Mal
On the long run, there has to be faster speeds and higher/no caps with larger and larger file sizes. No doubt about that but yeah, what Ethan and FDS said. Its easy as hell for PC folks.
danielpholt
I've been downloading games via Steam all week. Its certainly easier than it would be to get the bus into town and back, probably cheaper too. I've got an unlimited download cap, the only downside is that my speeds aren't great. I'm usually running at around 2mbps, so in order to download a game i'll have to leave it on overnight. Its not ideal, but when i move house in a few months, a top rate download speed will be one of the things i'm looking for in a new rented house. Faiblesse Des Sens
They're games though: You can just play one while another downloads. Throw a couple on your HDD and you're golden. Beat one, start downloading another.
TheMightyEthan
Yeah, though Steam makes that slightly inconvenient in that every time you launch a game it pauses all downloads, so you then have to alt-tab out to restart them. Not a big deal though, just slightly odd.
fuchikoma
Probably does it so it doesn't mess up realtime online games.
deanb
All steam games list if they're SP or MP though. So wouldn't be hard for Steam to figure out if you're running a SP-only game and continue working. Maybe it'll be fixed when new distribution system fully kicks in. fuchikoma
That's funny... Well, I've already gone on record how I feel about Steam anyway - the full rant is around here somewhere. I stick to PC games that don't require online authentication to run. I'll let consoles get away with it, but that's because there's no real alternative and the games will only be around for about 10 years tops anyway. MasterDex
It could also be to avoid problems with disk writing. Some games aren't affected at all but some games will suffer from stuttering if there's a lot of data being written to the same drive, even more so if it's writing in the same sector or cluster. TheMightyEthan
Normally I hate online authentication, but Steam is so unobtrusive that I don't mind it at all. You hear that devs? This is how you do DRM.
