Yay! or "Neigh" I guess.

In other news just wrapped up the recent series of Preacher. Dang it keeps getting better. It did feel that it stretched out a bit at times to focus on Angelville but damn I don't care cos some of the direction n cinematography was pretty damn fine. It's getting much more confident in itself and its strangeness.

This his Netflix the other day. Has some of the folks involved from TLA/TLoK which immediately gives it some strong appeal. The animation style throws me a bit, looks kinda like Ni No Kuni a bit. I'm curious if it'll have some of the strong world building and characters of TLA/TloK and maybe might be a worth Eragon adaptation.

Anybody watch the new season of Bojack Horseman yet?  Man, this show just keeps defying my expectations.  The only thing I saw coming was

Spoiler

Diane and Mr Peanutbutter's divorce.  Even then I expected it to be dragged out over the season, not dealt with at the very beginning.

I finished it the other week. It's good as usual, though this one i felt didn't bring as much new to the table and mainly hammered home some of the previous series issues. The "Forgiveys" was a hell of a thing though. I try n get folks at work to watch it, but even several series in it's still seen by some as "show with the horse and cat people". Like it's only a step up from kiddy type shows.

Hmm. Not super sure on this one. The comic book series was an interesting-ish concept that kind of devolved into just over the top sex and violence. We've got Deadpool films to take the piss out of superhero tropes and we've got Preacher as a pretty great Ennis adaptation.

I binged the entire season of Netflix's The Haunting of Hill House this week-end. I loved everything made by Mike Flanagan that I've seen and I generally love ghost stories, so it seemed like it would be right up my alley and I wasn't disappointed. It starts out pretty good and only gets better right up until the middle two eps, which were absolutely fantastic. I found the second half of the season to be a little less compelling but not because of any kind of quality drop, it just went in a different direction than I was hoping. I wanted all the spooks and instead the show decided to give me all the feels.

The horror is ultimately more of a backdrop for the character drama, which is the real focus of the show. I still strongly recommend it, though. It's the best haunted house story I've seen in quite a while. I can't think of anything else remotely as good other than the Conjuring movies (the two main ones, not those shitty looking spin-offs that I'll never watch).

Just watched season 2 of Castlevania. Unfortunately, it's hard to talk about without spoiling it so I'll just say I liked it and it's an improvement over season one, but Trevor and Co. take a backseat for a few episodes to focus on Dracula, Hector, and Isaac, which may not please everyone.

I finally got around to watching season 2 of Castlevania. Improved on the first season for sure. There's also a lot of buildup with pretty much what MJ talked about above with a few episodes focusing on Dracula and company.

Spoiler

I have money on Dracula being not quite dead like in the games. Alucard probably going to find something interesting like how the Belmonts killing Dracula before.

inb4 Dracula comes back (with a version of "Die monster, you don't belong to this world!" speech) and absolutely destroys Camilla.

Also the rendition of Bloody Tears was not bad.

that was one of the most disappointing films I recall watching after seeing memess, previous work of the people involved etc. so I don;t know how excited to get for this.

eta: Missed an opportunity to recommend Toast of London which stars Matt Berry not just as a side character as he often is. and he doesn't wear thin in it as you may worry?

So I've been following this for a bit. So far, map is suggesting the Prime series could take place during the Second Age at the time of the creation of the Rings though some other things suggest the Third Age.

It'll be interesting either way to see how Amazon takes this. I believe it will have to be like fan-fiction similar to the Shadow of Mordor games but hopefully it'll be better.

Looks interesting, and I'd imagine many of us have spent many an hour in fictional Chernobyl over the years so likely some interest there. And Sean Harris always a great pick.

It's sort of such an open secret on how much of a horrific disaster this was, and still remains to be. I remember my gran hosting some girls from Chernobyl when I was younger, though just thinking of it more as a 'foreign exchange' trip than being aware of the events that caused them to briefly be part of our lives. It's something I have a somewhat morbid fascination of.

