We just signed the contract of sale and put the money down. Looks like it should all be wrapped up by the end of the year or early January. It's scary being an owner, and I'm still kind of astonished at just how expensive a modest condo costs in New York City. But I'm also super excited to not be paying rent to somebody else!

Sorry about the double post, but it's been weeks.

In NYC, a .5 bedroom means that there's a room that can function as a bedroom but that does not fit the legal requirements for a bedroom. Sometimes they're listed as 2 bedrooms plus an office, too, although that usually means the extra room is tiny.

In our case, the condo is currently a 2 bedroom, but one of the bedrooms is huge (for NYC; 30 feet long by 12 wide), so we are putting up a wall to split it roughly in half. But one of the new rooms will most likely not technically be a bedroom under the law because it doesn't have a window overlooking a sidewalk or courtyard, just to an air shaft (it's a fire code thing; essentially, the new bedroom will not be easily reachable by fire fighters from the exterior). This only matters if we were to rent the 'half' bedroom or if we were to sell it. The law restricts how it's sold or rented, not on how owners use it for themselves (although the city could deny the work permit to put up a permanent wall; if they do, NYC has a big market for 'temporary' walls indistinguishable from real walls that do not require permits).

When we sell it many years hence, we will not be able to list it as a 3-bedroom, but as a 2.5 bedroom. Since the new room will be plenty big to use as a real bedroom or nursery, we wouldn't call it an office (though that is how we'll be using it until we have kids). The condo also couldn't be sold for as much as a similar unit with three bedrooms. But I'm not worried at all about the unit holding its value for decades.

There's nothing like buying a new place then waiting two months to move while work is being done. :/

It was $20 during the sale, so I got one because why not.

It's great though. On the beta client (and beta firmware on the link), the DS4's headphone jack is supported (I have the Sony dongle though, probably required). It outputs sound to the controller. Pretty cool.

Steam supports DS4 controller configurations (including the touchpad), however, it seems if you use DS4 controller support, somehow the audio cannot pass through the controller (it's muted/no sound). So for now I have to use the DS4 as a generic controller. Hopefully it gets fixed soon.

Also, no noticeable lag (wired connection). I know everyone says that but I was skeptical. But it seems to be true.

$20 is a steal. It's a pretty great way to have the power of your desktop in your living room if you can swing a wired connection and maybe a powerline connection. It does have input lag but generally not enough to be a deal breaker. I just wouldn't play any online multiplayer or twitch shooter (DOOM was pretty bad when paired up with a controller) and the like. Add in a wireless KB+M or KB with built-in touch pad and you're good to go for a lot of things. I just wish for some native apps (e.g., Netflix). Maybe they'll come, maybe they won't. No big deal at this point.

I also wouldn't mind a CAT6A version down the road.

If I had the kind of housing set-up that it'd be worth one, I'd totally splash out £20 for one.

The headphone support I believe is entirely a thing with the DS4 dongle. I've got mine wired and as far as I can tell no audio pass through for it. I'd guess the DS4 dongle adds in the required drivers to show up as an audio device. Gotta love the amount of modern games with built in support for it though. About a year or so ago had to use the DS4xbox thing or whatever the program's called, to make it pretend to be a 360 pad, but most games now I get going and double bonus I even have the right buttons show up n stuff too, like the touchpad for the map in watch_dogs as an example.

I moved back home and while the place is small but it means that it is literally more efficient for me to use a dustpan with a stiff brush than to use the handheld Dyson vacuum that cuts out every ten seconds then you have to fiddle with the trigger to get it going again. Fuck that. My roommates' has this vacuum that I quite liked. It can handle a cat so it can handle people just fine. I just have to tell my grandma to NOT USE WATER to keep the dust down. That kills vacuums.

One thing that I like about this is that you can just have the canister and motor so it'll be like a canister vacuum instead of a upright so it's good for tight spaces like my parents' place.

Now I'm wondering if I can oil the motor when that times comes but for $140, whatever if it lasts a few years...

She uses water with the vacuum? There are water vacuums (we had to use one when I lived at a pub, regular hoovers only manage so much) but seems weird to use it with a regular vacuum.

I've seen a bunch of a the "can be an upright or a handheld" things kicking around of late, but for most part many just seem like a handheld with an extra long handle so usually gonna suck (Well..not suck enough) compared to a proper upright.

I'm glad most of our place is wooden floors, got a microfibre broom thing which deals with most issues, and a steam mop for wet spills n such.
