So this has been on my mind a while, and currently acting upon it.

The recent update of the board brought with it a "Like" System. Now I've yet to enable it as the rep system has been doing us well enough. However I thought I'd throw the option out there. My main aim in shifting over to a "Like" system would be that:

1) Maybe encouraging folks to post content n such. You post something cool, folks can "like it".

2) Folks will maybe report stuff instead of neg repping it.

3) It'll stop the personal witch hunts that happen when you get negative reputation. I can see all the voting types and I can tell you 70% of the time your assumptions on who downvoted you are wrong.

Theoretically 1 and 2 shouldn't be an issue with the current reputation system, but the current reputation system is more "I agree/disagree with this post" than "this is good content/this adds nothing to the discussion" as originally intended.

So, thoughts?

Oh yeah, it shouldn't wipe the currently accrued reps, so swapping back shouldn't be an issue if folks they dislike Like.

I would also move to the "like" option - it's more positive and encourages discussion, rather than just down-voting something without giving a reason. I do think that a lot of the time once someone has backed themselves into a corner in an argument whatever they then say, regardless of whether or not it has merit just gets down-voted and it all just seems a bit ugly.

Having said that I would be a bit gutted as I just got to 100! :(

Oh I should note that when you like a post it will pin your name to it. Though that doesn't change much as you can check who has up-voted folks posts from their profile. Does that change it for folks? If not seems there's a fairly positive reaction to changing/trying out so I'll shift it over later.

I like this thread.

*searches for thread like button*

*finds only post like*

boo

I don't mind either way. Though I might be more tempted to press like if it says I like it rather than it says a number which makes it odd to know who liked what :P. Right now I ignore rep.

It would mean I wouldn't be tempted to go upvoting and downvoting posts just to restore karmic balance.

*Edit* - Also, I like the ability to "unlike" things, because I'm retarded and occasionally up or down vote something I didn't mean to.

That should be coming next version. At the moment it's that "Follow Topic" up top. They'll be combined under a unified "Like" system.

I definitely agree with this. Fat fingers.

But I love my bad reputation!

My reputation might not be much, but I did like seeing that I was friendly. How will I know if I'm friendly now?

I wasn't being totally serious of course about the like entire posts but good to know it's coming. However yeah liking statuses would be nice if it was working again.

Personally I don't want to like or dislike any post because opinions are great and I hope try to come off as agreeing or disagreeing regardless of hitting like/dislike :).

But yeah I do agree that at times when we strongly disagree with someone the rep system can be a force of antagonism.

And @peeter01 it still tells you if you're friendly on your profile page :P

As far as "Liking statuses", the guy stopped updating it so it doesn't work on the current system. In fact it doesn't just "not work" it breaks it a bit too. It'd be awesome to have back mind, but it seems no one else is working on an updated replacement.

The "Like" system is still built upon the reputation system, so it will add to the overall reputation you have. Which I'm not so sure on cos the "Like" thing isn't really a "reputation system". Which as I was told in a PM last night is how it was used for some of you, i.e "this person is a dick", "oh so says the rep system on his profile". Thing is that's how it was meant to work out. Those that provided a crappy experience, made pointless posts etc would have a negative reputation, and those that made good posts, providing great info and were helpful would get a positive reputation. Though over time it became "those that went against the grain got a negative reputation". So it became a bit less helpful.

So with the "Like" system hopefully it'll be used to promote good content and posts. While for those that are abrasive or posting fucking all, are reported instead (hover over the bottom of a post, it pops up along with Edit and..Delete for you guys?). Not that I feel it needs using more often, but I've had a few moments where folks have mentioned past events and how nothing came of it. Well cos none of you report stuff (except that 1000AD guy. Which I'm working on how to make a "this guy is legit" identifier), you guys tend to just heavily downvote folks instead.
