SomTervo
I've discovered Mystery Science Theatre 3000. That's my next several hundred hours of free time gone
CorgiShinobi
Lately I've been watching animated TV shows I either missed out on or didn't think were worth watching (at first). Green Lantern: The Animated Series was very good and focused on the only thing that I've cared about in Green Lantern. All the different groups and the powers of the Emotional Spectrum. It entertained me and none of the characters annoyed me. The relationship stuff got a bit heavy handed near the end, but it was still fine. Young Justice Season 1 I've finished on Netflix and I've ordered the Season 2 Blu-ray off Amazon. Again, never gave it much thought, but even with some odd moments, it's actually as good as the praise thrown at it. Well, as far as I've seen and with its cancellation I know Season 2 will unfortunately leave a thing or two unfinished. Last, I watched Over the Garden Wall. I got bored one night and saw a video about it on YouTube. The commercials that aired before on TV made it seem like some whimsical ol' timey Adventure Time, which didn't appeal to me. It's far more than that and has more character and story than Adventure Time has had in years. Well worth owning in HD for $10. deanb
I've being watching the Flash. Housemate had it on a few times n seemed good so I caught up over xmas. Main drive for me was familiar faces from Prison Break and Clancy Brown. The arc of "who is reverse flash?" is a nice mystery, as well as who is Wells. My only main criticism is it's quite "monster of the week", but it's some major characters they're laying the foundations for.
CorgiShinobi
Forgot to post that I finished Season 2 of Young Justice a few days ago. I marathon'd through it because the series most certainly grew on me. Shame it and similar shows were thrown out the 83rd floor's window in favor of focusing on a handful of comedy animations. I remember a few years ago catching a few episodes and being turned off by newer team members, but I never got to properly see the whole team interact so now I grew to like most characters. Impulse was a bit difficult though as he was played up as the ADHD future kid with no other dimension than that one. Truth being he was rather serious, if not jaded about what has happened in the future. I guess I could go into spoiler territory, though I'm not sure who here has watched the whole series: At least Impulse had the BFF angle with Blue Beetle, our potential world conqueror alongside The Reach. I can always appreciate animated takes on the modern Blue Beetle, like back with Batman Brave and the Bold. It was interesting to see DC go into what honestly could be considered "mutant gene" territory that Marvel is accustomed to in X-Men and so on. When "Meta-Earthling" is being thrown around at first, you don't know exactly what's being implied. Truth be told having heroes without superpowers being referred to as "Meta" didn't make it easy to realize it was referring to superpowers. In fairness most everyone was grouped up so it was more a case of generality and was intentionally made to be vague at first Wally (Kid Flash) dying was so left field and happened so... casually? Like, he gets zapped by offshoot energy from the doomsday device and begins fading out from the physical world. "Oh man, Artemis is totally going to kill me" and along with another comment he's gone. Artemis gets her own end of the world and Bart (Impulse) becomes the new Kid Flash. Admittedly, this is a rare moment as we see Bart without his hyperactive act. We end with Savage greeting Darksied and something is afoot. Too bad it's the end, so I guess Savage just wanted to show off his recently acquired used Warworld ride. All in all, I got a strong Justice League ('00 era) and Justice League Unlimited vibe from the show. That's a great thing and if this series had continued further we could have seen it become a classic.
deanb
Started watching Orange is the New Black. It's pretty good, especially as I started watching it err maybe Saturday...maybe Sunday. I think Sunday. And yeah, on Episode 10 already. Quite a good character show with some neat arcs in-between. I'd say only major issue, though I guess one most prison shows have, is that pretty much all the convicted felons are generally good. Pretty much worst people there are some of the guards.
TheMightyEthan
As somebody who deals with felons on a regular basis, they really do seem just like normal people in moment-to-moment interactions, even the ones serving 40 to life for premeditated murder.
Eleven
Well, you'll see what kind of person they are in Season 2 more. I already forgot about Season 1, if there was backstory on the other felons. I think it was all Piper. But season 2 might address your concern. ... I started watching Friends. It hasn't been a week yet, and I'm at season 5 already. I love this show. Now I remember why I liked it so much as a kid. If you had asked me what my favorite comedy show was a week ago, I'd have said Scrubs or Arrested Development. Right now though I feel like it's Friends. Also, I love 30 minute shows. I could binge on it endlessly. I get tired binge-watching 1 hour shows, as I feel like the time commitment (45 minutes per episode) is too much. With 30 minutes shows (22 mins really), the episode is over before you get bored. And then you'll feel like watching another one.
staySICK
my wife's been watching Friends. I think it's utterly stupid.
TheMightyEthan
I lost interest about two or three episodes in to OitNB Season 2. Can't say why, specifically, it just didn't grab me.
Eleven
Maybe because of the change to focus on the other characters? You should try watching it again. Some of them really have interesting stories. I liked Lorna's the most.
TheMightyEthan
I think it was mostly how mean the plot was being to Piper. Just irritated me.
