FMW
I reckon it's time to make a thread for this game, because it's finally gotten the Square-Enix 8 minute trailer treatment. First, let's take a glance at the video. It's still the Japanese version, but I don't imagine the text would clear anything up even if it was understandable: Okay, what do we take away from this? I see: The full cast of The World Ends With You looks to have made it into this game. That's good! Especially Rhyme. There appear to be multiple Soras and Rikus running around now. That's bad. There's new Disney worlds! (Hunchback of Notre Dam, 3 musketeers, Tron Legacy) That's good. In a move that surprises absolutely nobody yet is still disappointing, it looks like a bunch of "dead" characters are coming back. A good chunk of the organization shows up in this trailer (if I'm right, I think only the folks who got killed off in Chain of Memories). This is bad. We've got some big characters bouncing around in this trailer, which suggests to me that the main story will actually move forward in this game. That's good. Looks like there are touch screen controls for certain special moves. That's... interesting. Not a direction I imagined they would go with here. I'm gonna call this bad because that's gonna kill the 3D effect like no other. Traverse Town is back. It wasn't in KH 2 and I like the music there. That's good. It looks like "diving" is the replacement for the Gummy ship this time around. Judgement will be withheld for now, but I haven't liked the transport minigames before so I have low expectations for this. Probably bad. End summary: It looks like a continuation of Kingdom Hearts. More convoluted, more recycled music, and more Disney tie ins. Nothing here looks like it would turn away KH fans, and nothing here that looks like it would make new converts. I now invite those "in the know" to make storyline predictions. Go crazy, because you know whatever you come up with will be less crazy than the real thing anyway. Strangelove
They need to STOP reusing assets. Seriously. Fucking stop it. KH1 and KH2 had a good thing going. All new worlds, new theme song, new characters, new gameplay...then bam! Those 2 game's assets have been so raped by other KH games....its sad. Thank God for BBS. This one looks to be recycled though for the most part.
FMW
@Strangelove I challenge your statements about KH 2. KH 2 didn't have all new Disney worlds, many enemy types were recycled, and the combat was very similar to KH 1 with the exception of the addition of a "quick time event" button on Triangle. The leveling up system in KH 2 was the exact same AP based system as KH 1, which is really disappointing when you compare that to the interesting things Chain and Days did in this area. What assets do you see in this trailer that you recognize? Are you talking about level designs? Enemy types? Music?
Strangelove
Well, I had written a long rant here, but my pc fucked up. But basically besides the hunchback, TWEWTY cast, and Riku's new haircut, everything in this trailer is reused from previous titles. All the characters, levels, animations, everything is reused. They also need to seriously once and for all kill off Ansem(KH1) an Roxas. It seems all new KH games seem to do is make previous game's stories pointless. Also, fuck 358/2. That game was awful. Worst KH game by far.
CorgiShinobi
Also, fuck 358/2. That game was awful. Worst KH game by far. I was under the impression that Re: coded was the worst of the bunch, then 358/2.
TCP
I don't know... looks like this series has run it's course. They should just re-title this game "Kingdom Heats 3" and be done with it, then they can move on to what Square Enix does best (metal chocobo songs!). Faiblesse Des Sens
As someone who was really into KH1 and 2 and all of the lore and story I have to say... WHAT THE FUCK DID I JUST WATCH!?
CorgiShinobi
Guesstimation: 92% of this game will be a recap of everything which will lead to Kingdom Hearts 3. The rest of the percentage will be split between minigames and actual plot progression. I say this as the near ending is just that, a recap of everything in Kingdom Hearts. The whole point of this game looks like dreams (oh but not memories) which might give Sora and Riku insight to what they must face in KH3. Faiblesse Des Sens
Haven't the past like 141941819 games been about setting up the next game?
Strangelove
I like how they use every crazy ploy possible to reuse the same shit over and over again. They use memories, time travel, digital code of yourself, a guy thats pretty much an alternate you(a part of your heart? Riiiiiiiiiiiiiight...). Those Japanese guys sure are crafty. I wonder what theyll do next.
