Battra92
I was thinking about this after hearing some of the complaints about the new Playstation and Xbox possibly having a form of lockout to block used games, there have been more changes to how games are and should be priced. So I'm curious as to what drives your decisions to pay a certain price for a game. I never EVER EVER pay $60 for a game. EVER! The only case I might would be if there was a seriously awesome LE and you can bet your boots I'd be finding a coupon or using gift certificates or something. I'll pay $50 if it says Mario or Zelda or Smash Bros on it or it's a niche title I wish to support (such as Deathsmiles) $30 is my serious consideration for AAA titles. $20 is my purchase point for AAA titles. My wife will never pay more than $20 for any game (including AAA titles like Final Fantasy) $10 is my absolute MAX for PC titles. I'm cheap like this but PC games are essentially just elongated rentals, usually and have no ability to resell. $5 or less is my impulse spending point. If I find a game I want for $5 or less, I'll buy it. What are your limits?
Yantelope V2
For me it usually breaks down to $60 for Halo or COD or whatever multiplayer shooter I'm going to be playing. Usually these games take forever to drop in price anway and if I want to play with my friends I have to pay for it. I'll pay full price for titles I'm really excited about like a new MGS or an obscure game that might be hard to find like Xenoblade. $30 for games I'm really excited about like LA Noire, Deus Ex or RDR or other such games. $20 is my entry for other games that I'm wanting to play but can wait until I get around to it. (Infamous 2, Gears of War 3) $10-15 is my level for buying games to add to my backlog because I'm going to play them at some point and I know they don't usually drop much cheaper. (Bulletstorm, Red Faction Armageddon, Alpha Protocol).
TheMightyEthan
I'll buy games I'm really really excited for at $60 (or higher if there's a LE I want). I'll pay $30-45 for games I'm pretty interested in but not just dying for, depending on how interested I am. $10-20 for games I'm on the fence about. $5 is my impulse point. Strangelove
I pay 60 for games for sequels to games I loved. Or for games that come from a developer I really like. That's really it. ME3 and Catherine come to mind. I just want to play them as soon as I can. Paying 50 is just stupid. Just wait for 40. I pay 40 for games that I really want, but not immediately. Id say RE6 and Deus Ex HR 2(?) qualify. I pay 30 for games that I know are probably good, but that im on the fence about. Batman Arkham City is a good example. I liked AA< but I didnt love it. Yet AC has gotten great reviews. I think thats worth 30 bucks. 20 is everything else. Games I know ill like but have some sort of flaw or games that I MIGHT like, but have good production. Mostly AC Revelations and even stuff like El Shaddai. I dont have either yet, but im not expecting them to get lower. Id buy them now if I had the money. 10 and under for dlc and really old games. I got Brutal Legend for 5 bucks a few months ago. Its so old that it felt ok to pay that price. I have nothing against its quality since I probaby would have paid 20 bucks for years ago. But I just forgot.
TheMightyEthan
Oh yeah, I won't pay more than $10 for DLC unless they've *really* convinced me it's a large expansion and worth the money. Same goes for XBLA/PSN-type games.
Yantelope V2
For the record I've kind of sworn off Limited Editions after the price went from $60 to $80. In the xbox days I'd pay an extra $10 for the steelbook and the making of DVD. I admit the LE's are cooler now but $80 is just a ton of money. The caveat is that I bought the HE version of MW3 for the map packs and I bought the Zelda CE because I needed another wiimote. If I can get a LE for cheap then I will pay a little more. I managed to get the SWTFU II CE for $20, the Batman AC CE for $35 was also a steal.
TheMightyEthan
I am less likely to pay for a LE the more expensive it is.
Yantelope V2
What's the most you've ever spent on a single game? I think for me it was Street Fighter 2 on the SNES. It was $83 which is like $123 today. They were gouging for it at the time because everyone wanted it. I had to have it.
Strangelove
Im never getting any CE unless its on sale weeks or months after the game came out. Not first day. Fuck that. The extra content is hardly ever worth the extra money youre paying. Honestly, Ive only bought 2 - Dead Space 2 and inFamous 2. I got DS2 on release day and the CE was disappointing. Then I got the inFamous 2 CE a month or 2 after release for 60 bucks and it was amazing. THAT one was actually worth 80 bucks(it was originally prices at 100). A damn good figure AND a damn good quality backpack. ive been using that backpack for almost a year. Its still in really good shape. I dont use the figure though. Im just not a figure guy. I need to find something to do with that thing. Maybe sell it.

