deanb
Website: http://0x10c.com/ Developer: Markus "Notch" Persson (of Mojang) Genre: Space MMO So, Notch's new game. Looks pretty interesting. I doubt it'll be a minecraft "killer" or do anything near its sales, but I've a feeling it'll have its hardcore fans. The on-board computer looks like it could be great (i.e from a sort of EVE-like black market of apps and viruses people will sell), or terrible (adding a huge usability wall for those that don't know assembly). It's also possibly going to have a subscription, which these days is a huge gamble. http://0x10co.de/ - emulator for the in-game PC if you want a spin. And some screens: (open in a new tab and change the number for the image to see more, this is currently the latest)
Mister Jack
0x10c is a fucking terrible name. I sure hope that's a working title.
deanb
Keep in mind the "original" name was http://marseffect.net/. At least 0x10c isn't something a search engine will have trouble with like that "Love" MMO.
TheMightyEthan
281,474,976,712,644-281,474,977,000,000 does not equal 1988, it equals -287,356. 16^12 doesn't equal 281,474,977,000,000 either, it equals 281,474,976,710,656. However, conveniently, 281,474,976,712,644-281,474,976,710,656 DOES equal 1988. I think what happened is that whoever made that graphic did 16^12 in Google rather than a real calculator program, which gives you 2.81474977 × 10^14 as the answer, which when converted to standard notation gives you 281,474,977,000,000. It's a rounding error that they didn't bother to check, and so when they carried that number through the rest of the calculations it made their equations wrong. I mean, think about it, 281,474,977,000,000 is BIGGER than 281,474,976,712,644 (they're the same right up until the 977/976, and I'm pretty sure 7 is bigger than 6), so subtracting it out of 281,474,976,712,644 couldn't ever give you anything other than a negative number. *Edit* - Okay, that's super nit-picky. Blame it on my engineering background, I can't just assume someone's math is correct unless it's MUCH higher level than arithmetic. deanb
I wasn't much up for checking the maths, it was just the first image/post I found explaining the name as I heard it explained the other week.
Mister Jack
I didn't say there was no reason for it. I just said it's a bad name.
TheMightyEthan
I like it, actually. How as everybody been pronouncing it? I've been reading it as "oh ex ten see".
Johnny
I've been pronouncing it as "Notch's new game with the stupid title", myself.
Waldorf and Statler
A game can be highly damaged if it's hard to remember the name from the top of your head and you have no fucking clue how to pronounce it. Notch could've called it something and then use the above as a subtitle. I would prefer "Asstastic booty Man Walrus: 0x10c" that way everybody has an easier time in remembering the name
deanb
Zero Ecks Ten See. I'd say the name being quirky makes it memorable. Though for the most part just being notches game is enough to remember the game by.
fuchikoma
I haven't been pronouncing it because while I know several people who took computer science courses in college, I don't know anyone who would be excited to program an imaginary 16-bit CPU in ASM... Though it seems I've even been misreading it too, because since no one has been writing it as 0x10^c, I've been seeing it as 0x10c... which is equal to 268 in decimal. Until now, I've never even seen an exponent in hexidecimal. The name is pretty bad... For a runner up, who would know that "Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy" has "Duodecim" in it? It's like it was named specifically to make FF an even more exclusive niche so you couldn't even read the title without being a fan.
Mal
I just remember it by the last two words... 10c. It is a really od title but I guess its fine...
Thursday Next
So... why not just call it "1988"?
TheMightyEthan
Or 281,474,976,710,656.
deanb
afaik you can't TM a number. Also 1988 would be a PITA to search for and 281..blah blah a pain to remember.
TheMightyEthan
Yeah, that was a joke.
Thursday Next
1. You can absolutely TM a number. http://www.ipo.gov.uk/domestic?domesticnum=2424871E 2. If you can google 1984 and come up with a book with relative ease. Finding the game called 1988 is not going to be a stretch.
Johnny
1984 is also one of the most famous books there is, which tends to make it easier for Google to find what you're looking for. Something like Notch's new game is much more obscure in comparison.
Thursday Next
Ok. But the video game XIII is not hard to find either. You type in 13 game and the first hit is the Wikipedia entry for the game XIII. Hard to google is not in my opinion, a good reason for not calling it 1988. However. "Being clever.", "Making the name something people talk about.", "Being deliberately mysterious." or "Trying not be mainstream" are all fine. Personally, "zero times ten to the power C" is hard for me to remember. If I googled it there is every chance I will google Ocx10 Or 010X because the collection of characters is too abstract.
