Mister Jack
There's a thread like this in the old country, but most of us are migrating over here so I thought I'd make it again for the people who aren't originally from there or haven't seen it. What are your favorite Christmas specials? Are there any that you watch every year?
TheForgetfulBrain
My family would often watch this bootleg we taped off of the TV when I was like five called 'The Box of Delights,' this BBC production of a children's book (Christmas based). We only had the first half taped though, so until they released the DVD a few years ago, I had never seen the whole thing. It's fun, even if the special effects are ridiculous now. deanb
Well there's always the Wallace and Gromit. Despite it being on almost every year I've still not seen The Great Escape (I assume there's something in it Xmas related for it to be a 'Xmas movie') Home Alone's never lost it's charm. Doctor Who is a big one for me in recent years. Most of the 'specials' around here tend to be on New Years. Got the Big Fat Quiz of the Year, Jools Holland, and the countdown as well. But yeah Xmas is mostly movies, Doctor Who and the Queens speech, which we tend to pass over.
Mister Jack
Wallace and Gromit has a Christmas thing?
deanb
Well not a special. They just tend to run them around about now. Harry Potter films seem to be becoming a Christmas thing too.
King Jimmeh
Wallace and Gromit always gets shown on TV around Xmas time in the UK. Personally, I can't say I have any Christmas programs I go out of my way to watch. Saw Kiki's Delivery Service on TV on Christmas Day a few years back, so I tend to re-watch it around Xmas Day time just cos I enjoy it so much. Mister Jack
A Christmas Story is mandatory viewing for everybody. FUCK ME I just realized I don't own the dvd version and I no longer have a VCR. Edited December 15, 2010 by Deanb double post
AcidCrownie
It's a Wonderful Life, Elf, and Merry Christmas, Charlie Brown are staples. Ps: You'll shoot your eye out, kid!
Mister Jack
I thought I would hate Elf but I surprisingly did not. That climax with Santa scene is so cornball, though. Even for Christmas.
Chronixal
Oddly enough, the Wallace and Gromit shown at Xmas is almost always The Wrong Trousers, which always amazes me because that penguin is the scariest thing I ever saw as a child. Damn thing freaks me out even now. Anyway, you can't have Xmas without The Snowman, Muppets Xmas Carol and The Royale Family.
Mister Jack
Why does Netflix act like Muppet Christmas Carol doesn't exist?
Chronixal
That's almost as outrageous as the claim made by my mother that she hates the Muppets. Bitch got no class.
Mister Jack
I mentioned Emmett Otter back in old country but this is a fanmade trailer for anyone who never saw it.What the video is doing is saying that there were two versions of Emmett that, for some reason, had slightly different footage in certain places, and that they've just put them both together into one longer edition.Edit: I know I'm dwelling on the Muppets a lot. Last one, I promise. This is one of the best Christmas specials of all time. I don't think it's ever on tv anymore though...That new one where they're trying to get Santa's mail or some shit was so bad that I wanted to kill myself. Little Pirate
A Christmas Story always held a special place in my heart. A few years back, my uncle used to rant about how much he hated that movie because they played it ALL day EVERY year. He pretty much got sick of watching it. So the next year, I bought him the special edition DVD. 'OH fudge you!' ONLY HE DIDN'T SAY FUDGE.
StrifeROKs
What kind of fudge?

Little Pirate
As far as older movies go, the two Christmas specials that I grew up with: How the Grinch Stole Christmas Merry Christmas Charlie Brown. My dad always read Dr. Seuss to me when I was little and my mom was an avid Charlie Brown fan so those two are considerably important in my Christmas spirit. Mister Jack
Which Charlie Brown one was that? There's so damn many.
Little Pirate
The original, old one.
Battra92
I don't think it's ever on tv anymore though...That new one where they're trying to get Santa's mail or some shit was so bad that I wanted to kill myself. It was released on VHS where they cut out all the singing bits. I guess they didn't want to pay the royalties on Sleigh Ride and Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas or something. No matter. As stated elsewhere I have my own copy.

Battra92
It's not a Christmas special per se but it is one that is forever etched in my mind and will also be.
