Enervation
I wonder if there's a day/night cycle. Would make ambushing in forests quite interesting.
deanb
Well AC:R(and maybe previous ones, but memory is foggy there) had Day/Night cycles so I'd assume so for ACIII.
Enervation
I haven't played any of the AC games since 2, so I wouldn't know. Â I was just wondering if the day/night cycle will actually affect visibility and whatnot. I'd really like to try to sneak through an entire Redcoat camp without being noticed, as a challenge. TCP
AC2, ACB, and ACR all had day/night cycles (and maybe AC1? I didn't play that far). Though, basically, the sky got a little grayer, and that was it. Huge mobs of people still wandered the streets all night, and I don't remember it ever letting you move more stealthily. SomTervo
Yeah, how it worked was that the game had a Day/Night cycle, but whenever you did a mission, in the ancestors memory that mission was at a specific time of day and weather, so if you started a mission which was set at a different time of day from what you're at currently, the sun would whip around (or down) immediately, which was cool as shit, so the scene would fit how it originally happened. Â EDIT: I guess if they keep it the same for III (which they probably will because it's a good system), you would get that quality of reduced visibility etc. when you're free roaming, but in actual missions the developers will have control over how the visibility will be affected. TCP
It's really hard to do night correctly. Especially if you're in the forest, I'd love to see it get REALLY dark. Maybe force you to use your eagle vision?
TheFlyingGerbil
God, I hope not. I hated walking around with eagle vision on you could see absolutely bugger all. I could only imagine myself getting stuck in literally every tree between me and my objective if that's the case.
TCP
Maybe, but in AC2 - ACR, I didn't really see the point of night time, it barely got darker at all. If video games want to do night, then make it dark so it'll change the way you play.
TheFlyingGerbil
I think the only reason for the day/night cycle was the changing of the guards wasn't it? I know if the chief of the borgia tower escaped you;d have to wait until they changed over at sun up/down to try again. You were also supposed to time your attacks for the change-overs but i could never be bothered with that.
SomTervo
I think Dragon's Dogma is going to do the visibility stuff best. Looks fucking unreal darkwise. Becomes an actual survival horror game... Â Re: Assassin's Creed III, the series is an action adventure series primarily; stealth and atmosphere are very much secondary. I think when it's night it'll mostly mean different AI and world behaviour. Not anything to do with visibility. The fact that it's colder will probably make more difference, especially in the game's winter modes. Â Oh yeah, what does everyone think of the summer/ winter paradigm? I think that's awesome. deanb
Kind of a shame they're still pussyfooting around the whole "why the fuck are you just killing red coats?" topic. Also I love assassinating people with galleys and cannons, and stealthily galloping across a battlefield to take out my targets before they know I'm there. Faiblesse Des Sens
I'm guessing you didn't watch Ubisoft's conference?
deanb
No I totally missed that conference, which is totally why I didn't reference it ¬_¬
madbassman39
What you posted Dean has me thinking of two things. Â 1) As an American, I would love to have seen the game where the Americans were the bad guys. There is a lot of things that would help support this, such as Conner being Native American, disliking those that are stealing their land, and the part where the founding fathers were Freemason's, which has ties to the Templars. Â 2) That naval battle makes me wish we actually got that really bad ass looking Pirates of the Caribbean game that was cancelled a few years ago. deanb
Some of that stealthy galloping I referenced.
Faiblesse Des Sens
Yes. but after that they showed gameplay that was nothing like it. It's CGI to begin with which never matters for gameplay. Also, during the conference, they responded to the issue of Redcoats as enemies.
deanb
Yes they were asked about the whole Red Coats as enemies thing. And yes they responded. They responded to it with "The Templars are enemies". Not really answering the question. One might say they're... pussyfooting around the whole "why the fuck are you just killing red coats?" topic. Though they did go on to further expand upon this to say that you'll be fighting both two legged and four legged enemies. Templar wolves obviously. Â And the video:
TheMightyEthan
@FDS: No, they still pussyfooted. All they said in response to that question was "the enemies, as always, are the Templars." Â Though one thing that had me thinking was that since it covers 30 years total, with time after the Revolution, there weren't just a whole lot of redcoats hanging around afterward... Strangelove
I thought they stated a while ago that there were Templars on both sides, not just the British. Â And don't forget Templar yeti.
TheMightyEthan
No tower defense in AC3. Woot!
deanb
Yeah, seems naval combat is likely replacing that. Â I didn't really expect it, that's from the old AC2 engine, and AC3 was started on since AC2 not since Brotherhood, so older ideas most likely won't have been incorporated. Maritan
http://kotaku.com/59...assassins-creed Yeah, fucking kotaku, but still... It's kinda sad that developers do such things and then try to explain them on such level. Edited June 15, 2012 by Maritan
Faiblesse Des Sens
Could be a case of marketing vs what's actually in the game though. Â As one of the commenters point out: It's very possible that you just kill one American general at some point and that's basically it.
TheMightyEthan
I'm reasonably convinced it's a marketing decision and inclined to believe the devs when they say it's not representative of the game. Â I did notice in the E3 demo that while Connor was fighting Redcoats, when he was talking to that American officer the officer was like "yay, help us take out these British" and Connor was basically like "fuck you, I only care about the Templar."
