Hot Heart
With the year coming to a close, I've been looking back and realising how great some of the music has been. So, this is where we get to share some of the aural delights we have stuffed our ears full of this year. Batman: Arkham City - Main Theme Like with the first game, you can hear shades of Zimmer's score for Nolan's Batman films. Batman: Arkham City - This Court Is Now In Session http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Heu7eE6c8GM Perfect music to accompany fisticuffs. Especially if it matches with your chin piston getting right up some ruffian's bracket, I do say. Bastion - Setting Sail, Coming Home A beautiful yet haunting blend of two earlier themes that contrast with (or compliment) one another Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood - City of Rome I'm counting this because the PC version came out this year. Shush! I've got some more, but I don't want to hog the thread.
excel_excel
Gonna throw up Xenoblade music. So fantastic. The main menu theme is.....just wow. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nNR-wsFAfiU&feature=related and this is the music for the first big area you can explore....just awesome. Its got the PERFECT feeling for that kind of area. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WYkmn347wsY&feature=related and ending with a battle theme, this is one of those that plays when a monster attacks your party before you've engaged them for battle. Just give it till about 0.23......oh god damn that guitar riff, then it just goes totally epic. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V4vCEHpv6Hg&feature=related Edited December 20, 2011 by excel_excel
Hot Heart
That sounds pretty cool. I don't really play JRPGs anymore but I always love that over-the-top (in a good way) sort of music. I'll add another because I can't help myself. So beautiful and peaceful.

MetalCaveman
Dark Souls has an awesome soundtrack. Same goes for Dead Space 2 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VtO8Nq95gjY
Saturnine Tenshi
Above all else, this: God Eater Burst: God and Man ~Vocal Ver.~ I've beaten this horse with such vigor and so often that it'd seem very much alive(though seizing) to anyone watching. God and Man is, by far, the most powerful video game song I've heard in a long time. Abso-friggin'-lutely stirring. Even above the NieR masterpiece. Shame the game isn't so great. God Eater Burst: Over the Clouds -BURST mix- Extended http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1zJ44kpboow Honestly, the entirety of the Ar tonelico Qoga: Knell of Ar Ciel soundtrack is spellbinding. I'm certain I said as much in my GOTY nomination article. A few of my favorites: Ar tonelico Qoga: Knell of Ar Ciel: Within the Light Ar tonelico Qoga: Knell of Ar Ciel: EXEC_COSMOFLIPS/. Ar tonelico Qoga: Knell of Ar Ciel: EXEC_REBIRTHIA=PROTOCOL/. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kfgW1Iyc62c I'd do more with this post, but I'm exercising at the moment. I'll be certain to return to this thread tonight or tomorrow for some intense sharing/listening.
toxicitizen
Could probably come up with a few more if I tried, but this is all I got off the top of my head. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZiN6t7K7txw

toxicitizen
Alright, here's one more. What's that? Mass Effect 2 didn't come out this year, you say? Well, the PS3 version did! Also, this is the (superior, imo) London Philharmonic Orchestra's rendition of the piece from their Greatest Video Game Music album, which came out less than 2 months ago. So there. edit: oh what the hell, the album did come out this year and it's too awesome to be ignored. Usually not a fan of Halo, but this is just fucking epic. Saturnine Tenshi
@HH: The din of praise for Bastion's soundtrack makes it seem the best thing since fellatio. I disagree. However, Setting Sail, Coming Home and its married tracks are damn swoon-worthy. Totally agree with that particular beast making your post. @excel: I'd like to know the extent of Mitsuda's influence on that soundtrack. He's seated among my most beloved video game composers. The tracks sound decidedly... errant. I realize he wasn't the only guy/gal to grace the game. Not that I think the tracks are bad at all. They just don't really strike me as Mitsuda, which is now an adjective, a state of musical being. @Atomsk88: You're working hard to awaken the dormant Zelda fan in me. AWAY WITH YOU, CURSED CREATURE! @FLD: That... actually wasn't bad. I'm not a fan of Mass Effect, but the track hearkens to road trips when my only CD was the Smashing... Live! orchestration. I've been leaning toward voiced tracks recently, even if my video game roots entangle games that were lucky to have a voiced opening or ending thrown in. Dunno why. I hope it hasn't fleeced my ears to instrumental tracks of equal calibre caliber. Still, I'll gather some instrumentals for this post. I've recently went about listening to the entire ATQ soundtrack and the subsequent pain of plucking two links to illustrate what it offers... so this is a relief. >_< Ar tonelico Qoga: Knell of Ar Ciel - Rainbow-Colored Crayon http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p3Z9ZwEWonk Ar tonelico Qoga: Knell of Ar Ciel - Sneak Through the Grand Gate http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r2LfHKlciug Ar tonelico Qoga: Knell of Ar Ciel - Signpost of Memories ~ The First http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7MPmkkFjq78&feature=related Ar tonelico Qoga: Knell of Ar Ciel - Spinning the Thread of Hope http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hSvXgNNkD0c This post was initially intended to cover more than ATQ—to introduce some new games. Then I loaded the soundtrack. There are some neat chiptune remixes at the end that I'd like to include. LOOKS LIKE ANOTHER POST IN IS ORDER! Later...

