TheRevanchist
I understand that everyone is fucked right now, but, when you have to close the banks and ATMs because of potential runs, it's a terrible situation. Last time there were runs on banks in the history of the US, things went to hell very quickly. And, they are saying Spain could be next. If I had this kind of news, I'd make sure my money was in my pocket, not in a financial instution where the government can do whatever they wish. TheMightyEthan
According to the South Korean and US governments, there is a "very high" chance that North Korea will launch a missile at South Korea in the near future. So, that'll be fun.

deanb
I've seen that doing the rounds and it annoys me that it says "mongler" instead of "monger". Spell checking is not a hard thing. Mister Jack
Yeeeah that bothers me too but I'm not about to take the time of fixing it myself. And yes, we yanks get the campaign.

Luftwaffles
Shit is going down in Damascus. Rumor has it Israel has attacked and declared war on Syria. God I hope America doesn't get involved.
Mal
If conspiracy theories are to be believed (I'm not sure of anything anymore), the US and their allies (Read Israel) are encircling and infiltrating the oil producing region of the Middle East with US/Western back regimes for the time after Peak Oil (Been doing so since Peak Oil became a thing). Might be an Israel thing with a good deal of US backing with arms and money (for PMC). None of our troops will be there but you bet the money trail will lead to back to the US. Allah Akbar, I feel like a conspiracy theorist. :\
deanb
It's a conspiracy theory that America is moving in on the oil-producing middle east region? Maybe also looking to install their own governments (replacing previously installed governments in the process)?

Mal
So.. WTF is happening in Brazil? A seemingly stable country is shaking, kind of like how Turkey was.
deanb
From what I'm to understand there's corruption going on, issues with expenses of hosting World Cup 2014 (and I'd guess the 2016 Olympics too), and the police being a bit OTT in dealing with protesters. Here's a Beeb post on it: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-latin-america-22946736
Thursday Next
I've always thought Brazil was a bit of a powder keg. Huge poor / rich divide and all that jazz. Hosts the Formula 1, but drivers can't leave the circuit for fear of being kidnapped or robbed or stabbed...
FredEffinChopin
I'm not expert on the topic, but this shit has been brewing for a long time. As Thursday mentioned, it's amazing that something on this scale didn't happen a long time ago. From what I understand, the layout of Sao Paolo itself almost seems built with the exact purpose of highlighting Brazil's economic disparity. It's funny though, how people can become so acclimated to things for so long that they just adapt and move on... We usually seem to display this tendency when it comes to political corruption. Having to make ends meet can do that. Eventually though, something like outlandish and irresponsible spending (arguably under false pretenses) on soccer will finally break the camel's back, and before you know it, the chickens are home. I hope this is a turning point. While it's already resulted in some violence, I hope the majority manage to keep things peaceful; but DO NOT get off of those streets. It seems much of the world are at various points in a very similar path. Here's hoping Brazil can set a positive example. Hopefully one day people won't essentially think "booty" when they hear "Brazil". The fact that the playground image has managed to thoroughly stifle the much more common reality over there speaks volumes.

TheMightyEthan
Yeah, I got the camel's back thing, it was the chickens that confused me. I've heard the phrase before, but infrequently enough that your shortened version didn't trigger the right thing for me, I guess.
Thursday Next
In retrospect, I don't really get why chickens coming home to roost is a bad thing, isn't having lots of chickens good, and the reason we shouldn't put all the eggs in one basket and count them before they hatch..?
Mal
Thanks for the info folks. I always saw Brazil as any other South American country. Never quite saw them as a rising (regional?) power. If so, yeah, they got to step up their game besides the World Cup and the Olympics (Seriously, who paid who for this to happen?). Now I sort of wonder who will be the next to shake. Mexico? I always seen the battles between the government forces and the cartels as something that will either blow the hell up or the cartels completely overtake the government and they become one and the same. I don't see the latter happening so numero uno. *GIANT EDIT* Dean, I think your forum is trolling me. BrainHurtBoy...2
These sorts of tensions bear out relentlessly wherever there is enormous disparity of wealth. Brazil is a rising power, but Lula and Rousseff are treating a post-colonial country like a European one (just like India and South Africa are). Brazil's "rising power" status has been given to it by economists and academic analysts of various stripes; the BRICS countries are meant to represent the success of the "developing world", when really anybody with a shred of reason can recognize that the form of "development" seen in said countries is obviously not sustainable on a global scale. The objective conditions are here. "The historical crisis of mankind is reduced to the crisis of the revolutionary leadership." - Leon Trotsky P.S. Helloooooo, NSA. Luftwaffles
(Seriously, who paid who for this to happen?). If we're talking on this point, it's not half as shameful as the World Cup going to Qatar.
Thursday Next
(Seriously, who paid who for this to happen?). If we're talking on this point, it's not half as shameful as the World Cup going to Qatar. Qatar has the number one or two GDP per capita in the world. Compared to Brazil who are ranked ~75th - 85th. Qatar can afford it. Brazil cannot.