SomTervo
That aspect gets more even-handed in season 2. The end of season 1 is pretty rough from that angle, though. I never thought I'd do this, but I'm watching an anime which I think is probably good enough to recommend here. Here's my post from the anime thread: Started watching PsychoPass as a 'passive' watch (stuff I'll watch while wolfing dinner or somesuch, mainly to fill background in my empty flat while girlfriend is away) It's actually really good. Not the most entertaining, but probably the most intelligent anime I've ever watched. Unusual characters (for anime). Very little female objectification/typecasting. A very long form story, with 'monster of the week' aspects which are tied together into an intelligent whole. It's a big mystery sci-fi plot in an Orwellian future, with well developed themes and good plotting. The bad guys remind me very much of Ledger's Joker - which is a massive, massive compliment. TheMightyEthan
It was the beginning of Season 2, not the end of Season 1, that made me feel like that. *Edit* - The final straw was the whole thing with Alex getting her to testify to all this stuff and then getting herself released. SomTervo
That's actually what I was referring to, minor spoiler it surprisingly doesn't come to too much after that. Just contrived drama to make it seem like the plot is being pushed somewhere. I remember being majorly bummed/pissed off at that point, too
Mr. GOH!
Season 2 of OitNB has lots of problems, but I enjoyed it. I like it when the show is mean to Piper. She's a rat bastard and Taylor Schilling is the worst part of the show. The biggest problems I has were about certain characters acting, erm, out of character, and some of the zanier plot resolutions. Then again, Jenji Kohan joints tend to steadily get zanier and zanier. Cf. Weeds.
TheFlyingGerbil
Wahoo, Happy Endings is coming back this Winter! It always seems to be hanging on by a thread. It's such a funny show I don't understand what makes something successful and something else stuggle - e.g. I don't think I've met anyone that thinks 2 Broke girls is funny but it seems to keep returning regardless. deanb
Wrapped up Orange is the New Black. That ending is something. As Iv'e remarked on Twitter I like how light hearted it can be (despite some of the topics covered), then just in an instant being all "oh yeah, criminals". I'm interested to see how Series 3 will pan out. From what I understood she's 8 months into a 16 month sentence so far, which could get extended though the book it's based on she's in for a year so dunno. Morello was cool, liked the twist to her issues.Caputo is my favourite character though, you get the sense that like Heeley he just wants the best for the girls, but is quite put upon by the various incidents around the prison. Especially pretty much everything that got lumped on him at the end of series 2.Piper I think it's kind of okay to see her slide out of the shows focus, she's a good introductory character; privileged background, not exactly hardened criminal type. She's the viewers "in" to the show. Now we're in series 2 you don't need as much focus on her, we're fairly familiar with many of the characters now.

That damn show keeps coming back, and so does New Girl. Holy crap, I can rant on about how bad New Girl is. And, one update to my viewing post from a few months back. Constantine has become one of my favorites. It took a while to find a groove. And I'm hooked. Though I am looking forward to seeing the season ending, this could also be the series finale. Rumor is that it may move to SyFy with a name change to Hellblazer (oh, yeah!). SyFy is NBC owned, so they seem to like the show enough to keep it around, despite the ratings. Eleven
LOL @ TFG. Happy Endings was horrible. Few shows make me actively decide "this is horrible" instead of just stop watching because it's not interesting enough. 2 Broke Girls is fine. I like it. New Girl is stupid though. Started out ok, but the characters quickly devolved into stupid around maybe 4 episodes in. Maybe they improved? I happen to like that effeminate guy who can't get laid but the lead girl is just so annoying I couldn't watch it anymore. That's where I stand on these sitcoms!
TheFlyingGerbil
So you're to blame... How much of Happy Endings did you watch? Apparently most people hated it at first but warmed to it by the end of the first season. Even the critics admitted they were wrong about it and that takes some doing for a critic to admit that! I would like new girl if they'd just stop shouting. It's literally 90% of the dialogue. I actually find if quite stressful to watch because of that. Not sure which one you think is effeminate though? Eleven
I'm sorry! Hmm... I admit yeah, I stopped watching early, only about 3-4 episodes. Maybe I'll try watching it again. I actually assumed that it only had 1 season and had been cancelled. And I was talking about Schmidt in New Girl. I think effeminate is not the right word, maybe "a bit too sensitive"? That's how he came across to me. But yeah, I liked him the most.

Shit, is it totally worth following through with S02? Also, I only know people who like Happy Endings and I personally love New Girl. It has some genuinely classic episodes in seasons 2-3, almost up there with best-grade Arrested Development and Community Hilarious and true about the shouting though, Gerb Edited February 11, 2015 by kenshi_ryden
deanb
I quite enjoyed it, especially for the pay-off at the end. The tribal warfare politics stuff throughout can get a bit grinding down, and there's a few times where it struggles with the ensemble cast, so some only pop up for a moment, but other than that pretty good build up of the characters. Mr. GOH!
If it has a laugh track and has had new episodes since 2004, it's a stupid TV show. Though a show isn't good by virtue of lacking a laugh track; New Girl is utterly unfunny shit.
