TheMightyEthan
The more I read about the changes coming to The Taken King the more I think I'm done playing until it comes out. I'm just working the PoE to finish upgrading my armor at this point (I have all my characters at level 34 but with really fucked stat allotments), and if the gear is going to be instantly obsolete there's no point. Eleven
Good summary indeed! He explained stuff so clearly. As a relatively new player, i'm pretty much excited about the changes! I also like that new gear will eventually replace old legendaries, even though i just got some of them. It's going to be fun trying on new weapons again. I've had Vision of Confluence for only two weeks, and I'm already tired of it! The reworked levels sound interesting, that should open up more gear choices for guardians. Hopefully though exotics can be upgraded. I love my Hard Light. And I really want a Montecarlo. Oh, and now we know why Variks is selling all those shank burn weapons. There's gonna be a shank boss!
Hot Heart
The only thing that has me concerned is the immediate impact of untethering gear light levels from character level. As in, everyone gets put back to level 20. It sounds plausible in that the start of "Year One" was 0-20, so Year Two would begin with 20-40 but how that relates to the current endgame stuff is what makes or breaks it. Will no one be able to tackle the Nightfalls and things right away or will they change that so potentially everyone can?
TheMightyEthan
I don't think it will reset everyone back to 20. I can't remember where, but I read somewhere a person talking about how they were able to play the Taken King on their own level 34 character and it slotted right in to the new content without disruption. Eleven
I did it! Damn Skolas. I won't do that one again. Thankfully it gave me two elder ciphers. And I already got 2 from my 2 34 runs earlier today. Seriously. 4 Elder ciphers in 1 day. Also got the ship and the shader. I guess I'm done with Prison of Elders?
Hot Heart
Congrats! I swear I've not got 100 wins in crucible, but I did get a bunch more from Iron Banner last week. Either way, the emblem is miiiine. Our fireteam managed to do the 35 pretty well this week (beat Skolas on the first run), considering none of us were using our mains. The week before was a goddamn nightmare because my cousin kinda sucks and has really bad ideas. "There's not enough cover, we should go over here..." *runs off to a worse spot and dies, team gets overwhelmed and wipes* Key thing is communication though, really. Keeping everyone up to speed on the poison timers, calling out new enemy waves and majors. I guess I kinda assume the leader role. Definitely helps to have the small arms modifier on Skolas himself, really; which we didn't have last week. Toughest round is usually Fallen - Eliminate Target, but as long as you have a Titan with Helm of Saint-14, you can pop a blinding bubble outside the spawn door and just shotgun that bastard. I only died 9 times throughout the whole session (and one of them was a lag issue where I killed a minotaur and then got hit by two more shots, while another was a sort of self-sacrifice to destroy a mine). I think you only really need 2 Elder Ciphers, since the sidearm is pretty rubbish or at least not worth an exotic slot. If you haven't finished them, then you'll still need to run PoE to get the points from bosses. The 28 takes ages because it doesn't award many points, so I think you need to do two or three 34s and or a couple of 35s. What sucks is the really low chance of getting an elemental primary from Skolas. Three completions and not a single drop now.
TheMightyEthan
Nobody "liked" my post where I got all the triumphs, or congratulated me. Anyway, whining aside, as I posted above I'm done playing until the Taken King comes out. Since you're not going to be able to upgrade year-one weapons anyway I don't feel like putting a whole lot of time into continuing to do PoE for my Elder Ciphers or Etheric Light (I already have 3 34s, it would just be to get a more balanced stat build, and all my current weapons are ascended so I've got plenty of 365 weapons). Hot Heart
Eleven was a newcomer. It's like seeing your child all grown up. But, yes, well done, Ethan! Since you're not going to be able to upgrade year-one weapons anyway I don't feel like putting a whole lot of time into continuing to do PoE for my Elder Ciphers or Etheric Light As far as I know, exotics are here to stay, so the elder cipher weapons are pretty alright. TheMightyEthan
Huh, yeah, you're right, all the news about not being able to upgrade specifically mentions Legendary gear. So right now Exotics may or may not be upgradeable. Interesting. I have enough exotics though (when I got the Elder Cipher I couldn't even pick which weapon I wanted for a while, because none of them really appealed to me). I've got Invective, and see no reason to replace that with Lord of Wolves, and similarly see no reason to replace Patience and Time with Queenbreaker's Bow. CorgiShinobi
If I had people to play with to even get an Elder Cipher, it would be Queenbreaker's Bow. It's a Fusion Rifle that acts like a Sniper Rifle. You get more reserve ammo, not to mention there are many good Exotic chest armor pieces that increase Fusion Rifle ammo capacity. Anyway, with the news of Nolan North becoming the new voice of our Ghost, someone has used North's previous voice work in place of existing Ghost moments. Just got that the other day, but haven't tried it yet. Sounded decent though, yeah. The Lord of Wolves is also pretty cool. It says the range is crap, but it's actually pretty decent or at least it puts out so much damage from each 5-shot burst that you wouldn't suffer with it in PvE. danielpholt
So whilst listening to the last episode of the Giantbomb Cast, I've decided I'm going to get back into Destiny. They were pretty sure these changes could in theory totally change the end-game aspect, putting the power of the level-up back into hands of the player. How true is this? I hit a pretty large wall in Destiny when I got to level 28. I (for whatever reason) wasn't able to get to 29; never completed a raid and generally just lost all interest in it. Does this update at-least give me a reason to dive back in?

