TV Show Discussion

I don't know much about Cloak & Dagger other than some brief stuff in the Civil War comics but that trailer's not really selling it to me.

And the Marvel shows haven't exactly been great as of late...

Sooooo, I finished watching Iron Fist. I probably shouldn't have expected much from the guy behind the later seasons of Dexter but, my god, what a mess of a show.

First of all, Danny himself is such a crap character. He's not really someone I'm familiar with in the comics but I don't recall him being such a dullard. The first few episodes is him not realising how weird he comes across and then he just makes stupid decisions all the way through. You're not really given a reason to care too much about what's going on because it's never exactly contextualised that well. I also think the way they portray his power is really simplistic and, well, plain crap.

And the action is nearly all terrible. For something you expect to have a load of martial arts, it's worse than Daredevil. And that's also because, they never fucking show you any K'un Lun stuff. Like, maybe they just couldn't spare the budget? Daredevil gives you all the important parts of his past (moreso in the second season, I guess?). You barely get anything here besides some stories.

So, the whole show just ambles along with a sort of twist towards the end, although, perhaps the most surprising is where the Meacham characters wind up (I'd say it's a nice touch if half of it weren't so dumb).

People keep using the word "bittersweet," but honestly if we never found out the nature of the ending beforehand, I don't think people would be using that word.

The first half of the episode is great with only a few minor issues. Hardly anything to balk at overall.

It's the final moments of the episode that unintentionally trip over itself. Because of the limited time and approach, viewers are feeling more so hurt than satisfied.

I strongly feel that Ashi should have faded away after Aku's defeat. It would have been poetic that once Aku's tower fell, Ashi herself would fall too. Rather than just saying, "I felt him leave me," we get the line from the wedding. Frankly, the wedding was an emotional sucker punch, but for those of us who have seen Gurren Lagann, we were in shock before Ashi even fell. For those select individuals, it was hard to appreciate the moment.

The very final moment is actually fine as it is, but because of the wedding tragedy beforehand, I feel viewers are missing out on the bigger picture behind the symbolism. Jack isn't just moving on, people are literally "not seeing the forest for the trees." The forest and all of its beauty is preserved because of Jack completing his quest. While he may have lost people he helped and cared for, he has ultimately secured the future.

It's just, again, it's hard to realize this in the moment and within such a small time frame with no dialogue.

I finished the first series of Hap & Leonard, which first had me intrigued because of its setting and cast.

It's really good and definitely feels like a book, in the best possible way. It starts off fairly breezy before escalating into something quite tense and violent. It has interesting characters and a strong central relationship between the two of them.

Twin Peaks is excellent weirdness, if you enjoyed the original series you'll enjoy this. I'm enjoying AG too. Ian McShane is great as Wednesday. Only downside is the continuing obsession with these big dramas of showing nude women (and it is almost always women) when it is wholly unnecessary.

I don't need to see boobs flopping everywhere to get that people are having sex. I don't need a woman to be standing around naked counting money to get that she is a sex worker who has just concluded her business. It's not prudishness, it's just boredom with the crassness of it all.

The only thing it achieves is that my gf will a) Not watch these shows with me and/or b) Get very pissy with me for watching them.

American Gods does have male nudity, specifically the well-endowed Djinn and his gay sex scene. I think Laura has been the only one nude and iirc only post-death so not much titillating on a woman held together with large stitches. Oh I guess Bilquis, but that's kind of her thing, might as well cut out completely if not having her with sex scenes (and at least she's not a prostitute in the show).

Given many American shows have a pretty low-bar on violence I think nudity is their main bar for being "this is adult".

The nudity in American Gods is pretty even-handed, although I've only seen the first three episodes. Bilquis's scenes are sexy, which befits a god of sex and desire. But I get it; you and your gf are uptight Brits. ;)

My wife and I watch it with another female friend of ours, and they both enjoy the show quite a bit, and both of them are quite sensitive to male gaze-y nudity, a la earlier seasons of Game of Thrones. My wife gets annoyed at prudish sex scenes in TV and movies, although not as much as she does at portrayals of women made purely to titillate straight men.

We've also been watching season three of Fargo and season three of Better Call Saul, which are both pretty great. Oh, and we've been watching The Handmaid's Tale on Hulu as well, which is pretty depressing, though very well done.

We have a few more shows on our watchlist, like the recent season of House of Cards.

Anyone watching Preacher now S2 has started up?

It's funny how S1 felt a lot like an extended prologue, but did it all so much better than Westworld. Now the characters are "on the road" and I'm interested to see where it's headed. It's still got the over the top gore and black humour that sets it apart from everything else I'm watching.
