deanb
They're 99p on Amazon Kindle store in UK, so figured I'd have a looksy what the fuss was about. Though I don't really do the whole ebook thing. (or books at all of late. I used to devour libraries )
TheFlyingGerbil
what's wrong with ebooks?
Faiblesse Des Sens
Probably no e-reader. I can't imagine reading them on anything else.
Hot Heart
DRM, I guess?
Faiblesse Des Sens
That's my issue but I don't buy too many for it to be an issue. Like with comics there aren't good DRM-free options unless it's through the author themselves. For books you can get some ancient stuff but not much else. Hot Heart
I'm OK with them. Though I never spend much nor try to read them across multiple devices. Seems like Dean's problem comes from that, but mainly not paying attention to his card details. Really, though, they should be DRM-free (or less restrictive), and I've heard of Amazon's utter fuckwittery in other cases.
TheMightyEthan
I've bought some kindle books and never had a problem with them being on multiple devices (my Nexus 7, phone, and my wife's kindle).

deanb
FDS has pretty much hit the nail on the head. To get into eBooks they're generally much the same price as a paperback, and with the cost of the initial outlay of getting an eReader I'm generally on the free and cheap books and reading them on my Note. Also should be noted I posted to the forum about my purchase moments after it was made, so at this point I hadn't even come across the whole "You've gotten this on another device, please purchase another copy" crap. Which is not really an eBook issue but more of a "amazons digital content strategy sucks giant donkey balls" issue.

TheFlyingGerbil
I've nearly always found the kindle books cheaper than the paperback, maybe I'm just lucky? Also, I don't get the purchase another copy problem? Do you have both devices linked to your amazon account? My mum's kindle is linked to my amazon account, and we;ve both read the some of the same books no problems. I've also read one book over multiple devices without problems (my kindle and my phone)
Hot Heart
I've nearly always found the kindle books cheaper than the paperback, maybe I'm just lucky? Nah, I've found the same (not that there aren't some I've seen with same as paperback or plain ridiculous prices). Though I'll also look out for when they become even cheaper. TheMightyEthan
Root it and install the Kindle app. *Edit* - Sorry, for some reason I assumed that meant Nook Tablet. Can you even download Amazon books to a Nook at all? Edited October 3, 2013 by TheMightyEthan
TheFlyingGerbil
oh, I misunderstood what Dean meant, I though Amazon was trying to get him to buy two copies to use on two different kindle apps/devices not opining on the restrictions of DRM in general. I just stripped the DRM out of a book I bought on Kobo and copied it over to my Kindle. I know it's not legal but I did buy the book in digital, so I do not feel bad about it. I'm sure you could do the same thing for your nook. I also don't really think that this is a problem - Amazon doesn't pretend you can do what you want with the books when you buy them. Just make the choice that's right for you and be informed whenever you buy something.
deanb
So some of you follow me on Twitter, apparently didn't see me post this, though Hot Heart did: I'd only just bought the book, right here in the app, and as mentioned I don't own any other eReaders or such so yeah, I'd already hit my limit at zero downloads. After going through my Amazon account and deregistering my old and crummy phone and a secondary Note Amazon had decided I owned, it still didn't work. So on bus back from work I ended up finding the email for my purchase, and the follow up "oh woops" email. Turns out despite having my current card details it had used my expired card details to buy the book, processed my order without a hitch, put it in my library then gone "oh woops". So I had to load up their wonderful mobile optimised site to pick my currently active card, and hey presto it works. And promptly downloaded the book over 3G cos there's no "download over wifi only" option all the other apps considerately put in. I should repeat all of this is after I made the initial post, which was purely based on "I don't own an ereader and I find the real books to be usually much cheaper". Based on what happened after my initial post I'm kinda just reinforced on the whole "yeah let's not bother much", at least for anything that's not a good deal like Tenshis freebie book, or the QI book for 20p (which so far remains the only eBook I've read in full). Few of you already aware I've generally never had much fun with thier App store and MP3 store. Both of which I only really used cos hey free shit. I'd certainly never spend money on the Amazon App store, it's a total pile of wank and unusability and that's just to get at the one app a day. TheFlyingGerbil
You should try buying music from them instead. When I had a problem with my card the sale went through and I downloaded it fine, but they never charged me
Mr. GOH!
I buy tons of ebooks from Amazon, and I've had zero problems. Then again, I am smarter, better looking, wittier, and all-round superior to Dean, so the relative ease with which I sail through life is only to be expected. Honestly, though, I moved way too much to buy leisure books in anything but electronic form. Moving boxes of books is expensive/exhausting, and they take up lots of room in small New York apartments. Faiblesse Des Sens
Root it and install the Kindle app. *Edit* - Sorry, for some reason I assumed that meant Nook Tablet. Can you even download Amazon books to a Nook at all? For the e-ink readers you have to root it and install a regular version of Android and then do it. Which means losing all of the battery life benefits of the device. If the files are DRM free (like when you pirate!) it's incredibly easy to put them onto the device. TheMightyEthan
If the files are DRM free (like when you pirate!) it's incredibly easy to put them onto the device. Yeah, I knew that. But I feel like complaining that Amazon's DRM prevents you from using the book on a Nook is like complaining that Steam's DRM doesn't permit you to run the game through Origin. Faiblesse Des Sens
+ inside That's a Gigaybte 990FX motherboard with some stupid other name attached onto it. The procesor is an FX 8350. Both of these I bought from my friend along with 8GB of RAM. He gave me a deal based on current Newegg prices which I really can't complain about. The case I bought on my own. Would have went with windowless but the windowed one was $40 cheaper due to free shipping + a coupon. It's a really nice case. I love the cable management. It's big but it's not Xbox huge. I think I'm going to switch the side of the desk that it's on though so it looks better in the room. Right now it sticks out a bit.
Thursday Next
I've never had an issue with Kindle. Don't see DRM as a problem since I am able to install a kindle app on almost everything save my microwave oven. It all works seamlessly. Hell, my mum can use it which is testament to its ease on its own.
TheMightyEthan
^That. Though I definitely agree that a standard format that could be read by all e-devices, regardless of where you bought it, would be preferable. I know such formats exist, it's just kind of confusing to me that no companies adopt them when they don't seem to have a problem standardizing physical formats.