Wasn't aware was Karl Urban. Which is sort of a double edged sword for me. I kinda like Karl Urban, but you're not really meant to like Billy. He's kind of a definition of an absolute bastard. (but similar to Preacher they might rejig things around for the show).

It amuses me that Hugh isn't played by Simon Pegg.

If you haven't watched Chernobyl yet, I highly suggest it. It's not so much about the day but the process of dealing with the disaster. The first episode or two just boils my blood by the sheer arrogant and ignorance. By the third I was numb. Just follow the narrative.

We finished it a few days ago. How did you feel after the end of the show?

Obviously there's no way around the fact that Dyatlov and (to a lesser extent?) his superiors acted incredible naively on that night, but I almost find myself feeling sorry for them. They had absolutely no idea the get out of jail free card had been taken off the table. Does that excuse the events that lead to them having to push the button in the first place? absolutely not....but there's no way they'd have gone down that road had the ramifications been told to them beforehand.

Anyway.

I'm working my way through Catch-22. I've not heard great things about the show, but its decent enough so far. Also it's got this man in, and I'll watch pretty much anything with Kyle 'Clear Eyes, Full Hearts, Can't Lose' Chandler in it.

That's part of the cost of lies. The RBMK reactions (as operated pre-Chernobyl) are safe as ruled by the powers that be... even if it isn't. The kind of belief/thinking is what led to the disaster. Okay sure, I can cut Dyatlov some slack but he is part of the same shitty power structure and have performed the test in a highly unsafe manner. Dyatlov was repeatedly told of how unsafe the test was by the men he ultimately killed. Yes, I would still hold him accountable even if AZ-5 could work as intended. The AZ-5 button or function could have malfunctioned and then what? Again deny the presence of graphite all over the ground and a hole in the goddamned reactor's roof that is clearly in front of your eyes? The type of person Dyatlov just pisses me off.

What also pisses me off is the Soviet power structure that was heavily condemn in the show. I always had a distaste for it but to have it brought before my eyes in such a way was maddening. Bunch of yes men and jack offs. To be sure, Legasov was also part of it in ways and he was a diehard believer up till the disaster. At least he has the courage to admit wrong but it also broke him. It's probably what ultimately led him to suicide. (As an aside, Legasov's... decline reminds me of my own grandfather. True believer in the Chinese Communist Party who was then disillusioned and broken till his final days... which may have included a suicide attempt or two. Or maybe it was a stroke that made him a vegetable. Who knows?)

Ah man, the show was a ride for sure. Brought up so many emotions and thoughts (considering that I am a scientist at heart and my political/ideological beliefs). 10/10, would recommend. Game of Thrones Season 8 better not take any awards away from Chernobly.  It would be a robbery.

I could see Thrones going home with a few technical, production or acting awards, but the story side of the show should be left to rot.

Not sure this year they'll get much on the technical front, especially with the Battle of Winterfell being pretty much entirely in the dark. Compared to some of the shots of past (Battle of the Bastards being a biggy) they've not quite hit some of the high points.

But a lot of awards shows are politics and GoT might still score well within the industry, especially when up against Netflix shows and all that "evil" of non-cable networks.

I can see The Bells doing well on a technical level; it looked absolutely amazing, even if none of the character stuff made much sense to anyone with even a passing understanding of the characters.

This could be goooodd. Shame the actual book is a little bit....weirdly religious towards the end with like a war against heaven n shit. Pretty much look like it's done tbh, the trailer shows the whole span of the first book so I guess mainly waiting on prime christmas show viewing.

I think Americans get it on HBO, not sure if on the main channel or just their streaming thingy.

This is getting some good buzz, meant to be a direct sequel to the film which is interesting. Also it totally has the squids in it. Not 100% it's needed, but cool to see some more non-mainstream comic book shows coming up, but this and The Boys might hit similarish tones n kinda force each other out.

Odd to see though given at the moment DC are working the Watchmen mythos into the entire fabric of the DC comics (like Manhattan is controlling shit, forcing superman to exist in all realities n what not, fucking with time hence..well fucked up time in comics).
