deanb
UK currently has (depending how you measure it) - BBC iPlayer (free) - ITV Hub (free) - 4 On Demand (free) - Netflix (subbed) - Amazon Prime (subbed/PAYG) - NowTV (subbed/PAYG) - All the weird things like Mubi, Curzon, Rakuten etc. The first three are streaming versions of the main TV channels though so you can always watch them normally (and there's plans to roll them into a singular Freeview streaming service). NowTV is owned by Sky so basically a streaming rather than satellite version of their offering. Bonus is where you guys have stuff like CBS All Access and HBO Go it means it ends up on some random service over here. So like I think Discovery and Picard are both on CBS over in states, but over here one is Netflix and the other on Amazon, so there's not even consistent deals. Same with likes of Good Omens and Dark Materials, both BBC co-productions but one on Amazon and the other on HBO Go. HBO I'd guess being the better partner given Good Omens won't be hitting BBC even over here until Xmas cos of the exclusivity thing with Amazon. I think I've mentioned it before but pretty much your go to is here: https://www.justwatch.com/
deanb
I've heavily binged The Boys and wrapped it up in about a day. Gotta say really quite liked it. Much like Preacher they've taken the core plot & characters then made their own thing with it. A big departure being The Boys themselves aren't powered. The Boys comic I've read in full but felt overall it was a bit...naf, and relied way too much on shock. This actually has fleshed out quite a few of the characters and made them a huge bag of loveable/scary/terrifying/amusing assholes. The plot deviations mean that even as a comic reader I'm left wondering where they're planning on going. Another change, mainly down to the comic being 10-15 years old, is they've jettisoned the 9/11 backstory(ish) and the Bush stand-in. Also Simon Pegg as Hughs dad is cool. This scene for me pretty much sums up the humour and fucked-up nature of the show and its characters The Deep is all kinds of messed up. Remember when we all dreamed of cutting the cord and getting away from spending more money than we'd like to admit on content we didn't want on a platform we didn't enjoy using? Well, Big Media heard and this is what we've got. I've got a Spotify subscription for my Music. I've got a two gaming subscriptions (not including PSN/Nintendo Online). I've got Netflix. I've got Prime for fast shipping/movies? and I'm looking forward to adding Disney+ in the future. At this point its probably costing me more money than It would have just to continue paying whoever owns the cable box under my TV.
TheMightyEthan
We only have Netflix. As stuff comes off of there it's not actually driving me to sub to other services, it's just driving me back toward piracy.
Mal
Amazon Prime, is well, for Prime which I still use a lot. I always see the streaming service as an extra (though the Lord of the Rings show might be really compelling). I also have HBO Now (only got Jamie Oliver and maybe Westworld to hold me on... Plus my niece is watching Sesame Street) and Netflix (my bother pays for it). I have no intention of adding more services. I rather sail the high seas but I probably won't even bother... I got enough to watch, play or whatever. I'll do without.

Gabe Newell was spot on years ago when he said piracy is a service problem. I'm not subbing to multiple streaming services, especially not those that only exist for a single company's content. Right now I have Spotify for music, Crunchyroll for anime and Netflix for everything else. If whatever I want to watch isn't on one of those then I'll usually find a torrent or watch something else entirely. I recently discovered Shudder and I'm kinda tempted to cancel Netflix and just sub to that, though. Their library is more limited but the horror focus means it's much more relevant to my interests. It also helps that it's only like half the price. I feel like Netflix is a tad overpriced since the last price hike, especially considering how unreliable they are about keeping content on the service. Mister Jack
I might actually sub to Disney+ when it comes out since they seem pretty dedicated to making original content and it's cheaper than Netflix, but right now I'm taking the wait and see approach. No interest in any of the others.
