Hot Heart
Summary of the first reveal stream for Rise of Iron. Yep, the Gjallarwing is a thing... *rushes off to pre-order*
Hot Heart
God, I hope whoever came up with the exotic sword questline got fired. In fact, I think pretty much all of the exotic weapon questlines are total bullshit. The only reason people did them before was because they wanted to complete a collection or get Thorn when it was an OP weapon. The sword quest is a fucking joke, especially before you could purchase all three different types and, therefore, had to repeat step 1 three times on three different characters. Here is how the questline breaks down once you've finished TTK's story, run around the dreadnaught to collect 25 hadium flakes, infused your new sword to over 280 light and unlocked all the perks: Step 1. Kill 50 Majors and 25 opponents in the Crucible. Killing 50 Majors (yellow health bar enemies) is no biggie but can just be a time-consuming endeavour. Killing 25 opponents in the Crucible, however, is a big ask because it is the worst weapon for PvP and requires picking up heavy ammo (spawns once or twice a game). The number of times you can simply miss grabbing the heavy ammo combined with the fact that if you get it, EVERYONE else is walking around with rocket launchers. Okay, so you can try and hide so you can wait it out until everyone's used up their heavy ammo (nice job supporting your team there, asshole) or just try and be sneaky and catch someone off-guard (good luck with that when there's a radar). And even if you catch someone without heavy ammo themselves, they could be just too far away that their primary weapon kills you in under 1.5 seconds or maybe they have a shotgun or a sticky grenade... Fortunately, there is Mayhem Rumble as a Crucible option where everyone's ability recharges (including supers) and the ammo spawns are mega fast. On top of that, heavy ammo is dropped by people when they die. It's a real mess of a game mode (probably more fun for people besides warlocks, since they don't have quick-killing, long-range supers) but you have way more chance of grabbing heavy ammo and finding a distracted opponent (since it's a free-for-all) And that's step 1. Step 2. Go find a guy on the Dreadnaught who can only be damaged by your sword. This one's a fairly simple step but it involves figuring out how to open a door on patrol since he's in a normally inaccessible area. If you didn't know what you were doing it would probably be frustrating. It involves killing three "Warden Knights" in quick succession so, basically, you have to whittle their health down then unleash a super (only one type will work for a warlock) to finish them off fast. Killing the guy is easy enough, assuming you have some heavy ammo already. Otherwise, you just have to kill some more mobs. Step 3. Bore yourself rigid. Okay, a more accurate description is "farm hundreds of planetary materials" while killing things with a type of ability. So for the void sword, you have to go down to Patrol on Mars and run around collecting relic iron from the nodes only (chests won't count). You need to collect 10 of a special material that might pop up when you collect some relic iron but seems like it works on a 1/20 frequency. So, yeah, you'll need to go and visit around 200 fucking relic iron spots. And the ability kills thing is time-consuming as well since you need 500 in PvE or 100 in PvP. I'd hate to have been a hunter trying to get a void sword. Step 4. Wait Yep, wait. On the one day of a week known as "Armsday" (Wednesday) when the gunsmith's stuff resets, you receive the final part of the questline. Step 5. Do a super hard version of a strike (probably no longer strictly "super" hard thanks to light level increases) where there are level 42 enemies and a special condition on the last boss. As well as the boss there will be three tough knights running around, each with a different type of shield. You need to leave the one that matches your sword's element until last. Then you need to make sure you can kill him and then the boss within 30 seconds of each other. I've actually done this before to help a friend and it's just a bit of a nuisance trying to make sure you don't fuck up and have to start the whole thing over. I'm sure other people have noticed how irritating the Chaperone, First Curse, etc. quests are as well.
Strangelove
I completely forgot how time consuming and repetitive that mission was. Now that I see it all spelled out it really is terrible.
deanb
Explain the 3 Defense items I just got from "Sterling Treasure" chests.
Hot Heart
Those are just cosmetic things where you can alter the chroma to give each piece a certain glow. Since infusion is now 1:1, it's easy to start using them if you want to. I just trash the pieces from the treasure boxes because you can still get the same ones as high light level drops from packages anyway. Hot Heart
Okay, so this is going to start off sounding like a #humblebrag, but I will explain... So, destinytracker.com has me ranked as Diamond I in Iron Banner. For anyone who doesn't know about ranks in online games, the tiers tend to go Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond with splits in each in ascending numerical order. So, essentially, the game is saying that I am in the top 1% of Destiny PvP players. However, I know this is a bit misleading. Firstly, I never really got into PvP until that bloody Thorn quest meant I had to get involved. With PvP in FPSs I'd only ever really gotten into Halo 3's before and I got alright at it, but then Reach completely changed the playstyle required and I suffered and just stuck to Firefight (Halo 4's PvP was better but my experience varied drastically between maps and I didn't have any friends to play with). After looking up some basic tips and just gradually gaining map experience, I've improved a great deal and now I've got a set up I'm mostly happy with while I can hold my own pretty well (MIDA is boss!). Still, I've only ever engaged in PvP as part of quests or most times Iron Banner rolls around. It started when I was always checking back on game stats to compare myself to my regular fireteam, then against the clan for a competition, and more recently I was seeing how much my stats would suffer while I went chasing sword kills for this exotic quest; they have dropped a point in k/d and a couple in k&a/d but fortunately I found a gametype that's best for getting sword kills (Mayhem Rumble). While I was doing this, however, I saw a new feature that the site had introduced that answered another frustration of mine. See, for a few months now, I'd been trying to figure out why I've been having a really rough experience when playing Iron Banner on my own compared to when I played with my cousin. I