Yantelope V2
Who ordered the London Symphony Orchestra? Possibly, while high. Cypress Hill I'm looking at you! Yeah, those old episodes were such genius of writing. It's hard to ask any show to live up to that level. The old premises were so simple too. Homer gets a snow plow. Lisa gets a talking Malibu stacey and such. The episodes were about a simple premise and let the crazy characters take it away. It actually reminds me a bit of what Bill Waterson said about writing Calvin and Hobbes. He said that he never has an ending in mind when he starts a story he just lets the characters do what they'd do and sees what would happen. I wish Simpsons still operated that way. I think it's clear some episodes wrote themselves into corners that way like "Trash of the Titans" where to get everything back to how it was they moved the whole town 10 miles down the road. Nexus
I've finished watching up to Season 18, and with the exception of a few episodes, it mostly got crap after Season 12 - I remember watching season 13 and thinking "this is....crap." It's a shame, but the first 12 seasons are so good, almost anything else can be forgiven.
Dee
Some of my favorite episodes are when the kids ask about when they were born and Marge and Homer sit them down and go through this awesome story about their past. I do quite enjoy the random and completely outrageous spontaneously combusting things (ie. the kids turning Ms. Krabappel's desk over and it explodes into flames; when Homer and the boys get drunk, tear up the inside of the school and drive through the baseball cage and it explodes; and when the family car is slowly sliding onto the frozen pond, they jump out, it comes to a stop and falls through the ice and then explodes). The episodes I can think of off the top of my head that I love a lot are Lisa's Wedding (season 6), Bart vs. Australia (season 6), You Only Move Twice (season 8), El Viahe Misterioso de Nuestro Jomer/The Mysterious Voyage of Our Homer (season 8)...You know what? Seasons 3 through 8 are all top notch examples of how amazing The Simpsons used to be. There are just too many episodes I love to list off! UnstableArk
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I63kqpPpsn4 Back in the glory days, they knew exactly how long to carry a joke. I grew up watching The Simpsons almost almost day back in the 90s growing up. It always showed 2 episodes a night from seasons 4-6, then 4-9 as the years went on. Growing up watching the greatest seasons of that show made me unable to settle for anything less, so when things from season 9 onward started airing around 2000/2001, I kinda just gave up on it. At least it had a good run when it did. Too many episodes to quote.
Strangelove
Yeah, one of the strongest things about the SImpsons were that the timing of their jokes were impeccable. They were just perfect at timing them just right. This was also back in the 90s and awkwardness wasnt huge yet, so they never relied on that like a lot of shows did in 2000 and forward. Yantelope V2
Ugh, the awkward pause was the worst part of the 2000 sitcom. Everyone used it and some shows were wholly dependent upon it. Arrested Development comes to mind. I don't find the tension usually that funny but I know a lot of people do. I'm much more into witty writing. Strangelove
I love Arrested Development, but i know what youre saying. It got out of hand very fast. Another thing that got out of hand that AE also the Royal Tenembaums/little miss sunshine was the rich/middle class white eccentric families. i hate movies like that now. TheMightyEthan
I love Arrested Development too, but yeah generally I hate the awkward approach to comedy.

Strangelove
What does everyone think about the head boxsets? People seem to hate them. I have or had the Season six Homer head and I like it and it actually doesnt bother me that it doesnt go with the regular boxes, but its too big for my dvd shelf. It doesnt fit. Thats my problem. If they made them smaller, the same size as all the other boxsets, theyd be great.
Strangelove
Well, Im watching season 8. Its really sad seeing some of the "newer" humor creeping in within some of the most iconic episodes of the show. It has a ton of great memorable episodes. Mr Sparkle, John Waters as...John, Can I borrow A Feeling song, Grimey, Mr Scorpio(possibly my favorite second episode ever), the episode where Homer see the alien and mulder and scully show up, Mr Burns son Larry played by Rodney Dangerfield, Poochie, and Johnny Fucking Cash playing a coyote. And Phil Hartman is still alive. Just some awesome shit. But this season also has the variety showcase episode that splits into three little mini-episodes which is awful overall, the episode where Lisa dates Nelson, the pretzel episode and most of fucking all, the Lindsay Naegle character that I really fucking hate. Its a really good season overall, but I think this is truly when the show starts stumbling.
Yantelope V2
Hey, the Pretzel episode had probably one of the best endings ever. "But Marge, that little man in the white hasn't done anything yet and you know it's going to be good!"
TheMightyEthan
Scorpio is my favorite character in that show.
excel_excel
I loved the the variety showcase episode! The writing was kind of supposed to be bad, and I found it funny that way. Chief Wiggum P.I. was awesome! some great lines in that. "Oh, man, what a day. It's no cakewalk being a single parent, juggling a career and family like so many juggling balls... two, I suppose." When Big Daddy is swimming away. Skinner "He's gradually getting away chief." Wiggum "Ah let him go. I have the feeling we'll meet again, each and every week. Always in more sexy and exciting ways." Strangelove
Well, those episodes I think are "awful" compared to the other earlier ones. theyre still good as far as the spectrum of all tv comedy shows are concerned.
Yantelope V2
I did like how they would make jokes about the show itself sometimes. At the very end of the episode where Skinner actually turned out to not really be Seymour Skinner and was actually a guy named Tanzarian they said something to the effect of "and we'll never discuss this ever again.". They did make one brief reference to it later in the show. I don't remember the exact quote but it was something about skinner saying to always be yourself and Lisa says something like "Is that so Mr. Tanzarian?" I liked those little inside jokes that you'd only get if you watched it a lot. Edited April 24, 2012 by Yantelope V2
TheMightyEthan
Though I think season 8 is the best overall, I will agree with Strangelove that the seeds of the show's inevitable decline were planted there.
TheRevanchist
And now to bring this thread back on topic with the overall forum: And the latest gaming reference on The Simpsons was when Bart was on the luxury ship reading over his list of activities to do. The first item listed was "Play XBox 360 using a Playstation controller", which is a good zing at other shows where the actors are pretending to play games.
