TheMightyEthan
Weird that the "help wanted" signal is an agent that actually has to traverse the world, rather than being more like a broadcast.
Yantelope V2
Probably to attract the nearest sim?
TheMightyEthan
I guess, yeah. The weirdest part to me is that the signals apparently traveled at about the same speed as cars, rather than being instantaneous or nearly so.
deanb
Weird that the "help wanted" signal is an agent that actually has to traverse the world, rather than being more like a broadcast. Most likely to do with how the game is made. Also if it moves by roads it know how far, by road, the person is from work (Since the sims move by road). But by a broadcast, line of sight, the sim may be just a couple of units away, but actually be a few miles of road away. edit: as for speed, possibly just to show you. He's in a debug view, I'm sure they'll have a "run these elements slowly so I can see where it's going wrong" control.
TheMightyEthan
Hopefully you'll be able to build water treatment plants to alleviate at least some of the pollution effect.
TheMightyEthan
http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/04/20/maxis-simcitys-always-online-req-not-about-piracy/ You know why we don't believe you Maxis? Because based on what you've said about the multiplayer so far it is not so fundamentally integrated into the game as to justify the lack of an entirely offline mode. It's just nifty add-on features. Honestly, for me at least continuing to try to claim that it's not a DRM measure at all is doing more damage to their image than if they'd just admit it's DRM. I can live with startup-activation DRM, but them maintaining this position damages their credibility with me, and damaged credibility is difficult to repair. deanb
I like how he says "fire" at the start. Seems really enthused.
Luftwaffles
I like how he says "fire" at the start. Seems really enthused. I kinda like that about all of these videos. The guy narrating actually seems really excited about the game. If you're going to do a dev diary, might as well sound enthused.
TheMightyEthan
These tech demos are so damn sexy... *Edit* - It's weird what huge spaces the fire was able to cross. Hopefully they'll tweak that. Edited May 1, 2012 by TheMightyEthan

Mal
That is no bueno. I want to have that option to build up the greatest city and destroy it by bringing on the Doom. :\ Sure I am content with just building a city normally but it doesn't make me happy of losing freedom of doing what I want. TheMightyEthan
I was wondering about that during the conference when they were talking about the online stuff (for some reason it hadn't ever occurred to me before). That significantly diminishes the appeal of this game for me.

deanb
New trailer from a few weeks back.Shame destruction in new game is pointless as you can't build, destroy, then reverse the save. Also it's due 8th March next year. deanb
A Sim City Q&A.I'm liking the modular stuff. I hadn't realised Terraforming had been cut :/
deanb
http://www.pcgamer.com/2012/12/20/maxis-explains-the-use-of-simcity-always-online-drm/ So it's "always online DRM" because they've offloaded some of the simulation to their servers.Which means that it's not just a simple DRM scheme, it's a case of when (not if) EA's servers go down for Sim City V (I guess around about when VI comes out) Sim City V will no longer be playable. Sim City 4, ten years on, works fine.
Saturnine Tenshi
I'm not too fond of that. : \ I think it'd be a great idea if they had the obligation to keep the servers running well after the release of the next game, and the game after that. TheMightyEthan
That's too bad, I really really wanted this game. Oh well, they're the ones not getting my money, whereas I have plenty of other games to play.
madbassman39
Well I find this news disappointing I dont think its bad enough to prevent me from playing the game. I, for some stupid reason, believe that eventually there will be a patch that will allow you to save your progress on your hard drive. I've been waiting maybe 10 years for this game, I'm not backing out now, even if it could very well be the Duke Nukem Forever of the series. deanb
Bah, such weak willed people This is why men became Nazguls. Also it's best to assume there won't be a patch that'll allow the game to run wholly on your PC, especially as there's no prior history of EA doing such a thing. And if they ever release such a thing, I'll buy the game, but until then no sale. Also, now that I think about it, I thought they said a while ago that it only required connect-at-startup, and that if you lost your internet connect you could continue to play. Did I make that up?
