Games You've Beat in 2012

Lord of the Rings War in the North.

Kinda bummed that essentially you beat the main guy because

you happen to fight him around same time a wee hobbit is tossing a ring in a pit of fire.

. Though that's only the narrative, you still have to beat him (twice). I quite liked it, though I think it could have done with polishing in a few areas. Nice to have an Eagle along too, not really touched on much in other media (hoping for more in Hobbit).

I'd say its main downfall is the two AIs that I think were designed with "these should really be played by people" in mind, so playing them in SP wasn't really worked on much. They don't really follow out the objectives when they crop up (like "defend the door"), just going in common "follow main character, slash up bad guys". And it's a pain to handle inventory with them because you can only throw items you pick up their way and hope it's better than what they have now. Which does mean for all I know most of the game they spent in low level gear (you can't control their levelling either). Oh and if they both die you're fucked. The revive feature can be blocked if you're attacked. And that means normally running to one side of the level, then running back and hoping the enemeis don't catch up with you as you're holding down :PSX:. I'd have hoped for many a revive skill/spell and/or item to appear at some point (There's a self-revive potion, and I only had one in the whole game).

I've been mostly replaying "older" games on PC lately. I think I made a post about Arkham Asylum and I've also replayed the original Assassin's Creed (planning on replaying up to Brotherhood before ACIII comes out) and Darksiders.

Also, I didn't feel like starting something too long after Darksiders since Darksiders II comes out next week, so yesterday I played through Breath of Death VII: The Beginning. It's a fun retro-style RPG, not much more to say. It's pretty short (about 5 hours) but it's dirt cheap and I don't think the idea could support a full-length RPG anyway so that didn't bother me too much.

I've been having trouble deciding what to play all weekend for this exact reason. Tried Touch My Katamari but got stuck on a level, eventually settled on Tropico 4 since even though the games take a while since it's not really a traditional "campaign" I don't feel guilty if I stop playing it when Darksiders 2 comes out.

Yeah, I've been aching to start ACII but there's no way I'd be able to finish it by tuesday so I've been looking for less time consuming stuff. I was thinking of either trying to get back into L4D2 or maybe giving Blacklight: Retribution a shot. But now I think Hero Academy is going to keep me busy for a while. Had it less than 24 hours and already got 9 hours logged according to Steam. Damn thing kept me up all night. O_O

A chunk of that is just having it running in the background while you do other stuff until your next round of turns, but once you got a few games going there isn't much downtime.

Alan Wake's American Nightmare

I had been neglecting it for a long time what with other games coming out, but finally got around to finishing it today. It was... okay. I mean, the combat was worlds better than the first, but what keeps me playing in a Remedy game shouldn't be the combat, I think. It probably would've been better if they only reused the same areas 2 times rather than 3, but really, for a $10 game I'm not complaining. Not even close.

I loved Stacking. What took you 3 weeks? The only real let down was that the puzzles didn't get complex enough. It was only right at the end that they introduced mixing abilities.

Also, one of my most memorable / loved things from Stacking: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tLQ-6_OIds4

It took me 3 weeks because I just had more interesting things to play. Most of the game boils down to walking around looking for the right doll so I would get bored after an hour or so and wouldn't touch it again for a week.

It's not bad but some variety would've helped. It did get a bit more interesting near the end, though. It could've used some more of that. It kinda feels like they got those ideas too late in development to implement them everywhere.

I've noticed with several puzzle games I've played recently that the puzzles never really get complicated enough, even at the end of the game.

I tried playing Quantum Conundrum's Desmond Debacle DLC this weekend and couldn't do it. The puzzles weren't hard to figure out, but they were a complete pain in the ass to execute, so I'd spend 20 minutes on each one knowing what to do the entire time but having to try over and over and over again and that is not why I play puzzle games.

I agree, the challenge in puzzles should be in working out how to do it. Executing it should be cake. I've been playing Broken Sword on my Android. That game actually made you think. Translating substitution cyphers and stuff like that. Ohhh, nostalgia.

Sleeping Dogs.

Great game. Kind of easy though but I don't think difficulty was the point for this game so there are no BS hard missions like the RC plane in Vice City or "Follow the train" in San Andreas. You pretty much only die by the lack of focus since you can die really fast but you can also get out of any melee fight without a scratch. Gunfights might be a bit harder and you WILL die very quickly if you don't keep your head down.

All in all, this game is all about being in the action and being a Triad which they did pretty damn well. I felt that I was in one of those Hong Kong flicks which is great since I grew up on those kind of films and now being able to play in one.

Length wise, it can be short. I beat it in 24 hours with most stuff done. So if you're the kind of person who judge a game by how long it takes to beat the game.. hold till a sale or get it on Green Man Gaming. You can get it for 30% with the 20% voucher. I bit on Amazon when its was $45 and even then I think it was worth the money.

Now to screw around...

I liked it a lot. There was a part right at the beginning of the second realm where I thought it kinda dragged, and it seemed like the main quest just had you doing busywork. That made me nervous, but after that one part it cleared back up and overall I thought it was very well done.

*Edit* - Ending was kind of anticlimactic though.

Ending was kind of anticlimactic though.

Just completed it as well and... that's one way to put it <_<

I thought the game was absolutely fantastic, for the most part. Right up there with Assassin's Creed II and Arkham City and any other sequels that improved upon the original in every conceivable way. The game is massive, the quest feels epic, combat feels great, the dungeons are smaller but there's a metric fuckton of them, decent amount of side-quests and optional bosses, etc..

Most of my issues (and minor ones at that) were about the story. Right up until the final boss, that is. After beating it a few minutes ago, the ending really left a bad taste in my mouth. And considering that THQ's future is looking pretty grim right now and that there's a chance we won't be getting a third one, that kinda pisses me off.

Mostly, I disliked how disconnected it feels to the original and I'm kind of annoyed that they basically just re-used the original's cliffhanger. I mean, I loved that cliffhanger. It made you go "Oh shit!" and you were excited to see what happened next. I was hoping the game would eventually catch up and pick up from where the first one left off.

So yeah, I was kind of underwhelmed when all we got was a shitty boss fight (almost no build up to it and some of the optional bosses were actually more challenging), a 30 seconds cutscene and the same fucking ending as the original. Also, I was really surprised they didn't actually make you choose between bringing back humanity or the Nephilim. To build that up for half the game and then just take the decision out of the player's hands entirely was just weird.

I could go on but I'd just be ranting and I don't really want to do that because I actually really enjoyed the game. I'm just really disappointed by where they went with the story and how incomplete and abrupt the ending felt.

On a more positive note, I finally got x360ce to work with my shitty gamepad! :D Thank god for that because m+kb controls were kinda janky. Reaper form wouldn't activate, for example.

Also, not related to the game, but I think I might have actually fixed an issue that's been plaguing me for almost 2 years now! That should make my PC gaming significantly less frustrating.
