Mister Jack
So putting aside whether the ending was good or not... What exactly happened to Unalaq and Vaatu? Doesn't purifying dark spirits just send them back to the spirit world or something?
CorgiShinobi
The generally accepted (and best case scenario) is that... since Unaloq and Vaatu were "purified," a.k.a. destroyed, while in an Avatar-like State, the Dark Avatar is no more. Unfortunately, that means in 10,000 years Vaatu will reemerge within an Avatar. It's 10,000 years down the road, so who knows what will be up, but if there is an Avatar, that kid is going to be going through a lot worse than just puberty. Hell doh, Korra don' gotta worry 'bout dat crap!
deanb
She's left a lot of crap for future Avatar's. 10,000yr Avatar has to deal with Vaatu emitting from them, and the next earth bender Avatar has to deal with the fact they've only got Korra to chat with. Waldorf and Statler
thank god she's grown as a character, but even then She doesn't seem very wise, so the next Avatar lost the lottery with her. Aang had that wise Fire bending guy, and she had Aang. I guess it depends on how old she dies
deanb
She's still got two books to go. In which she can; - Kill the last lion turtle - Destroy the walls of Ba Sing Se - Ignite a Spirit-Human war - Knock the rest of the Western Air Temple off the cliffs - Die young and inexperienced - Die in the Avatar state - Release Azula onto the world. - End up under Lake Laogai - Go OP in her waterbending and either cause a massive flood or stop rain for a long period of time. TheMightyEthan
Self-afflicted ignorance is bliss eh ? More like death of the author. I don't care what they intended, only what can be reasonably inferred from the events that were depicted.
CorgiShinobi
Supposedly we're going to have a lot more of Lin in Book 3, so hopefully she's off her stupid pills and begins acting like the bamf we all grew to love in Book 1. CorgiShinobi
It's time to get hype for Legend of Korra Book Three "Change" is definitely happening in this Book. Just, there's so much YES to this trailer. Also, be careful if you're going to be looking for more Book 3 info. A few days ago there were actually leaked episodes... in Spanish, and translated back into English. Not the first episodes mind you, but like the middle of the Book. deanb
For international people. Apart from Zuko I'd say it show next to nothing. All rather contextless fights and explosions.
TheMightyEthan
It showed what appeared to be non-Air Nomad airbenders.
CorgiShinobi
It seems to imply that, maybe, the increase of spiritual beings may have unlocked bending capabilities in some non-benders. Bending is one part spirituality and one part genetics. Bumi is a son of Aang, so while he has been a non-bender, he has technically carried airbender genes. If he ever had children, one of them could have been an airbender, though it would have been very unlikely. Now we see him protect himself with a bit of air, unless we assume maybe Earth Nation airbender kid saved him from the small projectile. But also we have an airbender villain. Seems the whole lot of elements will have a corresponding villain, including Combustion Girl, a.k.a. Sparky Sparky Boom Girl. Oh, and someone is lavabending. Something is definitely up because only Avatars have been seen lavabending, from the Unnamed Fire Nation Avatar (nicknamed Jafar) all the way to Aang. Why only Avatars? Because lavabending is a specialized mix of fire- and earthbending. EDIT: To add a little more, someone GIF'd good parts of the trailer. Imgur Gallery To illustrate my theory on Bumi, this has to be him directly behind his brother Tenzin. deanb
With the "lava bending" would it not be possible it's not just fire benders igniting oil coated rocks that earth benders are flinging? Bear in mind the Avatar was able do multiple due to the combination with a spirit, so theoretically there's little stopping another spirit combining with other people (just got to have the will to not die from it quickly) (mid-edit: oh wait I've now gone through those gifs, yeah I see that guy. Though maybe he's a firebender heating the ground. I dunno. Then again Lightning was a big thing in TLA and in LoK it's a thing a fair chunk of firebenders can do and it's just a job at the plant now.) But yeah on the bender front it'd make sense to see more of the popping up now it's sort of heading to a bit like pre-Avatar days. Maybe even the Lion Turtle(s) might return. I assume this is post-metal bending earth nation city? Those leaves look like they're built to close up and protect the city. Man this should be good if we get some more journeying around. Book 2 was getting there on the whole "leaving Republic City" but still headed back way too often. Oh god...wonder if we'll have more...err Varkas? The business man guy. TheMightyEthan
Re lavabending: Not only Avatars have been seen lavabending. Sozin did it in The Avatar and the Firelord Part 2. My understanding was that lava is earth and fire put together, so both earthbenders and firebenders can bend it. It might take an especially powerful firebender, but it's doable. deanb
Wasn't that just straining off the heat in Avatar & Firelord? I know there was the prophecy episode too, though for the most part Aang just made a trench and did some high powered air bending to save the village, not sure he did much "lavabending" directly. For most part Lava is just super-hot earth, so would make sense to be a earth bender trick, though of a higher skill like sand, since they're both somewhat fluid. Probably be hard to learn though given there's not a huge amount of volcanos about compared to beaches (well except for in fire nation I guess, though Earth Benders don't tend to be found there). Creating lava though would need both though, but as I said you can just get a firebender to flame the rocks a bit.
TheMightyEthan
Oh yeah, I didn't mean firebenders could create lava to bend, I meant they could bend naturally occurring lava. The fluid thing is a good thought. It would be cool if earthbenders typically couldn't bend lava, but some learn to do it by studying waterbenders. deanb
See Lightning was meant to be the "when fire benders study water benders" stuff so you'd think other benders could expand their technique somewhat by studying other benders and incorporating into style. Dragon fire bending was somewhat related to Air bending too, being about breath and heat as a life giving element (like air). Toph learnt sand bending, driven the by the incident in the desert but likely got a hand in it by hanging out with one of the most powerful water benders of the time. It's something that could be explored quite well, mixing up the bending styles with different elements.
TheMightyEthan
Well my thought with the lighting was that in TLA they established that in order to create lightning you have to be calm and peaceful, but that the firebending techniques of the time relied on violent emotions like anger for their power, and the two are mutually incompatible. Fast forward 70 years and Zuko's reforms have moved firebending closer to its origins and people don't rely on their anger anymore so more people can produce lightning. And Iro said that studying the waterbenders was how he learned to redirect lightning, but it's not necessarily how one learns to produce it. All that said, I totally agree that they could do some cool stuff exploring what happens when various benders study the techniques of the others. CorgiShinobi
Perhaps the villain is a firebender and he's creating a pseudo-lava from stones, but that seems nearly impossible for one firebender to create a sudden gush of lava in the middle of an Earth Kingdom road. Actually, he's suppose to be the eathbender villain of the group, so perhaps he's able to pull up magma underneath the earth, but maybe not fully harness it. These villains must have some power up burst in their abilities as the waterbender woman is able to waterbend water whips for arm replacements, but almost everyone in this universe has had to use full-body motion to bend. We had King Bumi earthbend with only his face back in The Last Airbender. In Legend of Korra, Yakone and his son Noatak, a.k.a. Amon, were the only waterbenders to use a near telepathic form of bloodbending. Tarrlok was a strong bloodbender, but he still had to use motions. deanb
Isn't the water whip stuff a pretty basic move? I'm pretty sure Aang and Katara learned it fairly early on. In general one of the minor flaws I'd say LoK has, and I've said it for a while, is that way too many people are way more powerful. It's not DBZ levels of stupid, but it makes sense to ground it somewhat.
Waldorf and Statler
That trailer needed less Mako, more Bolin. Seriously I'm tired of Mako fangirl-ism I want more Bolin.