MetalCaveman
Started watching The Boys, it sure is... Something. Also watched the first season of Project Blue Book. Best season of the X-Files in a while. Show's pretty fun, it has some pacing issues and any kind of "historical accuracy" gets thrown out the window early on but still, if you enjoy series like the X-Files and stuff like that it's worth a watch. Don't know how they'll handle season 2 though. Spoiler I assume Truman will now support them? Also what's the deal with the obelisk thingy, and where is that going to go, I swear if they pull a "it was all a dream!" thing again I'm setting an alien on fire. Considering some of the massive egos in television cooking he's certainly the king prick of the bunch. Funny he's back in news again once again aiming for his 'man of the people' type shtick claiming his restaurants failed cos they weren't "posh" and not cos they were stupidly expensive for simple pasta. 13 hours ago, MetalCaveman said: Started watching The Boys, it sure is... Something. How far you in, enjoying it? With the discussion above on services it's a shame that Amazon is getting a few new services cos their service/platform is dire. They run adverts on much of the episodes and finding shows, especially stuff that's included with Prime Video and not a standalone rental/purchase, can be a hit or miss affair. So for example might see Akira, think "ooh", and nope it's a rent/buy situation.

Mister Jack
Started watching Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance on Netflix. I'm not that far yet but so far I'm loving it. The original movie, while beautiful and visionary, was a bit clunky in the narrative department with bland protagonists and a few too many scenes where not much happens. I still have a fondness for it though simply because it was so creative and ambitious. Jim Henson really put his heart and soul into that film, even if it didn't come out quite perfectly. This new show, at least so far, is superior to the movie in every way. I know that technology has advanced since the original movie but I have to point out just how good it looks. The puppetry, set design, and even the carefully controlled use of CG all come together to make a truly beautiful and magical fantasy world that feels like it's really alive. The main characters have much more personality than Jen and Kira did, too. It's much easier to care about them and their journey. Even if you're not a fan of the original I would recommend that everybody check this show out just because there's really nothing else like it on television right now. Watching it is making me wish that puppets and animatronics could come back to Hollywood movies again because there's such a different feeling between looking at a CGI creature and looking at a practical effect that's actually there. Edit: Just finished the season finale. This is definitely going to go down as one of the all-time great fantasy tv shows. It's quite possibly the best one I've ever seen personally. I am having trouble thinking of another one I've seen that I thought was better. Edited September 4, 2019 by Mister Jack
Mister Jack
Final season. I'm glad, actually. Originally the creator said he was going to keep the show going for as long as he had ideas for it, but that always sets off a red flag in my head. The last season went in such a way that I feel like the best thing to do is to wind things down and give it a good ending rather than dragging it out for the sake of it. Mal
It's be neat to actually spend more time in the Upside Down and for sure outside of Hawkins (doubt it be too much about Russia). Ideally this be setting up for a final season 5. A season 6 would feel like it be dragging it out too much, especially after the more focused season 3 (which, after some reflection, made it a better season than 2).
TheMightyEthan
Season 3 was so much better than Season 2. Season 2 dragged hard.
Mister Jack
Bone is getting a Netflix show! I am ecstatic about this. Bone is probably my favorite graphic novel series of all time but it's struggled to ever get a proper adaptation for close to 30 years now. They tried to make a movie but the executives wanted to "kiddify" it and fill it with pop stars and other garbage so that never happened. Telltale made the first two volumes into games then never continued. Now it seems like it's finally going to get the adaptation it deserves. Mal
We'll see if it is any good. The source material is fine and as expected of GRRM. I personally haven't gotten around to it because I am waiting for the cold embrace of the winds of winter... so I may dream of spring. Something I may only have access to the day I meet the one true god. I am still a bitter man regarding the later GoT seasons but... I'll hold on to some hope. deanb
Anyone watching His Dark Materials? (is it out in the US? I know it's a BBC show over here). Pretty good so far, though "gobblers" when said out loud by serious actors seems very silly. (and because UK has such a small acting base it seems, most of the head gypsies are GoT actors :P). It's definitely a case where most books are better adapted into TV shows than films, given this has allowed it to breath a lot more than the film had, given one episode into these would be half the film. And the film didn't have the end of the book, which I suspect this show will given.
Mal
So I added PBS Passport to my streaming options since I frequently watch PBS programs from my TV antenna. All the NOVA, Nature and all the others shows that's on PBS I want. Seriously, it's a treasure trove.
