Popular Post CorgiShinobi
I'd watch a feature length film of this in a heartbeat!
Mal
And saw some short gameplay. I didn't realized that Link now have expendable swords and spears that can break. You can easily pick up more but it's almost lootshooter like. And breakable weapons. Inventory management might be a thing now for a Zelda game? Ugh. Neat looking game however. FMW
Nintendo is reeealy struggling with keeping this frame rate up to 30. If the most recent rumors are to be believed (and Eurogamer has been pretty spot on lately) then we're still a full six months from this game being released. And I know that frame rate optimization normally comes in at the end of development. Data streaming for draw distance, load times, etc. But man, I don't remember other Nintendo games looking this choppy pre release. And a spotty frame rate is hardly a deal breaker, but it's still kinda weird to see that in a AAA Nintendo trailer. By the time they were showing us Mario Kart 8 or Pikmin 3 or Zelda Skyward Sword they were smooth as butter.
TheFlyingGerbil
That's a gameplay video in a new area - what do you think of the combat? At least it looks like you can carry plenty of food to replenish your energy, and you get to eat in peace.
FMW
Combat has taken a SIGNIFICANT step towards Dark Souls. Basic attack inputs that vary in utility based on weapon type? Check. Stamina meter governing action? Check. Parry and riposte is now perfect dodge and attack flurry. Looks like the hit boxes on everything are really precise too, which Dark Souls brought back to popularity after the imprecision of PS2 era hack and slash (DMC/God of War were all about big cool attacks hitting everything, not so much precise hit detection to models). I basically see this as a good thing. Dark Souls has dope combat. I hope there's something else though. It would be sad if Zelda turned out to just be Dark Souls for babies. Mr. GOH!
Don't worry; it will also be Skyrim for babies.

Mal
Relevant bit at 6 minutes with real time gameplay from the Switch. The surprising thing was the frame rate. It's steady docked and mobile. Perhaps they patched it or maybe the area they are in is not too power hungry.
TheFlyingGerbil
I wish I wasn't at work so I could watch that. I'm guessing it's not too revealing about the switch though
TheMightyEthan
The surprising thing was the frame rate. It's steady docked and mobile. Perhaps they patched it or maybe the area they are in is not too power hungry. This is the first time we've ever seen actual Switch gameplay of anything, period. The trailer they released before was all "simulated" pre-rendered videos of the games. People thinking it showed a lower framerate on the mobile mode were just overanalysing and being crazy. Mal
Nintendo wasn't loud and clear on that fact. Even then why have promo videos show uneven frame rates when the Switch can play it just fine? It needlessly makes them look bad.
TCP
I still can't get over how good this trailer is:
TheMightyEthan
I can't stand Zelda's voice. I wish they hadn't decided to go with voiced dialog.
TCP
I think it's fine, better than the over the top screaming in the Japanese version.
Saturnine Tenshi
But Zelda's crying. You guys should all be offended and boycott Nintendo.
TCP
Yeah I mean, it's sort of bullshit that once again, a female character is portrayed by being overly emotional. Good on NOA for toning that down. Japan is gonna Japan, I guess.
TheMightyEthan
What are you guys talking about?
CorgiShinobi
I dunno, just voice acting is always very dramatic. Maybe people are confusing it for Zelda being helpless, but frankly a lot of Japanese media takes emotion up to 11. Screaming, crying, laughing, whatever else. I just want to be Linku and fight with Zeldaru!
TCP
I got real nerdy tonight and watched some YouTube videos on Breath of the Wild theories, basically saying that Link from Breath of the Wild is Ocarina of Time Link, specifically from the third timeline where "the hero was defeated". From the trailers, we know there's some sort of flashbacks and Link's been frozen for 100 years. The theory is, Hyrule falls, Link gets badly beaten and/or killed, but Zelda and/or the sages through save Link and freeze him, then imprison Ganon/dorf, hence the imprisoning wars referenced in A Link to the Past. I don't know if that's true or not, but the nerds have found somewhat convincing stuff from the trailers. I usually don't really care about the timelines besides the direct references in Twilight Princess and Wind Waker, but playing as OoT Link is exciting, if for no other reason than nostalgia. FMW
But Zelda's crying. You guys should all be offended and boycott Nintendo. I won't lie, this trailer set off some warning klaxons as far as the depiction of Zelda. We have her falling into Links arms in tears, we have her partially clothed in a bath, and we have her voice over describing how she has failed to do something. Because Zelda actually getting shit done? Nah. She's gotta fail so that her man Link can fix things. THAT SAID anyone passing judgement of the game based on how a single NPC is depicted is clearly not interested in the actual game. And anyone passing judgement on how a single NPC is depicted based on a few shots cut out of context in a trailer is clearly not interested in appreciating the actual story as told in the game and is looking for a reason to be upset on the internet. The game is more than Princess Zelda, and Princess Zelda is more than what was shown in the trailer. We've only got like 6 weeks until the game is out and people can judge the shit out of it. Just hold your horses folks.
Thursday Next
Agree with FMW, while some of it could be problematic, you really need context to tell if Zelda is just a Damsel in Distress, or a character in her own right. TheMightyEthan
Based on the fact that both Koroks and Ritos appear in BotW I'd assume that means it follows the Wind Waker timeline. I don't even have to do a bunch of super nerdy research to figure that out.

I don't even have to do a bunch of super nerdy research to figure that out. Except you're ignoring a huge portion of the evidence. First, there's Zoras too. There's bridges that are straight out of Twilight Princess Hyrule, and we know there wasn't a Link between end of OoT (adult timeline) and beginning of Wind Waker, that's why the land got flooded. Now look at the Master Sword, it's in the exact same location as it is in A Link to the Past. Look at the flowers: A Link to the Past:
TheMightyEthan
I was thinking it was /after/ Wind Waker, after the land has been drained again, not between Oot and WW. Bridges from TP could be there no matter the timeline because it's all the same Hyrule anyway.
