deanb
Doc Martin is fun. Weird to see Martin Clunes in a slightly more series role after Men Behaving Badly, though I'd seen him in A Is For Acid before then which is pretty disturbing (even more so as it's based on true story) Anywho, BBC are making His Dark Materials for TV: http://www.radiotimes.com/news/2015-11-03/philip-pullmans-fantasy-series-his-dark-materials-is-being-adapted-for-bbc1 Also BBC now have a digital store. https://store.bbc.com Dunno if Americans can access it (I know they carry on banging on about having international access to iPlayer with a paid-for model) Edited November 5, 2015 by TheMightyEthan fixed link
TCP
Everyone here watching Master of None? It's a really great, relatable show. Some of the acting isn't great, but the rest of the show's so great it more than makes up for that.
TheMightyEthan
I should be. I keep seeing a commercial for it where he's talking to the old lady. "Well now the tables are turned" cracks me the fuck up every time.
Hot Heart
Too many TV shows to watch. I started watching The 100, thanks to this article and a Prime membership. I can see it has some potential, despite its YA trappings. I always liked the concept of BSG and some of the dilemmas but the mystical bullshit dragged it waaaaay down. My friend says it doesn't improve after 5 episodes or so, which is concerning because he'll watch any old crap if it has hot chicks in it... I also watched the first episode of Jessica Jones. Could be good, and I'm reassured now those quips and stuff aren't all in a poorly-edited trailer now. I'm interested to see how it pans out over so many episodes. I'm also noticing a parallel to Daredevil's setup Coming to the aid of an "innocent" murderer/victim but not in a bad way or anything. Eleven
The 100, it's currently what I'm watching, but I'm getting tired of the kids be portrayed to be better than adults. Sure it works in smaller settings, but that will NEVER happen if the entire human race is at stake. I can't take it seriously. I liked the first season, but I'm really annoyed with the direction season 2 went. The story is fine. The character's roles, I'm not ok with. Mr. GOH!
Fargo is the absolute best show on television at the moment, in case anyone was wondering.
Eleven
I finished watching The 100. It's an ok show, anyway, I just wanna say (super spoilers including season 2 ending) For a CW show I never expected that last episode to be so dark. Wow, I guess I should have seen it coming given that killing whole groups of people is a recurring theme in this show. First, killing off people to extend oxygen in the ark. Then the main premise, sending 100 kids to their deaths (again, for buying more time/oxygen to save themselves). Then the first battle with the grounders, with tons of casualties. Then the massacre in the village (then they killed off the viewer favorite). Then killing off an entire "race" of human beings. All of this to save their own people. They held back on showing the dead kids though. I guess they have the draw the line somewhere. But yeah, they killed everyone including the children. Damn. Anywho, now I appreciate show more given that twist in the season 2 ending. I'm excited to see season 3, although I still think I'm a bit annoyed with how it seems that children are the one running the show. And how useless adults are. I mean, Abby, in season 2, finally becomes Chancellor. She's (arguably) the one sane person that can make things better, but she never does anything significant. Everything she does is overruled by her child. And then she's relegated to simply being a hostage in the end. I do like that they aren't dragging things out to extend the plot. In season 1 and 2 they have clearly defined "objectives" and they complete these arcs satisfactorily IMO within the season, then introducing a new challenge in the next. The set up for season 3 so far looks intriguing. So I'll continue watching the show. Hopefully they keep this pace up and keep things interesting. TCP
Caught up on the final episode of Downton Abbey last night, omg so many tears. Manly tears, but tears none the less. I would have ended the show with a flash forward to the 1940s or later with George as an adult. Maybe as Downton is being sold, or something. I also thought it could have used a death. I mean, with all the tragic deaths it seems like a missed opportunity, and slightly out of character, not to kill off Robert, or Carson, or heck, even Violet. While it didn't make a big splash, it did resolve all the storylines, so that was good. Here's hoping for a spin off, sequel, or prequel. Ohhh how about a spinoff featuring Matthew, Sybil, and William as ghosts, doing ghost stuff. TheFlyingGerbil
I wouldn't have minded a second spoiler and did indeed expect it too but that first spoiler would have been depressing not sad which wouldn't be the right tone, I don't think. I enjoyed it overall and maybe would have liked a bit more drama but it's as much as I could have expected/hoped for realistically. Did you ever see Gosford Park? It's a film by the same writer if you like downton you should like that.
TCP
No! But I will put it on my list! Yeah you're probably right, my idea would have been a bad idea, I'm thinking more for the lulz. Imagine seeing Mary's bratty teenage granddaughter in the 1980s, in Downton. Wait no, that's terrible.
deanb
How about a future spin-off where Downton Abbey is collapsing and all the money in the aristocracy is gone so the grand children are having to scrounge up new ideas to keep the place going and heated. There's a place near my dads where they've opened up the gardens, got in some nice trails and such, falconry display, etc. Pretty huge kid park too. Do themed activities on a rotating basis (so stuff for Rugby World Cup, Halloween, Easter egg hunt etc). Really nice couple run it. They'll be out n about doing groundskeeper stuff, chat with the kids n such making sure they enjoy it. http://www.thorpperrow.com/ I think a lot of stately homes ended up as miniature museums, tea rooms, etc.

