It's really about both sides. Good read.
excel_excel
Great read. Couldn't have asked for a better point where Dent links to a kickstarter he feels is risky.. http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/policewarfare/police-warfare?ref=category Cancelled! Still that means at the end of the day no money was charged. Edited April 23, 2012 by excel_excel
TheMightyEthan
http://penny-arcade.com/patv/episode/crowdfunding Last week's Extra Credits, not about Kickstarter specifically but crowdfunding generally, but I figure it's close enough for this thread. Waldorf and Statler
So to summarize the video: this is great for the video game industry. And even if a funding fails, which chances are one will inevitably fail when they're too ambitious, we still need to look at the overwhelming positive. excel_excel
That'll happen again no doubt. What'll be worse is when gaming websites don't check the thing properly and post about it. its a good thing the money is never charged till its the kickstarted is over. How do you guys feel about Yogventures? So the Yogscast guys are getting Winterkewl Games, an indie studio to develop it....it seems to me though, this is easily the kind of project that could easily just go over budget or just fall through due to bad planning or whatever. This came up on a TGS podcast a while back, and while I think a licensed game based on the Yogscast is a neat idea, "Yogventures" is just a terrible name for a game. It's probably only a game that they'll market to their fans anyway, but if you show someone who has no idea who the Yogscast are, "Yogventues" isn't exactly going to grab someone and bring them in. deanb
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/438955692/pcgamingwiki-an-encyclopedia-of-pc-game-fixes I mentioned about this one on Twitter. $60K is a lot to ask for hosting of a Wiki. One that already exists, and has normal donations, and is crowd sourced (a fair few of the original posts were even done by yours truly until I clicked the intention wasn't to make a "PC Gaming Wiki" but a "Fixes for PC games wiki". I guess one of them had a more attractive name). I think he's essentially asking for enough to fund his life for a fair while, which is against the rules of Kickstarter. Cos no way in hell are his server costs in the $60K range. Also he's from London, which also causes issues since afaik you need to be in the US to start a kickstarter (Which has always been one of the looming flaws. It was to avoid the fact some companies have issues with crowdfunding start ups)

My initial thought before clicking in was "$60k? That sounds like someone's salary" and sure enough, that's what it is.

I think he's essentially asking for enough to fund his life for a fair while, which is against the rules of Kickstarter. It is, as I've stated already, a wiki. It's crowd sourced knowledge. Yes ask for donations for servers, but asking for a salary cos you made a wiki is a bit much. It's not even good value for money. $60K for one man to make a bunch of posts, or $0 for several hundred folks to make tons more posts. Faiblesse Des Sens
He doesn't want a salary for himself, he wants to hire someone. Instead of the project taking a decade he wants it to take a year, and for the content to all be quality. In a way it's an interesting method to do a wiki. Wikis are meant to be crowd sourced, but in this case the funding for the content is crowd sourced. Either way, if you like the site, I see no reason to not support this. deanb
He doesn't want a salary for himself, he wants to hire someone. What will be delivered on project completion? Thousands of articles. I am an experienced, professional researcher and web content writer. High-quality articles will be produced regularly, with the aim of increasing the game article to over 2000, with more produced if the funding level goes over the goal. I'm pretty sure he's wanting that salary for himself. Also currently in the space of about two months the wiki has created 449 articles. By paying him he aims to quadruple the count over the next year. Except on the current rate it'll hit that amount before the years end without having to give him $60K. You also have the problem that one single person will not know everything. That's the point of a wiki being crowd sourced, you pull in the wisdom of the masses. TheMightyEthan
Yeah, the Kickstarter says they're not getting enough contributions to keep up with new releases let alone update pages on older games, but I think a large part of that is a lack of awareness of the site. As more people learn of the site's existence I imagine content creation will pick up.

Chewblaha
http://www.kickstart...rcade-sells-out Penny Arcade are doing a kick starter to replace thier advertising. I'm pretty sure that's not what KS is meant to be for. (apparently KS have okayed it, but given KS stand to make a pretty much guaranteed $15K of it they'd be insane to turn it down. Especially given PA would most likely tear them a new one if they did) This is just the worst.
Chewblaha
@Chewblaha - I remember when Kickstarter was the place to go if you wanted to help fund a cool iPhone case, or a Watch. Now we're seeing Podcasts funded using the service. Its a bit of a waste if you ask me. We're just seeing a bunch of people who haven't made something good in a while come out and ask for money. That's what it's all boiled down to.

I've never gone to Penny Arcade and thought 'wow that header ad sure is distracting'. This is just....what's the point of it? I've never in my life seen something so unneeded, especially on Kickstarter. This is just doing something just to do it. They made this comic last year. Pretty much sums up there kickstarter. deanb
http://www.kickstart.../defense-grid-2 - Ooh. If I had the cash it'd probably be my first Kickstarter. Kind of a shame that Defense Grid 2 is one of the..stretch(right word?) rewards, cos I don't much care for the expansion pack that could come from it. edit: hehe, with regards to Penny Arcade Kickstarter: https://twitter.com/BenKuchera/status/222983676005330944 https://twitter.com/Thiefofhearts/status/222984078314582016
Johnny
I'm not sure why people are upset about the penny arcade kickstarter. If people are willing to pay penny arcade money to remove the ads, then that's fine by me. I'm not incredibly inconvenienced by them myself, though.
