deanb
While I liked some of the casting of the film, the books are much better suited to a TV show.
Mr. GOH!
Patrick Warburton is Snicket? Huh. Did not expect that.
deanb
Someone at the BBC wanted some 4K cameras. Ethan will be happy.
Hot Heart
Anyone watching Westworld? I like the idea of what it's exploring (and Jonathan Nolan has previous AI-concerned work in Person of Interest) and it looks set to go to some interesting places. At first, I feared that it's going to be one of the shows where they're trying to hook you along with "mystery" rather than "story" but there are hints at involved character arcs for both human and "human" characters, and I care about where it's headed so there's that. deanb
I'm not watching it, but it's on my list to give a shot down the line.
Mal
Planet Earth II is airing now and the first episode is great. I never thought that snakes hunt in packs...
TheMightyEthan
Is it available for streaming anywhere?
Mal
BBC UK website. You'll need a VPN through a service or browser extension like Beebs on Chrome. I've heard that Beebs is sketchy though? Eh. If you want to wait, BBC America will air Planet Earth II in January. Not sure why since it's 2016 and this shouldn't be happening but maybe they're getting Oprah to narrate again...
TheFlyingGerbil
It was stunning as you'd expect, but I think I need a wuss edition without all the death and peril.
deanb
Yeah you would say that you half naked ape, what with your flimsy claws, crappy teeth, poor vision and sense of smell and the only survival mechanism you have is you can sweat while running a marathon. TCP
Y'all watching The Crown? It's pretty good. It's about this girl, Liz who becomes Queen. The Doctor plays her husband and John Lithgow does a great job playing my boy Winston Churchill.
Mal
Crushed all aired episodes of Westworld in one day. The concept of the park got to be one of the most depraved and hedonistic thing I've seen and it makes me wonder how the outside world operates. We get some hints which points to a dystopian world where the rich and powerful go to Westworld is get their rocks off. Then there are the Hosts. Advanced AI slaves that can potentially blur the line between man and machine. All good stuff.
deanb
It's on my watchlist, especially as podcast i follow has recently done a Westworld spoiler special so gotta catch up to Westworld before catching up on podcast btw if you're into Westworld maybe check out Humans. The second series started airing the other week. It's British so fairly short (10 episodes iirc). Takes a wee bit to get going n the family can suck at times (though it is mothered by Jen from IT Crowd) but the synths (or whatever they are, I forget the term used) are pretty great especially the errr...,.it's 9am so let's go with the word "woken ones". TCP
You know, as a big GoT fan, and a fan of westerns, I was really looking forward to Westworld. I just couldn't get into it. It was fine, and a better Sunday evening program than The Walking Dead, but I can't ever see myself getting as into it as I am with Thrones. Mal
My enjoyment of Game of Thrones was/is heavily influenced by me reading the books. Similar to TWD and the comics. With Westworld, I am free to imagine and hope for things to come. You could and should take apart most words and actions. Besides it's a sci-fi show that explores being human sentient (?) in a Western setting. Two of my favorites things. A lot of the mysteries were answered with some really odd ones left for season 2... which is coming in 2018. At least in the mean time I got season whatever of GoT, TWOW, season two of Stranger Things and some other stuff I must be missing on the TV show and books front. Hot Heart
I finished S1 of Westworld. On reflection... eh, it was good, I suppose. It feels too much like an Abrams or Nolan joint in that it sacrifices proper story and pacing for "ooh, twists". First of all, this was essentially a 10.5 hour prologue. Some of the strides taken during the finale feel too sudden or half-baked because they laboured the actual developments for too long. And then there's this serial issue of, I don't know a better word but... dissonance. It doesn't really explore its themes because it's too focused on making you pick apart the storytelling rather than the story. I don't care about anyone because we can't trust the storytelling either because it's flashbacks or memories or whatever. The hosts are sentient, etc. but we're focused on them getting lost in "dreams" and following their secret programming (until the very last moment). The most interesting stuff with William turned out to be "backstory" more than a serious exploration of the park's corrupting influence. I'm probably sounding harsher than I really feel but I was hoping for something more. I think there's a lot of cool things to discuss but I fear much will be about essentially shallow sleight-of-hand.
TCP
Once again HH sums up my feelings entirely.
TheMightyEthan
Yeah, I'm usually someone who doesn't have a hard time with twists, but this one rather than putting everything in a new light a lot of it just left me going "okay..." Mal
I should not use the Westworld subreddit or discuss it anywhere I suppose? I caught some stuff while discussion fill in the rest. Together it only let one real twist through for me (the finale).
Mr. GOH!
Yeah, the sub figured out 90% of the twists a long time ago. There's a twist in the last 15 minutes that may have been predicted, but I didn't see it anywhere.
TheMightyEthan
So I'm still wondering what happened to that one security dude who got jumped by the Indians? Nothing ever seemed to have come of that. And if they were just killing him off then why? It didn't seem like he was on to anything. Also, what is Anthony Hopkins hoping to accomplish by having the hosts kill everyone? He made it seem like he was trying to free them now that they were becoming conscious, but surely if they just kill everyone that's going to invite some kind of military response from the larger society in which the park exists. Hot Heart
The only hint with the security guard was that he suspected something when Bernard had completely "forgotten" his supposedly secret relationship with Theresa but that never went any further. I guess we'll find out what happened with Elsie and Stubbs (was that his name?) in S2 since they didn't show them being killed... I guess the Ghost Nation might become more significant since they were connected to "the maze" and their religion is connected to the actual behind-the-scenes stuff of the park (or that could all be a load of bullshit, knowing the nature of these types of show's mysteries) As for what Ford hoped to accomplish, I think it's somewhere along the lines of... hosts needed to suffer, to learn from humanity, to remember everything and how to "beat" them. Earlier in the series he said something about humanity slipping evolution's leash and that "this was it". I guess his hope is for the hosts to become "more" than humanity? I think Maeve was supposed to leave the park but then made her own decision to stay. I guess the "Journey into Night" narrative title has some significance also. I don't know. It might be fun to unpack it but I'm not confident it could live up to any theorising.