P4: Gritty Reboot
The best part about Portal 2's soundtrack is how dynamic it was, with faster and louder beats pumping as you launched toward the solution of the puzzle. WTF
Music from games this year that were enjoyable. Some of my preferred tracks were chosen like the deus ex one, so instead of repeating several tracks from a few games mentioned I'm going to try and put one track from each game that I liked for its music and in the order they were released: LBP2 had a lot of decent music but it's not really fair since a lot of it was licensed music so the best original track from it is definitely --> Marvel Vs Capcom. It feels good to win oh yeah. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vf1Nj_73uIg I've left the intro of LA Noire many a day while doing stuff (before I got the OST) simply because I like themes like that. It's the perfect music for a rainy night Though the song existed as a non-instrumental version for nearly two years prior to Infamous 2 the commercial and the instrumental was a pretty good mix http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eqj1N_GjE5o This song from SoTD felt like a Throwback to my high school years when I listened to Pantera and the Crow OST (It's always the riffs)
WTF
One of the better downloadable games of the year. This track is just a throwback to platformers like PoP (the game is more like ikaruga+metroid+castlevania in case people haven't really played it) Friday Night Chillout Music is what Catherine's mostly suited for. I really enjoyed this track for that reason: Catherine - Also Sprach Brooks http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j-xAURVtuJE&feature=related Xenoblade's been covered but I prefer colony 9's night music http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XLuHvi_WvZ8 I really like this music because it makes me feel so much at ease. I love the arrangement. El Shaddai Also revelation from the same game shows that he hasn't lost his DMCness
WTF
Music from the severely overlooked title rocketbirds The problem with most of Sonic Generations is that it's awesome listening to it while playing but outside of it it's a bit cheesy just like Tekken and MvC and stuff . But lets see since the thing has so many tracks the one I liked was Good Heist Music from Saints Row the Third This is really like a more modern Ocean's 11 track. Minus the chipmunkiness (which goes well in the level) the music is actually pretty good. Has almost a Disney-esque feel to it. Well technically Tekken Tag Tournament doesn't hit this year but we had the prologue (this track's not in it). The music is pretty good to get you into the mood to play a 'fighting' game http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tPymEwwrDLI
WTF
So that's 15 tracks in total XD from games this year without including a lot of titles that i missed out on such as Ghost Trick (a few were good), Persona 2 PSP, Tactics Ogre, Kirby's Epic yarn (since his pants tale was out in the US last year but only here this year) and not worth it to repeat GoW, MGS, Ico&SoTC or the remixes from MK (though some were good )
jayc4life
This year was a pretty awesome for game music, but my 2 favourites would have to be "Triumph" from Frozen Synapse http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dnlQvdvIiZo And "The Sole Regret" from Bastion. Hard to pick one song out of both those games, but those 2 had the best soundtracks this year for me, personally.
