Dropbox

An excellent tool for many purposes, especially sharing pictures and such on here, is Dropbox.

It has a free service which you start with 2GB of space which can be upgrade through various means to 8GB. There's a paid for 50GB package too.

It allows you to have a special folder on your PC which automatically syncs any file in it upto the web, a website you can access via any PC, and smartphone apps.

There's several folks with it here already, and to get extra space we have referral links. Signing up with these means you start with 2.25GB and the other user gets a space boost too.

This here is my link though I'm near my limit of 8GB so I'd suggest using others first.

(to find your referral link click the 'Get extra space free' link with the present on it)

Just a note:

There are by default two folders, one called Public, one called Photos.

The names are a bit shitty. Photos should be called 'Gallery' as you make folders with an album of images inside, and you share the whole album.

Public is where you can put individual images to share and hotlink on here.

You can also make your own private folders for important documents you want a back up of, school work etc. All very useful.

Oh another word of caution. Dropbox has no image size restrictions. So it won't warn you if you go and drop in a fancy 10meg image you just took to share in the 'what I look like thread'. Which means anyone loading it up will get your 5MB image to load too. So just a bit of common courtesy and pre-shrink images if they're intended to be posted up on here :D

I think you can get little tools that'll automatically resize any image that you post. Check lifehacker (Logged out of course :P)

I've been thinking about giving Dropbox a go, as I've heard a lot about it, but I don't have a smartphone, so can't use it to it's full potential.

Free is free though, so... *goes to sign up*

Well just because you can't use every element of it shouldn't turn you off.

It's smartphone use is somewhat limited as your phone can only open so many filetypes.

Oh yeah there's also a nifty feature of having a shared folder, so you can hook up with other Dropbox users and drop files n such and it'll be instantly synced with everyone else collaborating. That's mostly something I've being thinking of for PXOD folks. I can't see too much use of that feature except people working together.

Dropbox saved me essentially this school year. I placed my school folders in my dropbox so I could access all my work at home or school or wherever I was. It is an essential tool in making sure you always have the most up-to-date version of a given file when you're ready to work on it.

As a side, my home PC went down about three weeks ago, two weeks before finals. It's still down, it's got either a wounded processor, memory, board or combo of all three. Without dropbox I would have had to drop everything and fix my PC just to get up and running in my classes. Instead, I just connected with my laptop and never missed a beat.
