I was reading through some stuff and fans brought up how each season is suppose to be self-encapsulating as far as story, so nothing carries over. In truth, all Varrick is is a greedy entrepreneur who is taking advantage of the seedier elements of Republic City. One of the future episode descriptions states... Reveal hidden contents Bolin saves President Raiko, which you have to speculate is going to be dedicated to progressing the subplot along. If you take care of him, there shouldn't be anything else involving Republic City. Just it seems like the smallest of subplots we could ever see in Legend of Korra. The contrast between a cosmic event of 10,000 years which decides the fate of good and evil for humans and spirits versus... The Woes of Mako in the Precarious Case of Varrick. It was like that in the last season, too. Reveal hidden contents I geeked out pretty hard when Iroh came back. It raises a question, though. What happens to normal people when they die? Iroh subtly implied that he deliberately crossed over to the spirit world through some means of his own rather than getting there just by dying of natural causes. Other than him and the Avatar, I can't recall any humans populating the spirit world, so do they get reincarnated after death or do they just cease to exist? There's not enough to go on and I don't think it's in the interest of the writers and Bryke to go into detail on the afterlife or theology of Avatar other than influences of Eastern mythology. Still, Raava didn't specifically state only Wan would be reincarnated. Just a: "I'll be with you, in all of your lifetimes." But yes, everyone watching most certainly flipped out, physically and emotionally when we saw "you know." Reveal hidden contents Again, it seems like Iroh chose to stay in the Spirit World rather than pass away like everyone else. He left his physical body and has stayed in the presence of Spirits. Early on in Avatar: The Last Airbender, it seemed like the Spirit World was a sort of afterlife for humans, but unless we see other humans aside from Avatars and Iroh, they're reincarnated versus a place where Spirits and souls can co-exist. I don't think we'll ever see a complex life-death cycle for the show. However, it kinda bothered me to think Iroh would choose to let his body die off around his family. Purposely leaving to live life with other entities than go through the cycle of human souls. It's cool to us because, well, we get to see Iroh AGAIN and who doesn't love that? I guess if there isn't a place to meet past humans, like say Iroh's son, I guess there wouldn't be a point because you could end up as a complete different person, or an animal. Speaking of, originally Monk Gyatso was suppose to be reincarnated as Momo. It was tossed out, but that shows the intention of how human souls work in this world. At the same time, Admiral Zhao mentions "the plane of existence," so maybe there are other planes of "stuff." Then there's all that cosmic energy stuff the Avatar connects too... Reveal hidden contents Iroh's presence is the strongest indicator to me, now that you mention it. If humans had their own afterlife, it would be really out of character for Iroh to forsake his chance to meet his son again in the next world. I highly doubt the show creators would simply overlook something like that, given how the episode dealing with his son was the final one voiced by Mako before he died. So yeah I'd say it's not a normal thing to have humans in the Spirit World. As for reincarnation, much of the discussion around the Avatar would imply he's the only known being to reincarnate, due to the Avatar Spirit and all that jazz. (And that can end if the Avatar and Raava die at the same time, he's only reincarnating because of Raava) I think "what happens to everyone else at death" is just a thing that's not really been thought of for the show. I'd guess if reincarnation was a normal thing in the Avatar world then Iroh might have hunted down his son, or in at least one of the many many episodes so far you'd think someone would reference a cat squirrel that reminded them of their mother or something. Especially given the high volume of orphans and childless parents and the like. As for Iroh and his son, Iroh did nothing to hasten his own death so he could meet his son. And I don't think there's anything that's said he can't eventually die to pass into human afterlife (Spirit world doesn't strike me as an afterlife either. Waldorf and Statler Posted November 16, 2013 Report Share Posted November 16, 2013 Just saw the last 4 episodes. HOLY SHIT that went full retard. Like full on Matrix Revoluton meets Evangelion. I can't say I like the direction they went with, mostly because it seems like it'd be great if this were a top notch group of writers but they've been struggling to keep a cohesive narrative this whole season and with this decision it seems like they're saying "look it was all leading to this I swear" but it just seems like they opened a can of worms they can't fully utilize. We'll see next season. Bolin stole the show these 4 episodes. He was fucking awesome. Asami got zero to very little screen time which sucked. And well at least it ended better than the first season though that final fight was extremely underwhelming compared to anything from the first Avatar. Reveal hidden contents - I'm kinda glad Eska and Desna didn't stick around, even if I do love Eska's voice actress it'd be hard to get her for two seasons in a row when she has a commitment to another long time running