Horror Story. If everybody is a douchenozzle I can't enjoy it as much
Hot Heart
The film did a few things better, but the explanation/justification for Big Daddy was awful, and the romantic aspect was a bit too contrived (though not wholly unwelcome). It was too 'Hollywood-ised' in some regards.
Eleven
Finished reading Flashpoint (DC Event leading to the reboot) and IMO it's a good read. Screw old stories and timelines. It's a great starting point to get back in the DC world. Â However, I don't even understand how this is a "soft" reboot. I mean people don't know each other, as seen in JL #1. Also, during the end of Flashpoint, two people had a conversation and it seems like they know each other. How is that possible when on the reboot they shouldn't even know each other (I assume they wouldn't because Batman didn't even know Green Lantern)? Ugh... Â Also just read AvX Consequences #1. I just don't understand this bullshit they're trying to push on the reader. They keep trying to make this one guy (you would know who if you read my previous posts or if you read AvX) a criminal, but they keep failing miserably. The characters act out of, well, character. You won't believe what hypocritical bullshit comes out of Wolverine's mouth in the last page of this comic. Â I did like how Rogue acted on this comic. But then again, considering how she acted in the AvX, this still is out of character (or maybe she's now acting as she should, and she wasn't before. Making her character inconsistent in this event). Â I don't know if that's how Marvel planned this whole thing. But I'm starting to think they really intended for this shit to happen and then pull a 180 later. Â If not, well... good luck to them I guess. They just made Captain America and Wolverine the biggest douche bags in the Marvel universe. They really split their fans in half with that AvX mess. Â Sorry for the rant!
deanb
Been reading through "The Death of Superman" stuff. Been a while. It's a manual compilation too (I last read it as a properly compiled graphic novel) so spans quite a few comics, also this one I think is heading on to Reign of the Supermen too which I've never read before. Â City Library has a few shelves of Graphic Novels and Manga, any suggestions for what to look for? I've seen The Last Hero(Pratchett) which I might pick up when I leave (may as well actually rent something out). They've Volume 5 of Dark Empires which kinda sucks in fact I think they've only two Walking Deads as well. But not that I can complain, librarys tend to have somewhat sucky book collections (Their IT selection is terrible unless you want ot know how to use Office or OSX)
Mal
I've been getting the Adventure Time comics from a local store. The folks there are pretty cool so I have been thinking of branching out. I think I might get some Walking Dead but other than that, I'm drawing blanks. I can't say I'm too interested in Marvel or DC stuff but I can try.
Faiblesse Des Sens
If you go Walking Dead pick up the Compendium on Amazon or Barnes and Noble. It's a little bit of money for an absolute shitload of comics. The first Walking Dead can be read in of itself and be seen as one gigantic arc without having to worry too much about the rest of the series (which is still doing an ongoing arc of sorts.) Mal
While going to pickup my monthly Adventure Time stuff, I went ahead and picked up some of the smaller Walking Dead collections so I can bring them along with me without weighing me down too much. I started with volume 8 and 9 to pick off from where I left off. I left off after the Governor or whatever that sick fuck name is and while thing was looking bleak. Â I also picked up Revival and got Cyber Force for free. The dude there also recommended some other things but this is a good haul for now. Next month I think I'll get the other stuff. TCP
Picked up Hawkeye 1 - 3 on Friday. First time I've bought a comic book (except a few graphic novels) since 1998.. I think. I forgot how much ads are in them, that was disappointing. Other than that, it was fantastic, can't wait for the next issue. The art and writing is fantastic. Plus, Marvel has all these launches in the next few months, which sounds like a good time to get into Marvel again.
deanb
Akira. Â It's rather different from the film (or more the film is rather different from the manga). The films contains most of the major players (apart from Miyoki and Akira) and places, but many major events are omitted and the end and middle are mashed into one in the film. So yeah I'd strongly recommend the book. Makes Tetsuo not as much of a dick as he is in the film(still power hungry, but more vulnerable and a pawn), and expands upon the whole evolutiony/spiritual side of things too. Some of the different things make some of the biggest impacts. Â Â Â Also there's part of it where all I could think of was:
deanb
So been reading Walking Dead. Really sucks you in. Probably won't watch the show as I'm somewhat squeamish and with a comic I can dwell on the frames for as long and short as I want. I'd say my main issue is how quickly they can introduce and then kill off characters. Many of them don't get much of an expansion on their personality, and this includes some that have been tagging along since the start. Most of the expansion seems to be in who is hooking up with who, a lone character has no impact on the story if they're killed off for no one to care about them I guess. Â Also I say I won't watch the show, my mum does so I've seen snippets and from what I've seen TV show Rick is a dick, but comic book Rick isn't. Â Oh yeah I'm currently up to them not long being in woodbury.