TheMightyEthan
I wonder how historically accurate that's going to be.

Mal
I finished up the first season of Marco Polo. Like prequels, historical fiction is mired in that some events are predetermined since they did happen. Spoilers: Marco Polo and Kublai Khan will live. Maybe in real life not in the exact way in the show or even historical records but they did happen. Even the stuff that seems improbable or silly which I think may give the show some of the bad ratings. Despite the above and some acting/directing problems, the show is entertaining. All the sets and costumes are fantastic. It's fun to see how well the producers and director work with what they have to pull off some some shots (e.g., crowds, expansive spaces). I'm totally fine that everybody somehow knows how to fight. I like questioning if the people in the show is based on somebody real. I guess the only other complaint is how this shows blows HBO nudity out of the water. You sometimes questions if it is all necessary but at the same time I am questioning if I am just being too prudish. Like of course the Khan of Khans will have a Halls of Five Desires! Of course there is some badassery of a naked woman taking out three armed soldiers! Blah, if you want some fun historical fiction, you got it right here. TheMightyEthan
imo the problem with prequels isn't that you know where you're going to end up, it's that because you have to end up at a certain place you can't let that place be determined by what makes sense for the characters you've created. Historical fiction doesn't have that problem because it's based on real people who were really acting without foreknowledge, so even though we now know where it's going to end up it's not like the writers forced themselves into that position. Hot Heart
Watched all of Making a Murderer after everyone was raving about it. It seems a little one-sided... except, boy, does it all add up. It's a weird documentary where the "good guys" are defence lawyers, the "bad guys" are cops, and characters you initially disliked (Ken Kratz) become ones... you strongly hate. An absolute fucking mess that undermines the whole justice system.
Eleven
You have failed this city. I'm so late in this but I wonder if the writers were aiming for that line to be a meme. So I started watching Arrow (11 episodes in) since The Flash was really good. Always planned on watching this but never really got around to it. Heard good things though and so far its been enjoyable. Well, not that last episode where he suddenly becomes a sissy. Anyhoo, while watching The Flash I kind of got annoyed at Iris so I looked it up. Popular opinion is that she was a bit annoying, but not as bad as Laurel. So here I am watching Arrow and feel like there's something I'm not seeing. I kind of like Laurel so far. She's not really important, yet I guess, but she's pretty consistent and I'm actually interested in her scenes. Should I be bracing myself for her inevitable turn into being annoying? Or did I miss it? I guess it's too early to tell but everytime I see her now I keep thinking she'll fuck up majorly and that will be the reason for the Laurel hate. But she hasn't yet. Cool show anyway. Edited January 17, 2016 by Eleven
TCP
Ok so, Arrow season 1 is pretty good, Laurel is mostly fine and I actually found Thea to be the most annoying. Then you get into Arrow season 2, which is awesome, but Laurel goes through some things which instead of turning her into a better person, makes her the worst fucking person imaginable. She's better by season 3, which is also the worst season of the show. The show is currently in season 4 and it's pretty good again. Also, both Arrow and The Flash are shot in my hometown of Vancouver BC! So keep an eye out for shooting locations to be recycled in both shows like anytime you see a trainstation. Eleven
Oh cool. I was warned about Season 3, but I feel like I'll be fine with it. I have a high level of tolerance for shows I like. So both shows are shot in Vancouver? Cool. I have to ask: Is there a real Big Belly Burger joint?

Hot Heart
I've started watching Mr. Robot. Not sure what to make of it so far, since I'm only a couple of episodes in. Some of the writing's a little clunky. Really hope it's not going the "modern day Fight Club/American Psycho" route. For some reason, the Amazon version has some weird censoring. The first time he says "Fuck society" it mutes the swearing (although, I figured in retrospect maybe that was intentional because of fsociety) but then every other "fuck" was fine and then I swear he's talking about "choice between two shitty options" and it silences the "itty" part. It's kinda distracting now, because I'm expecting some awkward muting at certain bits.
TheMightyEthan
I was just looking into that show earlier today, and what I saw said the web version had weird censoring issues, but that the bluray is completely uncensored.