show. Kinda sad Bolin and her didn't end up together but eh, Bolin also has the very much "all looks no personality" Ginger waiting for him. At least he got some well overdue romance this season. Speaking of romance, I'm extremely glad Mako and Korra ended on a good note. Knowing these writers this'll probably mean they are going to introduce a new love interest for her next season. Maybe make Iroh a bigger character and make him into it, or a new character all together. - When I say full retard I mean it. I did not expect what amounts to a giant mech/godzilla fight in this show. - I can't believe that the chief of police, what's her face, didn't actually believe in Mako and they actually DID write her character to be this stupid this season. Reveal hidden contents Tenzin being reassured of his identity, seeing Admiral Zhao, Mako and Bolin defending the Spirit Portal, and Eska and Desna were great characters. Bolin was bringing his A game because he was perfect in all his scenes. Bumi got his chance to shine, and shine he did. The writers were smart to quit the Makorra relationship (as much as I liked it) because you shouldn't recover from that, IMO. Varrick wasn't super evil, or even that evil, just crooked... BUT still highly entertaining. I hope we see more of him (and that Zhu Li). But the major stuff, I mean, it feels out of place. Reveal hidden contents People weren't lying when they were saying "Pacific Rim" and Evangelion. The cosmic representation of the Avatar became a frickin' spirit mecha. No exaggeration. Unaloq might as well have been a waterbending Kaiju, going straight for Republic City reeking havoc at the bay with the United Forces Navy attacking. And the hell was Jinora? Some conduit of light? I almost want to say "deus ex machina" because she came out of nowhere after leaving to who knows where to flash light which (I guess) made it easier for Korra to pull out Raava. What did she do? I mean, why make that exact struggle? Jinora could have returned, Korra would still have to get into her spirit mecha, and maybe make her struggle a bit, but ultimately pulling out Raava. Did we really need Jinora's spirit turning the tide? I do like how Korra considers Unaloq's words concerning the connection between the Physical and Spirit Worlds. it should be interesting, given that it does seem like having one person being a bridge might be a tired policy. If worse came to worse, Korra (or a future Avatar) could close the portals. However, it does seem like a tall order for anyone to write on. Korra just started a new wave of Avatars with her being the first. So the era of the old Avatars is gone for good, I don't know if she'll really be as strong now in the Avatar state as what was explained before was that in this state this was the combined power and knowledge of all the previous avatars, while in this season they explain it's Raava I don't know what to believe in anymore. Hopefully more sight seeing of the world too, since there's still the entire fire and earth nations left to check out. Reveal hidden contents Keeps them from being dragged down a fair chunk by Aang too if he's "gone". The world of Korra was mostly at peace, TLA had a big war to go up against, but until this event there was no huge ongoing struggle. Just little skirmishes and petty political/business things. The writers can't just have a big ass war again, it'd make TLA seem a bit pointless. But introducing an overlapped spirit and physical world means there can be conflict and it's bit less political. Which end of the day it's a kids show and that stuff can get dull. Talking of Politics, still bummed by the creation of the president instead of the council. Seems a bit of a pointless and unexplained change. Also Lin really needs to be resolved next book for why it seemed like she became temporarily retarded. So take into account we're already done with book 2 and they may already be animating book 3. I recall a big issue with book 2 was that they switched animation companies and they couldn't deliver, so about halfway they went back to the one they usually use. Now that the season is over, everybody feel like the animation wasn't as top notch quality as before? The faces and everything just looked off for me. However, there were moments where I felt it got sloppy, namely when there was action, but also after Beginnings I swear they were getting lazy with character details. As far as the actual ending, which will lead into Book 3, I like where it's going. I just didn't really prefer the events before it other than the small bits like Tenzin's spiritual growth and Team Avatar getting back together. The whole Lin thing baffles me and strikes me like the writers did put more thought into Harmonic Convergence. Reveal hidden contents Like, isn't kinda weird how everyone begins to gush over Mako being right? Besides Lin remarking how Mako is "one of their best" (while he's locked up), Mako is freed and a whole room of friends and coworkers give him applause. I guess it could be for all the work he did beforehand, but it feels strange how it comes off as "You're the smart one, Mako! Cheers!" EDIT: Oh, but as far as Book 3 premiering, it'll be much faster than the time gap between 1 and 2. Don't just take my word for it. Reveal hidden contents -Lin: I'm operating on the assumption that she really was just playing dumb to give Varric a false sense of security. You'll notice she and some other cops were already at his box to arrest him before the goon even confessed that it was Varric that hired him.
