From Pony's status update:

----------------------------------------------------

MagicMagicPony: finally got around to watching Iron Man 2... yuck

Deanb: Yeah, it spent too long on being The Avangers: The Trailer and not enough time on being awesome.

MagicMagicPony: and Mickey Rourke was DISGUSTING

Faiblesse Des Sens: I don't get it. Because it has maybe 5 minutes of Avengers content it's suddenly Avengers: The Trailer?

Deanb: SHIELD, The Shield, allusions to Thor, Black Widow (who's in for much more than 5 minutes), several Nick Fury cameos. Compared to a small clip at the end of the first one it's much more Avengers heavy.

Chewblaha: These are the only two good scenes from that movie: http://nik.bot.nu/view.fu?a=520736 and http://nik.bot.nu/view.fu?a=323542

MagicMagicPony: All i know is that after his birthday party I was hella bored.

Chewblaha: That's how I felt through the entire series. Then again I've never been one who was too fond of Iron Man. He's kind of like the...not as rich man's Batman.

Showmeyomoves!: Dean, Black Widow originally appeared in the Iron Man comics, so that's not necessarily an Avengers thing (even though she will be in the Avengers movie). I watched it again last night and I was just as underwhelmed as when I saw it the first time. ScarJo is hot, though! (See my status update).

Hot Heart: The first Iron Man was pretty underwhelming anyway.

Showmeyomoves!: Yeah, I suppose it was. I like that they went with a more lighthearted tone, but I'm just not sure Favreau is the right director for this franchise. (All this should be going in my Comic Book Geeks thread, btw!)

As Showmeyomoves! pointed out black widow was in iron man comics. The shield stuff and other things are so minor (they're called easter eggs and cameos for a reason) that they don't change the movie. But of course it's more than just a credit scene, that doesn't suddenly make it an avengers preview. What ridiculous hyperbole. It's less than 5 minutes of content.

Black Widow: Agent of SHIELD, working semi-undercover for Tony Stark to review his suitability for the avengers initiative. Certainly not in for just a short 5 minutes. Then there's the several Nick Fury cameos where he's brought in for semi-flimsy reasons. The agent dude pops up a couple of times, iirc Tony Starks dad is retconned in as a founder of SHIELD too.

As for the 'easter egg'? This is an easter egg:

The 'Oh hey pass me that shield over will you "oh hey you're not meant to have this shield" 'easter egg' in 2 would be akin to in Star Trek having Simon Pegg go "OH LOOK AN ASTROMECH DROID FLOATING ACROSS OUR WINDOW!"

As for it not changing the movie? Favreau hasn't exactly being quiet on how pissed he was with Marvel jamming in the Avengers stuff. He's having to balance the main story of Iron Man 2 while wedging in the Avengers stuff. For example the whole "eurgh I'm dying...oh hey SHIELD have a magical injection and a box full of stuff that'll let me make a brand new element with a machine resting on top of Capitan Americas shield" could of been ripped out without losing anything to the plot or character development. Black Widow too, since she never really provides any romantic competition for pepper potts (the two getting on quite well) and is pretty much just there for a scene where she n Favreau beat up some security guards.

All you needed was Tony Stark having a bit of a breakdown, getting drunk, fighting rhodes. Giving Pepper control of the company while becoming distanced with her. Then his heart to heart with his dads film reel. And all alongside this Sam Rockwell n Mickey Rourke getting chance to spread their legs some more since all the advertising has been removed from the plot. Then after the credits have some dudes find a hammer in a desert. Done.

To be fair, the Nick Fury stuff has no real place in the movie, besides fan service (and generating Avengers hype). It doesn't make sense to anyone who is 1) unfamiliar with the Marvel universe and 2) didn't catch the post-credits sequence of the first movie.

Another thing that bothered me about Iron Man 2 was the dialogue. I know they improvise most of that stuff, but it's too obvious that they do. They're constantly talking over each other and the dialogues don't flow very well. I'm not saying they should have the annoying "snappy" dialogues of the Gilmore Girls, but with so many great writers in their stable, surely someone at Marvel could write some nice banter.

Hmm... Now it sounds like I'm hating on the movie. I'll just end by saying: Both RDJ and Gwyneth Paltrow are perfect for their roles.

I really enjoyed Iron Man, but #2 just wasn't as good. There was a bit too much Avengers stuff, but the major problem I found was that the villains were just not as threatening in the second film and the film took too long to get to the action. The first started off strong with the Convoy scene, while IM2 didn't really get exciting until the Race scene. In terms of the villains, Justin Hammer was treated more as a comedy character, and then I find that Anton Vanko becomes less threatening as he has to be saved by Hammer. In the first film, each villain was built up to be more and more threatening.

First, discussing comics in Poony's status. Now, I'm going to discuss sitcoms in the comic thread.

The above is what bothers me about Curb Your Enthusiasm. It has some great situations and Larry David is obviously very astute with his observation, but the improvisation just ruins it for me. Too often they just fall back on yelling at each other.

Of course, this is said by someone who has only caught 5-6 episodes and is a big Seinfeld fan.

And onto Iron Man, I thought RDJr. was good but the actual Iron Man stuff and action was very tame (probably budget reasons). Didn't help that the villain stuff was boredomtown.

I can't find a photo of it. The 'new element' or whatever. Shiny glowing triangle.

Oh, you mean the arc reactor (that thing in his chest)?

Also, I forgot to say that, like Smooves, I'm not sure Favreau is right for the Iron Man films either. Cowboys & Aliens looks interesting though.

What is Cowboys & Aliens? Please find me a suitable trailer.

Film starring Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford and Olivia Wilde. About gunslingers fighting off aliens. Says it all really.

EDIT: Dean put a better quality one here

Can't believe it took this long for someone to make a movie like that. Is it based on a comic or something?

I always thought it would be an interesting idea to have an MMO where all the different factions would be: Ninja, Pirate, Cowboy, Alien, Robot and Zombie. (Eh, yeah, kind of like the dead story thread...)

@Dean: I was just about to check that out, actually.

Cool, they actually start out with Gwen Stacy in this one.

I hope she dies.

What they should reboot is Fantastic 4. I don't even care about them, but I do care about Dr. Doom, and we need an onscreen Doom who isn't a complete wiener.

I remember there was talk of rebooting FF, but it seems to have be forgotten about or put aside so that they can rush out the Spider-Man reboot (I'm fairly sure the both are licensed by the same company).

Yeah, they're doing a Fantastic Four reboot. Haven't heard anything about the casting, though. I guess they want to focus on promoting the new Spider-Man first. I'm also pretty sure both are done by Columbia.

I've said this before, but I really hope the Fantastic Four reboot doesn't hold back on the crazy science-fantasy from the comics. The first two movies' biggest mistake (apart from casting Jessica Alba) was trying to ground it in any kind of reality. Once they did that, anything that's actually true to the comics just seemed silly. How are you ever going to successfully portray a gigantic planet-eating dude with a purple helmet if you don't set the tone for that kind of thing right from the start? Stupid giant cloud thing...
