So I got this Alaskan Brewing Co. 2012 Smoked Porter so I can try something different to celebrate the end of finals. The smoked flavor taste like the smokiness of smoked salmon. I don't know how to feel about that but the mouth feel is what I expected: very smooth. Also the smoked salmon flavor goes away after a bit.

Also, FDS, it is going to be very hard to find the Firestone Walkers' Anniversary Ale but when I found the name plate at Bevmo, its only ~$25. Pricey for a beer but not out of the price range of people who would want to try it (I think). I'll be hounding for the components of it when they come out next year. One of them is going to be brand new to bottling... the Velvet Merkin. Its the older brother of the Velvet Merlin and supposedly its one of their best when it comes to draft. So I think I'll have to store away at least $100 for these special stuff... I think I made a mistake getting into beer. This is damn costly...

I'm not a wino but an easy way to start is just trying different grapes and regions. Just like with beer you just need to experience a wide variety. You don't have to worry about food pairing just yet. Also with table wine you have mixed types of grapes and if you're actually ordering table wine somewhere they should damn well know how to recommend you something.

You might not be a wino FDS. But you sure are a whiner

Not sure. It might depends on the beer since high demand can wipe out a supply in a few days or low demand can see one sitting out for a while. For example, I can still find Solace even though it should of stopped brewing for a long while by now.

Thinking about it some more... for the Proprietor Reserves, I think those time frames are for when its brewed and being shipped. I think once your local stores who ordered it gets it, that is it. While it may be still be getting bottled, there isn't enough liquid money to give to everyone.

I was thinking about finally finding out how I can handle alcohol, but then it hit me that it could react somehow with the medicine I take. Being the slightly paranoid person that I am, I looked some stuff up about it. Some sources said there's no known effects. Others cited more pronounced drowsiness and dizziness effects while others said that the couldn't go to sleep. I'm still hesitant to try alcohol, 'cause mixing it with medication is bad, yo, but once I get around to it...

...what would you recommend for an alcohol newbie?

Pfft, like they would know if it's the alcohol itself or the meds + the alcohol.

Anyways, don't start off with hard alcohol. You won't know your limits and you'll drink too much. I'd recommend beer or wine. Beer probably is going to taste like shit to you at this point though.

I never get a hangover at all when I drink Mike's Hard or things like it, though that's because there's so much sugar that my stomach starts hurting after like 1.5 drinks so I can't drink the rest of the night and never get drunk in the first place.

My recommendation for first-time drinkers is to start with beers or mixed drinks that are like MUCH more the non-alcoholic beverage. Easiest to move on to would be beer though. Try something standard though. Like Heineken. If you can't like the standard beers you might still like say the seasonal beers, but you'll have a much harder time finding one that you like imho.

Sorry to bring the tone of the thread down, but I was wondering which drinks are least likely to give you a hangover? Is it all just myths and speculation, is it different for different people, or can I really spare myself the misery - and no, before you ask drinking less is not an option!

I'd honestly say it depends on the person. I've drank inhuman amounts of alcohol at points in my life, and may wake up groggy and sick like once in a while but never to the point I can't move and be productive or my ears being sensitive.

I'd say beers and wine. But I think it all depends on how much of the alcohol you're drinking and not realizing it due to sugar masking the flavor.

I could use more knowledge on what beers to try. I like trying different kinds all the time.

That's exactly what you need to keep doing. Just try different types of beer that you haven't had over and over and vary brand when you've done that for everything you see regularly. You'll eventually figure out what you like.

Also JD is overpriced. Just get Jim Beam instead.