CorgiShinobi
Haven't the past like 141941819 games been about setting up the next game? Chain of Memories is really the only one that ever felt like a X.5 title (in its case, Kingdom Hearts 1.5). 358/2 was moreso a spin-off that revealed an "unknown" member of the organization, but seemed to result in only explaining why Roxas had two Keyblades. Oh, and a certain chamber, but that was a single cutscene. Birth by Sleep is a prequel, just more so giving insight to previous locals and characters. By far it is the only one of the handheld games to provide a lot of meaningful information regarding the overarching plot. Coded/Re:coded had two minutes of plot progression. No, really, the very ending and you get a hint of what Sora and Riku will have to do in KH3. Edited December 20, 2011 by Atomsk88
Mister Jack
I get the feeling that they already know full well what they're gonna do in KH3. But they gotta keep the series alive so they gotta churn out all this crap because they want to save the good stuff for the "real" sequel on the ps3. So they need to finish god damn FInal Fantasy Versus XIII so they can get to work on it because I DON'T CARE ABOUT THESE SPIN OFFS. Actually, Birth by Sleep is awesome, but that was IT. FMW
Yep! We've had digital recreation copies, extraction of memory copies, and now we have new evil twin copies. What do you guys think they are? Clones? They haven't done clones yet. Ooooh, or what about time travel? Wait, this is set in some sort of dream world, right? I'll betcha it's nightmare Sora and Riku. Personally I'm holding out for parallel dimension/universe Then we could have alternate versions of ALL the characters, their nobodies, their memories, and their digital recreations. If you take this franchise lore seriously you're doing it wrong. Edited December 20, 2011 by Frosted Mini-Wheats
CorgiShinobi
Wait, Frosty, have you played Birth by Sleep? Just sayin', those evil twins aren't new... or evil twins! And Jack, Chain of Memories was pretty good. All the DS titles, yeah, you can throw those out. I could only tolerate 358/2 because I like Organization XIII... actually, it's probably because I liked "The Organization" from Chain of Memories. Mister Jack
I guess Chain of Memories can kind of get a pass because about half of the game is new and it had an interesting battle system, but it still reused too much stuff. FMW
@Atom - no, BbS is the only Kingdom Hearts game I don't have the means to play @Mister Jack - I played Chain of Memories on the GBA cartridge and had no problems whatsoever with recycled elements Lol, and at the end of this game they'll end it with Xion waking up and the game says "and it was all a dream"
「Advent Chaos」
Anyone else got this besides me? I was lucky enough to pre-order the mark of mastery edition even though most stores stopped taking preorders. Still in traverse town getting a hang of everything, but I'm having a lot of fun! Also holy hell they're actually explaining terms and background? IS THIS REALLY A KINGDOM HEARTS GAME? GOSH
excel_excel
I was thinking about getting it but I've only played Kingdom Hearts and Chain of Memories and well....I didn't come close to finishing them. I was holding out for a HD collection announcement for the previous titles, but 3D seems really polished and full of content so........maybe......maybe..... Mister Jack
I got it. It plays pretty well but I hate how the shape of the 3DS and the design of its buttons forces me to curl my hands into painful claws to control the camera.
CorgiShinobi
I'll eventually get it. When I began buying back N64 games for a "new" collection, I knew I wouldn't be buying any new retail game soon. I even spent my $10 credit for Amazon on the Adventure Time Season One Collection, which was going to go toward this game.
「Advent Chaos」
3 Hours in and just beat the first world. The boss took me a few tries, but y'know how it goes, figure out the pattern and play your Cure spells smart. Oh yeah I'm also playing on Proud Mode and have "ZERO EXP" enable. YEAH  Oh also, there was a preeeety big spoiler for "The World Ends With You" and also deepens some mysteries. It's crazy. As I mentioned before, KH3D is doing a surprising job at explaining many things. Most of them may be in text form, but reading them certainly helps. For example, did you know that Ansem (KH1) and Xemnas (KH2) actually SUCCEEDED in creating a "Kingdom Hearts"? (First one manifested as that giant door that led to the realm of Darkness. The second was supposed to return what "nobodies" are missing.) I always thought they were close to being complete or just failures. There was another entry on Keyblades which was pretty interesting! Faiblesse Des Sens
I never beat TWEWY. I got to the third character (who itself is a spoiler iirc.) Does it spoil anything after that?
「Advent Chaos」
Honestly yeah it does. Although considering you never finished it, you might just end up being confused and not care.
CorgiShinobi
The Kingdom Hearts thing isn't that surprising... I mean, it has been a while since the first and II came out, but those were part of the ending/finale. If you didn't play Birth by Sleep, definitely pay attention to Keyblade material. That game alone expanded on the Keyblade War and the intended purpose for all the conflict, aside from Kingdom Hearts.
「Advent Chaos」
Oh no, I remember when they explained why the keyblade wars happened, but most details felt like they were scattered or just kind of cryptic (Or I'm just dumb). I was just taken aback to see fine explanations right away on the beginning of the game. That said I always wondered. (Master) Xehanort was successful in creating a χ-blade mostly by himself, you would think that if all the keyblade warriors that participated in the war made a pact they could have probably created more than one χ-blade. I also wonder what the worlds would be like if the war never happened.
