Anything filmed with the intent to be displayed in a movie theater was made with the intention to be displayed in a movie theater.

And given that Blu-Rays only came about around 7-8 years ago, which'd be around when digital was taking quite a grip anyway, I've a feeling that the eventual resting place of a film being on 16:9 1080p HDTV was rarely, unless the director was prophetic, kept in mind while making the film. Even in recent years Avatar is the only film I know of that was filmed with HDTV in mind, so anything in the first century of film is a big no-no.

Yes because film is..well film and not a grid of pixels it has theoretically infinite resolution. It's a huge over-simplification though as it ignores quality of film stock, the storage in the intervening decades, the conversion process and the source used (it's not always the original film reel). Shitty fuzzy grainy footage is still shitty fuzzy grainy footage even when blown up to 1080p, 2k or 5K and beyond.

Of course it wasn't designed for a 16:9 TV.  Letterboxes don't bother me.  The point was that if it was clear enough to show in a movie theater then it was (at least originally) clear enough to warrant an HD transfer.

Also, I did mention the possibility of the source film having been damaged in the intervening years.

*Edit* - Also, while it's not a grid of pixels obviously, there's still a minimum size unit that a given film standard can clearly display, which is roughly analogous to pixels when we're talking about whether it's justified to convert it to such and such a resolution.

4 LAN + 1 WAN gigabit/dual band wireless n router.  $38 on Amazon.  I'd been kicking around the idea of upgrading my network from 100 Mb/wireless G, but I didn't want to spend the money to upgrade just to N and getting a well-rated gigabit+N router was upwards of $100 until I saw this one.

While this wasn't part of the 50% off Amazon SSD sale (which was mostly what looked to be like not top-tier SSDs that they expected to be replaced by newer models, but still some good ones in there if anyone is curious and doesn't want to go top of the line) it was on sale at the price point I wanted. My other new computer stuff will be posted once I get it all together.

This goddamn thing changed my life. The wifi router is pretty much on the other side of the house so I got pretty crappy wifi, now its pretty awesome and even my Wii U can connect. Pretty cool for $30.

Loved the movie, but bought the bluray for the commentary, deleted scenes and line-o-ramas. Didnt disappoint.

From what I can tell Cinavia detection and blocking happens within the bluray player. How does the HDMI cable allow you to watch them when you otherwise couldn't?

Yeah, Cinavia is a thing Sony created that stops pretty much any pirated Sony movie from being played on a Sony bluray player or PS3. Itll last about 15 minutes, then youll get a notice and the movie will stop. And since its an audio coded thing, no one has figured a way to get rid of it yet. Its actually pretty clever.
