deanb
No thread on this yet? Anyway there's an expansion coming: http://www.2kgames.com/blog/civilization-v-expansion-pack-announced "Gods & Kings". Somewhat of a bummer as it adds religion, something they'd trimmed out from previous games. Though the idea of making our own religion up sounds cool. Spies are also an old thing brought back in. I guess there's only so much you can do as far as world sims go, but kinda bummed they'd trimmed it down and are now re-adding stuff back in (Though all the DLC leaders probably was a sign of the new DLC heavy path they were taking) I'll still probably end up buying it if the price is right mind. Johnny
I expect if they're re-adding religion, they're doing it in a way that makes more sense than how it was in Civ IV
deanb
Yeah, as I said it seems you can now make your own religion and it spreads a bit like Culture does. I might boot up some Civ V again actually.
toxicitizen
Trim it down? That's probably the most positive spin on this I've seen so far. I personally wasn't too bothered by it as Civ V was streamlined to a point where I eventually found myself in a position where I actually understood all the elements at play at any given time and was able to micro-manage efficiently (that certainly wasn't the case when I was playing Civ III. And I could never get into IV, fuck that horrible UI to hell!). But more often than not, I've seen people bitch and moan about them having "removed features", and espionage and religion are the ones that come up the most often. A friend of mine (huge Civ VI fan, obviously), was pretty annoyed by the lack of those two things. Then again, recently I've come across discussions where people felt the religion aspect of Civ IV was shit, so whatever. Personally I'm glad they're coming back, but I'm also glad I've had time to properly learn a "simpler" version of the game and get a good handle on all the basic functionalities. I always find it a bit daunting to start a new game of this kind and immediately find myself drowning in 2 expansions' worth of content, with 30 new units, and new features and whatnot (another reason I could never be bothered to get into Civ IV). So when this comes out I'll actually be able to focus on the new content. I've actually been wanting to get back into Civ V for the past couple of months. Didn't take the time to do it over the holidays, and to start playing it again now that I'm back in school would feel like academic suicide. So this coming out in the summer is very nice Looking forward to it. Edited February 16, 2012 by FLD
deanb
Yeah I do feel I've been able to get into Civ V much easier. But I don't see Religion as been a pain in that, just a much improved UI and grid system. The combat is the main refined part and that's where I always cocked up on before. I always had enough to defend myself, but I could never wage war. I had to win over folks with massive amounts of culture and just gobble up cities through revolution. Of which Religion also helped. Now I take out huge chunks of the board with my army, but taking someone in through culture is much harder.
toxicitizen
Agreed. I much prefer the more chess-like combat in Civ V where unit placement is actually more important than having a stack of 20 units on a single tile. And the UI is just awesome. Like I said, the UI in IV is actually the main barrier as to why I could never bring myself to want to try and figure everything out. It was just so clunky and unintuitive. TheMightyEthan
http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/05/civilization-5-gods-and-kings-finds-religion-release-date-on-j/ June 19 for Gods and Kings. I cannot fucking wait. Yeah, combat is much improved in Civ V over Civ IV, though some more stacking would be nice. I'm fine with not being able to stack military units, because the stack of doom is a broken system, but it would be nice to be able to have more than one support unit in a tile. I don't think letting multiple workers sit in the same tile is broken like the combat was with the stacking. If it were up to me the only change I would make to the combat is I would have two types of land combat units: ranged and melee, and I would let you have 1 ranged unit and 1 melee unit per tile. Still wouldn't let you put multiple units of the same type on top of each other though.

Mister Jack
I'm running into an odd issue where I'm not able to launch multiplayer games that are loaded from save files of previous sessions. I can find the file and call it up, but the launch button is greyed out. Anybody else ever experience that?
toxicitizen
Gods & Kings is up for pre-order on Steam with 10% off. http://store.steampo....com/app/16870/ Can't get it right away but I'll probably be able to in a week or so. Summer sale is very likely right around the corner, though, but I'm not sure I'll be able to wait. :/ Woke up at 6 am this morning and having fuck all to do I decided to start a game. Ended up playing until noon and won a cultural victory in a little over 400 turns. I think it's time to bump the difficulty up a notch. I kinda feel like starting another game later tonight but at the same time I don't really want to get burnt out on it again right before the expansion comes out. deanb
http://www.2kgames.com/blog/civilization-v-is-coming-to-the-steam-workshop With Gods & Kings comes Steam Workshop intergration. I hope Steam actually makes Steam Workshop a tad easier to access. It's all a bit out of the way atm.

Mister Jack
How does religion work in Civ V anyway? What's it do?
TheMightyEthan
There's a video in the Civ V thread that explains all the additions.
Mister Jack
But how does religion help you win the game? What does it DO? That's the part I can never seem to find an answer to.
TheMightyEthan
Well it gives different bonuses to your empire depending on how you craft the religion, similar to social policies, as well as affecting diplomatic relations. I'm not sure if there's a religious victory type or not though.
toxicitizen
I doubt it since religion is mostly important in the early-game and takes kind of a backseat in the late-game when espionage comes into play. TheMightyEthan
They just announced a new expansion, called Brave New World. It's major additions are trade routes and ideology. The thing about trade routes now being disruptable sounds both interesting and like it could be frustrating.
TheMightyEthan
Here's the official page. toxicitizen
I want to be excited about this but I bought Gods & Kings at launch and barely touched Civ V since then. I've been meaning to get back into it for months but I can never find the time.
TheMightyEthan
Man you really should. Gods & Kings is great.
toxicitizen
Yeah, what little of it I've experienced was great. I'd love to play a long game and really dig into the espionage system.
