Faiblesse Des Sens
Some comic (digital) purchases. The first issue of Trillium: and about half of the same author/artists earlier series Sweet Tooth: The first issue of Trillium was spectacular and the first volume of Sweet Tooth was good (but moves a bit too fast.) danielpholt
For Science. Nah in all serious. I've heard some great things (and some less than great things) about this. It was a straight fight between this and The Place Beyond the Pines, and seeing as my Brother picked that up, figured this would be the wiser choice. Chronixal
Given the amount of internet-enabled devices now sat on living room unit, this seemed like a fairly good idea.
Faiblesse Des Sens
Nice work on getting a gigabit switch for that, too.
Alex Heat
Given the amount of internet-enabled devices now sat on living room unit, this seemed like a fairly good idea. This makes me realize that I'll need to get a new switch pretty soon too with the new round of consoles coming out and my switch only having five ports in it, four of which are occupied. So like I said in a status update, I was going to pick up an elliptical machine and was waffling on whether or not to do it now or later. Roommate told me to not worry about and that if I need money for anything in-between checks (my next check is entirely for bills), he'd cover me. This guy is a bro. Chronixal
Nice work on getting a gigabit switch for that, too. Probably overkill for a home broadband connection but rather than a device that might throttle over time or with too many connections. Plus it's the one we use at work which kinda influenced my decision.
Luftwaffles
I needed new shoes. Been wearing these for years, and it ain't broke, so I'm not fixing it.
deanb
Bought one of these cos the one I have is now fucked. And all the OEM-like batteries are all fakes that have shit reviews on lasting crap (Whereas Anker brands have a ton of reviews on actually lasting longer, which is nice) and Samsung doesn't seem to actually sell Note batteries anymore. So yeah. This'll be fun cos I've never had to buy a second phone battery (my now 3 year old Wildfire still lasts well enough), certainly never non-OEM replacement parts at that. Only needs to last about half a year anyway, anymore is golden.
Hot Heart
Liked what I'd seen so far and £12.56 (after a discount) seemed like a pretty decent price for an entire season on blu-ray.
deanb
£12 ain't bad for a single film on blu-ray so a whole series that's cracking. This is on my "to watch" list, but my "to play/watch/listen/read" list hasn't ever really shrank in recent months.
Hot Heart
Ah, well, I have this weird system in my head - partly to keep me from buying too many things until I get enough space, but also to save money where I can - whereby I have the usual 'wishlist' but with sweetspots for different things as to when I would purchase them. So, for example, DVDs = £3. BDs = £5-7. TV seasons = £10-15. Then other boxsets and things vary. It's weird, but it works OK...
TheFlyingGerbil
that's the exact price ranges I have in my head for those three things as well, except it's £3-4 for DVDs, you cheap bastard.
Hot Heart
Hehe, I have been tempted to stray, but I think, "No! You have to resist! The system is there for a reason, you maverick!" I really have far too many DVDs in cardboard boxes already... But next year...next year, I shall have a house/flat with a million shelves! That truly is the ultimate dream. TheMightyEthan
I will only buy something on DVD if it's unavailable on bluray, no matter the price.
CorgiShinobi
I will only buy something on DVD if it's unavailable on bluray, no matter the price. Ditto, though I have an exception. I tend to prefer keeping a series on the same format, though I'll shy away from that if there's clearly a difference in production by either studio and/or time from original series. TheFlyingGerbil
I usually only buy DVD if I'm not that interested or sure of the film as at £3-4 it's the price of renting it. If it's one I want to own for I'll get it on blu ray. If I ever got organised enough they would be the sorts of films I'd be streaming on netflix/lovefilm Edited September 16, 2013 by TheFlyingGerbil
Hot Heart
I would buy more on blu-ray but I already own many of the films I like on DVD, blu-rays are a lot more expensive for the most part and I don't really see a benefit for the majority of films. Plus, as with TFG, if I'm not sure whether or not I'll like something, I can check it out for much less than a trip to the cinema (definitely handy in a few cases). I also keep pretty up-to-date on film goings-on with Empire magazine, and I visit the cinema enough as it is...
deanb
Yeah, I tend to only get blu-rays if it's a film where the HDness would have much shiness and use. Say like Tron Legacy, Avatar, Superhero films etc. Random dramas, older films, etc, SD is fine.

Hot Heart
Personally, it depends on whether I find that particular film worth it. If it's a classic or such then it might be to you, but I'm not going to chance something on blu-ray unless it's incredibly cheap. I get things like Lawrence of Arabia, The Searchers and North by Northwest on blu-ray, for example. Though they're generally 'upgrades'. TheFlyingGerbil
The Fall isn't an old film, unless I'm thinking of a different one? If you mean the one with Lee Pace, that is a modern visual spectacle like the blockbusters Dean metioned. but I'm guessing films like paranormal activity and Little Miss Sunshine and things like that wouldn't be worth paying more for HD and you would enjoy them just as much in SD. So that would just be a case of "I like this film so I want the best version of it" Then there are also older films from the 80s and before that just seem to have a fuzziness to the image that I can't imagine would disappear on blu ray. I'm sure some are on high quality film, and if converted properly would look great in HD, but not all of them.
Faiblesse Des Sens
I mentioned movies that were more so dramas than anything else alongside older movies. I think you'd be surprised how great a lot of film stuff looks on blu-ray if that's what you think. Also, stuff like Akira looks out of this world in higher-resolution. I would say it's almost something you need to judge on a movie by movie basis. Arguably HD for a lot of action movies just makes effects less convincing. No, just that in dramas being able to see the stubble on an actors chin isn't really much important considering it's a drama, and you're watching it for the drama, the acting, not the shiny visual effects. As for older films, the conversion can be hit and miss, and given they weren't made for HD and above in mind don't make much use of all that resolution. Also you maybe forget my field at uni was special effects, slightly warps what I watch some films for.
TheMightyEthan
Anything filmed with the intent to be displayed in a movie theater was "made for HD". Movie projection film is much higher res than 1080p, and anything filmed for that will benefit from an HD release (unless the source film has gotten damaged in the intervening years). I agree it's not *necessary*, but I just like having a clear picture. Fuzziness bothers me no matter what it is I'm looking at. Course I'm also the one who went to the eye doctor because I noticed my vision was getting worse, and it turns out that (with my glasses) it had decayed all the way to 20/20.
