fuchikoma
There's a half-hour look at it over at Giant Bomb.
Toshi
Is this actually any good? I kinda wanted some opinions before dropping any money on it
Mister Jack
Well there is a demo on both PS3 and 360, but here's what I'll say: The fighting mechanics are very solid and there are some good systems in place like a ratio based tag team mechanic and an anti-infinite loop break. As for the game as a package, right now there are 8 characters, each with their own story mode. A little low, admittedly, especially for 3v3 matches, but they intend to add more characters as DLC. On top of that, the ending to story mode heavily implies more content for it down the line. Their stance on it at the moment seems to be that they'll keep adding content as long as the game is successful enough. The online was lag-free when I used it. So the short version is that yes, it's good. It might seem light on content right now compared to some other fighters, but it only costs 15 dollars and they'll be expanding on it in the future. Toshi
I'll go try the demo out, didn't know there was one. Price wise, I dunno if I can justify $15 on a game of only 8 fighters right now, and idk how much a new fighter via dlc is going to cost exactly. Could be pricey. Johnny
Like Mister Jack said, there's some neat things to this one and it's generally well-crafted. However, I feel like it's a slower Marvel with less characters and less insane crazy stuff. As much as I want to like it, it just comes back to that: It doesn't (from what I've seen) do deep, interesting fighting nearly as well as BlazBlue, and it doesn't do the completely crazy insane speed of Marvel. It just ends up lacking anything to hook me. I'm glad it has a decent tutorial though. More fighting games need this kind of shit.
Mister Jack
I've been following news about this game recently. After being laid off from their original studio, the team behind this game set up a new studio to continue work on the pc version and dlc, but couldn't get funding, so they turned to crowdsourcing. Their goal was originally to raise 150k to fund one DLC character, which they ended up meeting in just one day out of a thirty day fundraiser. So they made a stretch goal of a second dlc character if they raised 375k, which they have, and a story mode for him if they reach 400k, which they did. Their current goal, as of the time of this post, is 600k for a third dlc character. Here's the link for the page. I don't imagine anyone on here likes the game enough to donate to it, but they have lots of new art and characters and stuff to look at so it's still worth checking out http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/keep-skullgirls-growing On top of that, some may remember the Friendship is Magic fanmade fighting game that was sadly shut down by copyright lawyers when it was about 90% finished. Regardless of your feelings about MLP, the fact remains that the game was incredibly polished for a fan game and an unquestionably legitimate fighter in its own right. Rather than quit entirely, though, the team behind that game decided they'd just try to make an original game instead. So how does this relate to Skullgirls? Well, if the Skullgirls team raises 725k, they'll provide a license to the Fighting is Magic team to use their Skullgirls game engine so they can make a new game, which I think is really cool. I didn't really post this to try to get people to donate (I already did). I just think it's a nice story about indie success, not to mention indie devs helping out other indie devs. With all the stories about EA and corporate greed and whatnot going around recently, it's encouraging to see developers who are motivated by their own love of the game, and even gaming in general. Those Skullgirls characters will be free DLC, by the way. At least for the first few weeks after they come out.
Mister Jack
The campaign has ended with a total of 829,829 dollars. That's enough to fund the following: - Squigly dlc with stage and story - Big Band dlc with stage and story - Mystery dlc with stage and story - Engine license for Mane 6 - Robo Fortune dlc with stage and story - 2nd Mystery dlc - 8 novelty announcer voice packs It's a good day for crowd funding.
