Faiblesse Des Sens
DRM for music is a thing of the past. Apple was holding out there which is why I specifically mentioned that even they went DRM Free 3+ years ago. The Instant Video thing isn't Fire exclusive. You can use it on your PS3 or computer and I'm sure other things. Plus, I think you have to have Prime to use it anyways, which is another example of them wanting you to be a part of their ecosystem rather than use specific services. The point is just to get people into the ecosystem. This is pretty basic stuff. You get people there, you get them buying anything, even if it's completely unrelated but they happened to see it or thought of it, and Amazon makes money. TheFlyingGerbil
I'm sure they're not expecting a 100% conversion rate to paying customers but it definitely does work. say you now want to buy an album, if you see it for the same price on amazon and a site you hadn't used before (e.g. 7digital) then you are most likely to choose to buy it from Amazon as you're already set up to buy from there now you've had your free download. Also, there are plenty of people who are not keen at all to buy digital anything, so giving them a free go at it so they can see it is not too scary may mean they are willing to pay money in the future, also there are a lot of (maybe older) people that are given a tablet for christmas, who are not computer savvy, so having an offer like that may make them aware of something they didn't even know existed before. Also, for all your complaining about it, you have their app store installed and are using it for a decent while if I think about it, and have used this offer also. So already they've moved you from being just an app store user to an app store and mp3 user so they are giving you a guided tour of their digital world and you are taking it. Maybe that is worth a digital pound to them.
deanb
Ah yeah, the Playstation 3, a fantastic android tablet. And having to be a Prime user surely makes it even more expensive to get into? And sure, get folks in an ecosystem, but it's a cruddy ecosystem if you're giving whole products away for free with no in-built monetisation plans. Especially if your app store sucks to use even for getting the free stuff. About the only reason you'd use it to purchases apps is if you're stuck with a Kindle Fire in which case without rooting it's your only choice. @TFG: I was set up with Amazon years back when I bought things from their main store, the point of this offer (which only available to those already with the App store as mentioned previously) isn't there to bring you into Amazons ecosystem. Yes, I've being using the App store a while, and it is shit which is why I only download the free apps. I don't want to be tied into their shit. I've being using it for about 5 months and have downloaded 17 totally free apps, which includes stuff like World of Goo, Plants Versus Zombies, Tetris, Jamie Oliver. I'm not a digital pound at this point, I'm heading into quite a hefty cost. In their digital realm I have spent to date 20p, and that was for the 1,227 QI Facts book for Kindle. Note how I bought this because of a sale. IF your two options are free and full price, it doesn't give much wiggle room. Compare this to Google Play, which doesn't have a daily free app and doesn't throw out £1 credit, but does have sales and I've bought quite a few apps up to now. Mal
Needed a new shoe so why not a more durable work boot? Edit: My current daily shoe, a Nike, has some minor minor holes but the sole is pretty much worn flat to the point that its not reliable on wet and/or sloped surfaces. This boot isn't too high that it'll be a pain to take on and off each day plus its waterproof. Will people notice my return and purchase of this boot instead? Too bad the other one shipped already... returning that ASAP. Edited January 10, 2013 by MaliciousH

I'm guessing their inbuilt monetisation plan is the millions of other digital products they have for sale. also information on customers is worth a lot of money to them, e.g. they now know you like soundtracks, video games, final fantasy etc. so they may target their advertising to you to reflect this. My point had nothing to do with you buying physical stuff from their main site - my point was they've got you in to their digital ecosytem with their free offers and £1 voucher.Which you otherwise wouldn't have and like I said I'm sure they're not expecting a !00% conversion rate, but just because you haven't paid for anything that doesn't mean no one has. I don't even get what you're trying to argue about at this point? Free offers definitely work it's a use of advertising spending at least as effective as an actual advert, which is why most retail businesses use them, especially as in the case of amazon they are trying to increase awareness or market share. deanb
The recommendations leave a bit to be desired. A single song is not enough to extrapolate from. And given the main physical store is giving me all sorts too it doesn't work much when you're looking at all sorts be it for personal, family and friends, or for PXOD n such. They already had me in their system with the physical stuff on the main site though. It's Amazon, not Tesco, it's all a single account. I've had Kindle app for years and as mentioned been on the app store since it hit UK in August. I use the physical store because they've a wide range of products and stuff arrives pretty sharpish and cheap to boot. But not for everything, where things are cheaper or I've better experience with I'll go there too. Like most of my computer and electronic related purchases are via Ebuyer who I've pumped thousands(not all mine) into over the years. Compared to the 20p I've spent on Amazons digital side. And will likely remain that way. It's more than just Amazon that've done it though. And we may be visiting different retails businesses, I don't know many of them that give away full free products. And when they do I don't think it's converting to full customers. DSG set up a digital games store, gave away free games. I own Alpha Protocol from that. Bought jack shit from them since. How many people are going to buy Photoshop CS6 after the accidental give-away? Give away samples, demos, lite versions and so on, not full products. A full product you take it and run. Rest all do sales; £5 off a shop of £50. Or monetisation, like free photoshoot, and then £50 for the 6"*4" photo at the end. Anyway I'm not the one that started with the arguing, I just posted about spending my free £1 n giving the Amazon MP3 store a spin.
TheFlyingGerbil
Fine Dean. Your personal use of the service must mean the world's largest online retailer is completely wrong in their strategy. You should probably warn them, I imagine they would be very grateful to be shown where they're going so wrong.
deanb
Except I've taken no issues with them as an online retailer, as I've mentioned many times already I've being using Amazon for years and find their online retailing skills to be pretty fine. This is specifically talking about handing out digital freebies to people who are already making extensive use of their other digital freebies and them somehow thinking this is going to convert into actual paying customers of at least one of these services. If someone is taking advantage of something because it is free, assume that they will only take advantage of it when it's free. Hence most "freebies" having a catch in being either a sampler, or having some monetisation system. There's no adverts, there's no micro-transactions, it's not time limited. Amazon didn't make their money from giving things away for nothing.
TheRevanchist
"Amazon didn't make their money from giving things away for nothing." Actually, in the early years of Amazon, the stock value kept going up, even though the company had projected losses for the next 10 years. No one who was reasonable could figure it out, but the dot com bubble was still riding high in those days. Silicone Valley was the new gold in California. So...
deanb
..they did well from the Dot-com bubble and din't even have a method of giving away things for nothing back in those days.
Strangelove
I already have it on dvd, but I figure it would look tons better on bluray. I also own this on dvd, but I hear the bluray looks great. I always liked Sleepy Hollow a lot and these 2 movies come packed in together, but I hear the bluray of this is subpar. Oh well. I dont own it on dvd, so whatever.
Hot Heart
Got The Searchers on blu-ray, as well as Arthur (1981) and The Man Who Wasn't There for very cheap on DVD.
madbassman39
I bought a new mouse. People are going to hate me for it, but I bought to use for both my work mouse and my mouse on my gaming desktop. I bought a wireless Microsoft Explorer Touch mouse on sale for $27. Works great. CorgiShinobi
Eh, I do have the first Transformers on DVD because it is tolerable and has its moments. You'd have to threaten to castrate me to put the other movies in my movie collection.
TheMightyEthan
There were some pretty terrible parts (the giant steel balls, for one, and everything involving that black-stereotype duo), but overall I still enjoyed it.
