TheMightyEthan
Yeah, if that was intentional it seems like an amazing miscalculation.
Thursday Next
If it wasn't intentional, then it was amazingly... Naive? Or just plain dumb. I dunno. As dumb decisions go, it's up there with tearing apart the middle-east and handing it over as "Israel" in '47.
deanb
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-34602621 Man in Sweden dressed as some kind of anime SS officer kills two and critically injures 2 more at a school using a sword. We know what he dressed as since two students posed with him thinking he was dressed for halloween. Given the targeted school, choice of uniform and that they've found a bunch of far-right and nazi crap at his home it's thought to be a racist attack. Turkey says it had crossed into their airspace, Russia says it never left Syria. So far Russia is limiting it's ire to Turkey ("This will have consequences for relations between Turkey and Russia") rather than expanding it to include the whole of NATO or the West in general. deanb
http://www.theguardian.com/environment/2015/dec/12/paris-climate-deal-200-nations-sign-finish-fossil-fuel-era?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other COP21 results in "Paris Agreement" between 200 countries to reduce emissions over the next half a century, with the first stage by 2020. Be interesting to see if it results in anything. In order to reach such a wide agreement some of it had to be removed/unenforced. Seemingly a lot of that is to do with the US (which I know has weird rules on treaties and similar). Campaigners seem pleased though. deanb
In more pleasant world politics than usual: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/jul/28/norway-finland-move-mountain-halti-halditsohkka-highest-peak Norway is considering a mountain as a birthday gift for Finland. Be a good move for both, especially for PR n potential tourism, and a fairly small amount of Norwegian land at that, hardly prime real estate. Though of course on problem is that Finland doesn't exist.

TheMightyEthan
Tom Scott had an interesting video about it that he ended with depressing musings about whether we'll actually use the 100 years that this thing will last for to clean up the site, or if we'll just ignore it now and then in 100 years we'll be scrambling to apply another bandaid to it. Mal
China's President Xi Jinping will probably remain for life. Last time someone did this in China, I recall some funny business of cult-of-personality that caused some fun times during my (great-)grandparents' generation... which led to them to leave China back in the 70's when they were able. One grandfather didn't leave. I wonder what will happen this time.
MetalCaveman
First presidential debate... I don't know what we expected, but it probably wasn't this. Don't know whether to laugh, cry, be afraid or... something else. At least it served to bring some attention to the independent candidates, who do not get the level of support the 3 main ones do.