figured it might be a skill-based thing that should eventually balance itself out since most my games had been played with him and I didn't think I was that much better. Then there was the fact that always having someone by your side makes a huge difference, obviously. I also considered how I've lagged behind max light level since April now, and since I get a lot of "Narrow Escape" medals that difference in light level makes or breaks some encounters. Anyway, the site has started using Elo ratings which then gives some insight into how Destiny's matchmaking works with regards to getting very close teams. I know I saw somewhere that Bungie's overall aim was to give everyone a "win 1, lose 1" back and forth experience with regards to team games and I could see that showing up in my history to some extent where the average team Elo then shows the percentage chance of winning (it's usually something like 51/49) which tends to alternate. Thing is, even when I'm playing solo and getting absolutely slaughtered by people who are clearly far better killing machines than me, I'm doing enough for the team that we win far more often than not, so my win percentage overall is a bit over 58% in that playlist. The system essentially rewards you for defeating people with a higher Elo while punishing you for losing to lower, along with other stuff like a "kill & assists/death ratio" (mine is always at least 1.0) so even though I'm the team's punching bag, they still think I deserve to face tougher opponents. I think another contributing factor is that time that Iron Banner experimented with being Rift rather than Control or Clash, and I think my cousin and I won every. single. game. Even though it's meant to be an "objective-chasing" gametype everyone just keeps rushing the rift, you can hang back, get loads of kills and then while they're waiting to respawn you have a bit of time to walk the spark into their base or just score loads of points for capturing and carrying it more. tl;dr Destiny tracker is a really useful tool if you like to check out your PvP stats and the game has way overestimated my skill. p.s. wanted to share this daily crucible game. Normally, this is just where everyone shows up just to get their daily legendary marks and doesn't care about winning or losing... but I think two people quit after I got lucky at one point and wiped their whole team. Hot Heart
Some new details about Rise of Iron are starting to emerge. http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2016/08/02/destiny-artifacts-to-receive-dramatic-overhaul-4730.aspx I like the idea of having artifacts that can do funky things with your build. And a full infodump https://www.bungie.net/en/Forums/Post/210270781?sort=0&page=0 Edited August 2, 2016 by Hot Heart
Eleven
Isn't that what was supposed to be the function of artifacts in the rumors leading up to The Taken King? And then it just ended up being a stat boost.

TheMightyEthan
Poor Hot Heart, the only person who still cares about Destiny.
CorgiShinobi
I, uh, pre-ordered Rise of Iron last night. It's a little over a month away and to this day I feel as though Destiny has the best FPS shooting mechanics. This is coming from someone who has been playing Far Cry 4 recently and gets frustrated at the clunky shooting of NPCs. I may pop on a little before the expansion to get use to the game again, but there's hardly a reason to be playing Destiny right now. Sure Iron Banner and Trials of Osiris are still around, but why bother when the new content is going to make the current stuff passe.
TheMightyEthan
I agree the moment-to-moment gameplay feels amazing, it's the quasi-mmo structure that's turned me off. I feel like I have to invest so much time in it and I don't feel like I have the time to invest.
Hot Heart
I'm only playing at the moment because I'm finishing up my Moments of Triumph, but also trying to get better at PvP. Also, your current gear can be infused to the raised light levels, so you can still put work into a "build" or just give yourself more cosmetic options. Strangelove
Game updated today and you can get a new exotic side arm. Used 3 exotic special engrams and nothing.
Hot Heart
There's green engrams dropping all over the place once again, heh. They've changed the UI for the better, although it'll take me a while to get used to the moved bounties. And I lost my Iron Banner ones. Makes sense though, since they're going to change it so it's easier to rank up in IB and adjust the difficulties of the bounties. Personally, I found it hard to get 1st because I've improved my PvP skill drastically by playing cautiously... which the points system does not reward. And there have been games where my team has won comfortably but one person on the opposing team pipped me by 100 points. I've seen people getting higher than 335 boots and I think someone got some Mk. 44 Stand Asides with an ornament already applied but without the nodes showing. The weapon balance changes seem good so far for ARs. They dropped off a bunch after HoW but they're pretty good for PvE now as well. Doctrine of Passing can still get fucked. CorgiShinobi
I heard of items dropping higher, but at the same time nothing too high. I'm sure once you play through your first two story missions you'll have something higher.
Strangelove
I got some 336 Mk 44 boots. Im a warlock though.
CorgiShinobi
Could I have a wolf companion? Hot Heart
Yeah, if "animal companions" were a feature, I figured that a) they'd be yelling all about it and b) selling some cosmetic pre-order bullshit related to fur colour or horse armour. Hot Heart
So, Bungie's started a new ARG for Destiny. https://owlsector.bungie.net/ I noticed some people yesterday with bright green "dust" floating around their heads. Turns out it's a "positive" virus that comes in various forms (colours) and boosts rep gains. It is passed on via orbs dropped in PvP, I think. More "infections" unlocks more stuff on the site, I hear. So, yeah, it's an STD (super-transmitted disease) that everyone's trying to get. Lore-wise, rumour is it's some special thing released by Rasputin in anticipation of the SIVA outbreak. Could connect to the Clovis Bray stuff on Mars since there is a hidden area in the Dust Palace that is mentioned on the site. It also seems like Rise of Iron will see Guardians temporarily banned from the Tower (hence the new social space at Felwinter's Peak) to avoid possible harm to non-Light creatures, i.e. regular humans. Hot Heart
Only cosmetic things really. The "Iron Gjallarhorn" and Gjallarwing. The former is probably actually an ornament (skin) for the weapon and the latter is just a sparrow, which I believe can be bought with "silver dust" earned through playing or Silver bought with real cash money.
