Threadless had a sale so I spent some money there (I blame MaliciousH) and picked up these two shirts as well as the one linked above.

Also, I guess my headphones came with $30 in Amazon MP3 credit so I bought a few albums I love but hadn't got around to properly buying. Most notably My Morning Jacket's Circuital and Wilco's Sky Blue Sky.

Battra, I have not heard great things about the front load washers. I was looking at them myself. Someone told me they tend to hold in odors as they get older, which is why the washing machine cleaner products have become popular. I would investigate that before purchasing, just to be on the safe side. Never hurts to check it out.

We ended up going with the larger Kenmore models (which are LG guts with a different brand sticker on them) and opted for the maintenance contract on that one. I NEVER buy extended warranties but this actually adds once a year checks where the service man comes in and takes it apart, cleans it and replaces worn parts (kind of like an oil change for a washer.)

My friend (who works part time at Sears) told me it was like I cheated the system as I took advantage of a fantastic sale and picked out the pieces perfectly. We paid under $3K for a top of the line washer/dryer and a decent fridge and freezer (which my electric company will give us a $50 rebate on each as well) and then we got about $40 in reward points.

You're electric company will give you a rebate for appliances that use less energy? That seems... odd.

Not really. See, the electric company doesn't make anything off of electricity they provide to your house, just a "delivery" or "transmission" charge. Besides, if they can reduce the amount of power being supplied they won't have to purchase as much. Energy efficiency and conservation help the utility industries actually.

Edit: That reminds me, the new house is filled with incandescent. I'll have to start replacing them soon. I wonder where I can get a good deal on LED bulbs.

I went skulking about Craigslist the other day and happened across a decent TV for $5 that I could hook all my old consoles (the PSX, Dreamcast, Saturn and PS2). Felt like a reasonable use of a fiver to me.

Bonus: The dude had an entertainment center that he was just giving away to boot! Awwwwwwwwwwww yeah.

Then how do they make money?

Also, how do LED bulbs compare to CF? We've got all CF right now.

They get a delivery charge that's set in the rates. There's actually a lot of crap built into the rates (to pay for people who don't pay their bill for instance) but basically what happens is the states say to the electric companies, "HEY YOU GUYS!!!!" and then they go on to mandate that if certain energy efficiency goals are met, the rates can be adjusted to achieve a level of profit. The customer still pays less (though at a higher rate) but overall profits are maintained.

The thing is, and this should be obvious to anyone but the most staunch environmentalist, that you can't grow by conserving. However, if a gas company can hook up 10% more customers using the same amount of gas, they will see an increase (or at least less of a drop) in profits due to the way rates work. You'd have to check with your state to see how they are regulated there. Your gas or electric bill should outline some of the rates but not all will be clear as there are a lot of hidden taxes.

I dunno, I'm going to do some research before I switch over. I'm not a fan of CFLs at all (I think they flicker a bit and give off an ugly green light.) Basically I want something with perfect light as the incandescent but with a fraction of the energy cost.

iPhone case from Amazon. It's a great case. I tried going to stores to get a case, but most cases are really really awful looking and really expensive. Or theyre cheap and useless as protection. The Amazon case is perfect. I tried to put on the screen protector, but I fucked it up and threw it away instead. I hate those things.

You can get good CF's that don't flicker and are the same color as incandescent. Ours are all nice and yellow.

Hmm, I'll have to look more into them. My parents were early adopters (paid off in their electric bill) but their kitchen just always looks weird.

One positive thing is my house was designed that it has plenty of windows so while my wife and I have been working on the place we haven't had to turn one light on (except in the basement, of course)

Which brings me back to the topic at hand. I've bought lots and lots of paint and painting supplies lately.

Sky Blue Sky is such a good record. I listened to it for the first time in years last week. I can't believe it's been 5 years since it came out. Still not as good as A Ghost is Born but better than Wilco The Album, I think.

Have you heard their newest album? I think it released last year, but it's not bad. Not Yankee Hotel Foxtrot or A Ghost Is Born, but not bad.

Yeah, Wilco is probably my favorite band, outside of The Beatles. I like The Whole Love a lot, Born Alone might be the best song I heard all last year. Song for song, it's probably their strongest album since in a long time. But there's nothing quite like the magic of Yankee Hotel + A Ghost is Born (and maybe Being There).