Faiblesse Des Sens
That's an issue? I think it's one of its positives. That's how the world would really be if it happened. Unlike so much other media it doesn't force you to care about x or y before they get killed. Anyone can die at any time. Which makes it a lot less predictable than other comics. Kirkman does similar stuff with Invincible.
deanb
I understand that anyone can die at any minute, my main complaint is that outside of a very small core of characters(Which I'm to understand will soon get much smaller) they just don't expand upon them much, even the guys that have been around since early days. They're just there then they're not. Henshel looked like he was going to get a fair bit interesting, especially with his protection and theories of the roamers, then he changes his mind and becomes just another guy with a lot of dead family members. deanb
Marvel Zombies. Pretty good, though it's spread across a few other comics too so kinda hard to completely follow along with. Neat twist at the end, and a good overall play around with the zombie idea and messing with some of the "laws" of the marvel universe to interesting effect, which otherwise wouldn't be possible without a "what if" scenario. TCP
Just out of curiosity, has anyone gone completely digital? I was thinking of investing a tablet and avoiding my local comic store, which is sometimes a little unreliable for getting everything in.
Mal
Nah. I don't intent on doing that for the same reason I'm much rather have a hardcopy book. They do get reprints often enough that its not an issue. Besides, I think I can even just ask them to reserve a copy for me if I miss out. I do go into the store every Thursday where I at least leave with something.
Faiblesse Des Sens
I want to go digital because it seems so much easier and comics are quite the expensive hobby once you go into a shop and impulse buy something.
Mal
I got the first volume of a series called Saga a few weeks ago due to a reccomendation by the worker at the comic store. Its fantastic so far but I can't help but feel that the folks are going to die.
Faiblesse Des Sens
Brian K. Vaughn is awesome. I need to get that.
deanb
So my little 7yr old sister has an Android tablet (cheap chinese thing). Just wondering if any of you guys might know of any childrens comics, especially ones in a self enclosed series instead of long running ones like Beano and such. Â I'm especially struggling as I don't think "Girls of comic-con" and "Hit Girl" are quite appropriate.
Harri
So, I've been to midtown comics recently and picked up some marvel comics. I'll give my thoughts on them now. First up is The Superior Spider-man. It was surprisingly good, considering what happened in Amazing Spider-man 700 where Peter Parker and Doctor Octopus switched bodies, and Peter dies in Doctor Octopus' body. It's a breath of fresh air from the typical Spider-man story, and I'm interested where Dan Slott takes the new Spider-man next. Avengers Arena is the next comic I purchased. It's essentially Battle Royale/Hunger Games(take your pick) WITH SUPERPOWERED TEENAGERS. It's a bit rehashed(it even gets a mention by the main villain), but it does have a lot of character focused parts, so I'm on board with it. The fact that it has characters from the Runaways makes me a bit happier as well, even if they'll possibly die. The best for last. Hawkeye is my favorite comic coming out from Marvel currently. Matt Fraction is a great writer, with his work on Iron Man and Iron Fist being absolutely amazing. David Aja provides the art, and it's exceptional. It's has a much smaller scale than the Avengers, which Hawkeye is usually on, and it helps the storytelling and pacing. Definitely pick it up if you have the chance. deanb
http://marvel.com/comics/unlimited  This is pretty neat, seems a good deal too.
Eleven
DC should make something like that. I'm not much of a Marvel fan, only of the X-Men, but I like a lot of DC's heroes. Maybe because they're the ones i knew growing up, except for Spiderman and the X-Men. Â I did have a sub to marvel's unlimited before. It was in 2009 i think and I felt that a lot of the series I wanted to read weren't there yet. But i still get emails from it and they so seem to add a lot of comics every week. The problem is having to wait for the issues to get there knowing they were already out a year ago. But maybe I'm just impatient...