I'm thinking it has to be the Neptunia LE for $60 or the Atelier Rorona LE (also around $60) but I got cool artbooks out of the deal. I am tempted to sell them, though as I haven't had enough time to actually play them. I bought both with gift cards. They were the last $60 games I bought and I wasn't married then so I had more "MY" money. Being married has caused me to be an even cheaper gamer than I was before. TheMightyEthan
If you don't count the Rock Band bundle with all the instruments then it was probably the $80 I spent on the Mass Effect 3 CE.
Yantelope V2
Yeah, I'm not counting bundle packs with controllers and things.
Thursday Next
I love the super special editions with things in them. I bought the GT5 one for just under £100, the God of War trilogy for £80ish. The Assassin's Creed White Edition and Brotherhood Codex Edition for about £60. I also acquired the Crysis 2 Nano Edition through shady means... But yeah, generally I'll spend a fair bit on games. Being in the industry I do get a fair few freebies slung my way too which is quite the bonus.
TCP
I'll pay 60 dollars for games all the time. I have no problem spending that, especially on games like Skyrim or Mass Effect 3, where I know I'm going to get my money out of them. If a game's been out for awhile, and I want it, I'll wait for a price drop (Reckoning), as long as I have something else to play (which is always, my backlogs been growing and growing for 2 years now). Luftwaffles
I don't actually think I've ever spent $60 on a game. Mass Effect 3, Battlefield 3, and Saints Row 3 are really the only games at a $60 price point I've ever preordered or got on release, and I don't think I spent more than $50 for any of those. I guess that's one of the pluses of PC gaming, as I think all of those came from somewhere other than Steam or Origin, the stores they had to be activated on. TheFlyingGerbil
First off, I only but new games, but since I have such a gigantic pile of games to play through, I generally wait for them to drop to around" £20 I'll think about it" and "£10 to £15 I will buy". Even at this price I've seen games go down by £10 before I've got around to playing them up playing it. Wouldn't like it if I ended playing them when they're £30 less than I paid! The only games I pay more for are Nintendo games as they tend to only drop in price very gradually, and never get to the low prices of other developers. Even then I've never paid RRP, as they're easy enough to get at £5 or more off at launch. so usually around £25-£30 and will often get them at launch as the prices actually seem to go up for them after the stores have finished battling for the day one sales. deanb
My "buying games for £40" days have been over for a while. I just can't really afford it any more and given how little I can pay for my games when I go looking it just makes the £40 price point seem horrendously high. Last full-price game I bought was Skyrim, and that was in a sale for £22. It's why I object to stuff like day one DLC, cos it makes an already pricey purchase even more expensive. I've been using Love Film since August, £5 a month for 2 titles, not bad. I play MP on PC, and I don't care for trophies so I can play the SP and then move on to the next title. I got Uncharted 3 in January, cost's £20 atm. I played it for a tenth of that. Then on the PC side of things you've got bi-annual steam sales, almost constant stream of indie bundles, it's easy to get titles for cheap. I can get so much gaming for so cheap on PC I think next-gen I'll probably skip on, at least for several years, I see no need to get into the action right away. Most expensive gaming purchase would be... I don't know. I don't think I've ever spent over £40. I do have a few limited editions, but they're through pre-ordering rather than spending extra. Strangelove
I hate to dump on things that I dont partake in, but how has the PC community accepted 60 dollar games? From what I remember, the myth is that games were usually cheaper on pc compared to consoles because of the cost of building pcs or something like that. How did we get to the point where people are ok with shelling out more for certain games than others? I mean, if PS3 games tomorrow went up to 70 bucks, id shit myself. Id be upset. If they do it next gen though? Ill be upset, but Ill understand.
deanb
There's a fair few that aren't okay with it. And there's also a fair few moving on from consoles who for them Diablo III or what not being $60 is no different to the prices they paid on consoles. Also there's not "myth". The prices of PC games are/were reduced because there's no license fees to be paying. Further compounded recently with most games being digital so no logistics costs either of shipping, stocking, paying sales staff, the percentage set aside for returns etc and always having as many copies as you need (or less occasionally, but it's rare CD-keys run out). While some titles like COD n such hit the $60 section many on the other end of the spectrum are a fair bit less. For example comapred to DIII for $60 you can get 4 copies for TII for $60 too. TheMightyEthan
Yeah, a few games are $60, but most are $40 or $50. I know I'm significantly less likely to buy a game if it's $60.
