fuchikoma
"Never try to reason the prejudice out of a man. It was not reasoned into him, and cannot be reasoned out." - Sydney Smith, English essayist (1771 - 1845) I'm afraid this applies to both sides, which is really as bad as it gets... No reason, just outrage.
MasterDex
The U.S. embassy had put out a statement earlier on Tuesday condemning "misguided individuals" who hurt the religious feelings of Muslims or followers of other religions. Yes, it's the free-speaking, free-thinking people that are misguided. It's certainly not the religious zealots, oh no. Saying so could hurt their feelings. On a related note, Egyptians should really begin to consider what they choose to protest over. It's great that they have the freedom to protest now but it'll all be for naught if they protest everything.
Mal
Related: http://themittani.co...ws/rip-vile-rat The person killed in the Libya riot was quite the Eve player and yes, the riot was due to that same film that caused the Egyptian riot. So what the fuck is this film? Edit: Found it and watched it a bit. Reaction: Okay... Edited September 12, 2012 by MaliciousH
TheMightyEthan
One slogan scrawled on the walls of the embassy, which is near Tahrir Square where Egyptians revolted against Mubarak, said: "If your freedom of speech has no limits, may you accept our freedom of action." I don't think you quite understand. Speech doesn't hurt anyone unless they let it. Actions can hurt people regardless. Sticks and stones and all that. @MaliciousH: What's this movie? I haven't seen anything saying yet.

Mal
I see that the video follows who the West recongize that govern China. Notice how it was under ROC until the 1970's. In reality PRC had it since the late 1940's.

Mister Jack
The Taliban recently shot a 14 year old girl in Pakistan because she spoke out about the need for better education for women. Jesus Christ. I am really at a loss for words here.
Mal
"Get back into the hole, woman." Its the concept that people are people that they don't get and its saddening.
MasterDex
I read a good quote on facebook the other day. "I measure the progress of a community by the degree of progress which women have achieved" - B.R. Ambedkar
fuchikoma
That sounds like the old maxim along the lines of "The measure of a society's civilization is seen in how it treats its most vulnerable members." There are countless versions attributed to many people, but I wouldn't say women can automatically be assumed to fill that role. Perhaps real progress lies in parity, rather than elevating one at the cost of another? Though with the oppression we've seen in Pakistan and Afghanistan, it seems quite apt to equate that with women. There may be more downtrodden, but like MaliciousH said, they need to learn that people are people.
TheMightyEthan
Yeah, it could be a measure but it can't be the measure. I mean, a society with gender equality but that still enslaved people based on race couldn't be said to be all that progressive overall.
Mr. GOH!
Yes, but if the slaves were treated exceptionally well, it could be better than a society without slaves or gender equality. Mal
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-20025626 I may be bias but this is such bullshit. As of this moment of time, there is no way to predict any earthquake. It is never for sure until it happens. So the best you can do is prepare for the worst. If I take this further... our best predictions is of the weather kind and is far from perfect as well. Next thing I know, someone is going to jail for failing to predict a tornado or the path of a hurricane. Hell, a freakishly large rainstorm can cause some damage. This sort of ruling can have potential global consequences.
fuchikoma
Wow. Convicted of non-clairvoyance. If that doesn't get overturned... it would almost herald a new dark age.
TheMightyEthan
While obviously completely ridiculous, I don't know that it's fair to say it would almost herald a new dark age. Maybe in Italy, yes, but there's nothing to say this kind of retardation would expand to other countries.
