Damn, the new episode of Samurai Jack started a bit slow, but the entire package was excellent.

Bonding with his wolf buddy helped him reawaken the badass within. Jack just says, "Well, if they want to die, I can't help it." He does offer to let them live their life, but you know that won't happen. They were devoid of basic human emotion as evidenced by the two deer. Not to mention they couldn't care about avenging the first fallen Daughter. There are people who think the prominent Daughter, Ashi, will survive and have a larger role in the remaining episodes.

I dunno because the other two Daughters fell too. Albeit one looked like she might have gotten a broken neck from Jack's punch. I imagine the one who was tossed landed elsewhere from Jack and Ashi and it was certain death for her. Sure Ashi is different to the others in comparison, but I don't know how they would redeem her character with 7 episodes left. Of course, the wolf from the last episode survived and had a role in this episode.

So much for weekly killing. Jack took them all out. Ashi will probably be redeemed. It seems in line with how I am viewing Aku and his human follows (Daughters of Aku). Aku is evil but last episode was him being plain old Aku. So far the Daughters of Aku are pulling far greater evils just from the fact they're sentient and human. Also being human allows for the act of redemption. Ashi got some good in her despite her upbringing.

So I'm abusing my access to free magazines through my library and flicking through old back issues and come across an article mentioning the 2nd series of Voltron will be coming out in January 2017...and I'm like "but that's three months ago I guess it didn't hit that release date cos no one has mentioned it". Turns out it did and just no one has mentioned it. So that's added to my "to watch" queue, but after Standalone Complex.

I like Rick and Morty, but Saturday night is for my Samurai Jack!

Also, doesn't it feel like we're back to Square One with Rick and Morty after tonight's episode?

With the exception of Jerry, it feels like everyone has reverted back to their initial character traits. On one hand, it's more opportunity for crazy shenanigans. On the other, it makes some of the characters one-dimensional. Beth is back to being dependent on her father's presence and affection, and Morty still struggles with how to feel about Rick. It might be putting too much thought into the show, as it is primarily comedy, but Rick seems to be a merry-go-round of pain and distrust. When characters want him, they end up doubting why they want him in the first place.

Spoiler

I dunno, Jerry being gone is a bit of a big change. Morty actively shot Rick which was a bit unthinkable at the start, and Beth used to be quite distant with Rick but clearly showed that she's pretty close to him. We've also got a potential arc to explore with Ricks leaving of Beth and his wife (which tbh hasn't been brought up so far) as well as Tammy, who could be a decent adversary (a long with Evil Morty who has yet to crop back up).

Eh, it was brought up in Season 1 early on.

Jerry brought up Rick's commitment problems a few times when arguing with Beth. Actually, he was the only character to ever address it when Rick was winning over the family. Unless there's really an interesting story behind it, for the most part the show has been sailing on by with the concept of Rick being self-centered and fabricating his past on a whim. I mean, even if we get a backstory, this episode showed us Rick can easily bend the truth. It's kinda like the Joker from The Dark Knight with all his stories about his scars.

Because it's on Prime and was only 6 episodes, so not some huge commitment, I watched Into the Badlands.

First of all, I will say that I'm a sucker for most martial arts things (except Iron Fist, which is so poorly done) but the cheesy premise kinda drew me in too.

It's set in a sort of post-apocalyptic feudal society (ding ding on your popular tropes!) where guns are... outlawed? I dunno how multiple "barons" hold power yet they keep people from having guns. Anyway, it means that people learn martial arts instead. The story begins with the main protagonist who's the chief "Clipper" (enforcer) for one of the barons and he discovers some kid that another baron was trying to get hold of and who happens to have an intriguing pendant with a symbol that matches something from his mysterious childhood. Supposedly, it's the key to finding a way out of that hellhole and discovering this paradise city of Azra.

Thing is, this kid also has some weird power inside him that activates whenever he sees his own blood. His eyes go black and he can fucking murderise everyone around with ease. Also, it turns out the "Clipper" has a secret lover who is pregnant, which could spell trouble

It's actually a decent watch because while it's somewhat hokey, it feels true to its martial arts film style of storytelling while also providing a decent set of characters with their own motives and proper conflicts. There's an erratic baron who's dying, a woman who wants to end the feudal patriarchy, a conflicted girl who's unsure of her "mother". And it's got a funky production style with these big, old American houses with poppy fields and old American trucks. Also, there are hot chicks.

That was an interesting, funny and surprisingly cute episode of Samurai Jack. Jack is going to be (PTSD) Jack and Ashi will be (murderous) Ashi. Ashi will somehow pull a Zuko in 5-6 episodes. She won't be as endearing as Zuko who has multi-season worth of development but it should be good because Ashi is cute. CUTE!

Next week, more Aku and bagpipes.

We've been needing bagpipes.

I'm suspecting that...

Jack may die in defeating the current Aku. Ashi will be the one to go back to the past and finish past Aku. Something along those lines because I'm starting to think that Jack himself is a portal to the past, like a space-time anchor. With all the portals destroyed, he hasn't aged and it's perhaps a side effect of Aku's magic that brought him into the future; not the other portals. If he should die, perhaps it would create a portal to the moment he was flung into the future.

Regarding Samurai Jack

Spoiler

I don't think Ashi is going to be the one to kill Aku.  That would be incredibly unsatisfying after four seasons and over 10 years of building up this final showdown between Jack and Aku.  This is Jack's fight.  Ashi can assist him in some way, but in order for this to work for me the final battle needs to be just Jack and Aku.  This is between the two of them and it always has been.  Ashi, I feel, has a more personal stake with the Daughters of Aku, and her personal arc could be dismantling that cult herself, with her own "final boss" being her own mother.  That would work just fine for me.

I've finished the second series of Voltron. Pretty fun, and a lot "faster" than the first series, though part of that I guess is down to the sort of T1000-esque "constantly being hunted and on the run" element of it for much of this series. There's a plot element introduced regarding one of the paladins which I'm a bit "err, what" about, but helps bring in some tension I guess.

Kieth being part-Galra through his mother somehow.

Onwards to other tele shows.