There will be some sort of equipment enhancements that go with light levels but play enough and you should be able to reach max level, it sounds like. Also, if you never bought the two earlier expansions, this is a pretty good deal: http://deals.simplygames.com/p/destiny-the-taken-king-ps4 Includes everything released so far as well as The Taken King and some bonus things. Hell, it's even the best deal for people who only want The Taken King, since the only other option is the PSN download for £40. TheMightyEthan
Man, the price is bad in the US, but it's just unbelievably laughable in the UK.
Hot Heart
I know But then I factor in how much I play it and that I prefer this over a subscription and it's not so bad, I guess...
SomTervo
I'd rather play one of the 6 or 7 other incredible-looking games that come out later this year. All respect to Bungie, though, it sounds like they're really sorting shit out with Taken King, and it does genuinely sound like it would get me back on board. Just not when there's MGSV, Mad Max, AC:S, Fallout 4, yadda. Not to mention all the great games still about from the rest of the year. Especially when TTK costs almost the same price as one of those full games. The cost takes the fucking piss. FYI I'm pretty sure your level will not get reset to 20. You keep your level. It's just certain gear that changes/becomes obsolete, IIRC.

I'm sure there will be others that appeal but then I don't have loads of free time and I still have The Witcher 3 anyway. Destiny is great because I have people to play with, there are no other shooters I like, and it's actually pretty easy to just jump into it on a somewhat casual basis. I'm excited for the changes and it's as if they're remembering the Halo storytelling feel, based on the Game Informer thing I saw today. I've also found myself getting into Crucible somewhat as well.
Eleven
MIDA Mutli-tool and Truth on this week's nightfall? Destiny really does not want me to let go. Now I have to level those up. I just have to. I still have to fully level up my Suros and Last Word. And No Land Beyond, maybe. I thought after Skolas I'd wind down but I just found myself playing for fun now. Bones of Eao jumping around on PoE 28 and Dragon Strikes. With the soon to be obsolete current gear, I find no reason to grind, so I just play whatever mode I want.
Hot Heart
I hate levelling up exotics. It takes forever. I'm working on Invective at the moment and I managed to get a full set of 10 bounties around 3500 experience on average, along with the 10% nightfall buff, then popped a shotgun telemetry before turning them all in... only unlocked 2.5 nodes on the damn thing. At least one of them was the ammo regen anyway. The Last Word is great for close up crucible maps because its TTK ("time to kill", not "the taken king") is, I think, the fastest in the game whereas MIDA can be useful in long-range crucible if you run it with an agility-plus perk; an all-round good gun for PvE too, but not one of the best. Truth is useful for void burn but I rarely get to use it.

I'm definitely getting Halo 5 in October, maybe getting FO4 and/or Tomb Raider in November, but that's it. AC:S I'll possibly get on sale sometime next year, and Mad Max I'll probably get after a price drop too.

The Last Word isn't killer until you get its Exotic perk "Last Word" where you get extra damage and precision when hip firing. It's a bit glitched though because while it's definitely a full-auto handcannon if you hold down R2, it can be sensitive of your character's movement and only fire once. Also, a more positive (though unfair) glitch is that for whatever reason you can occasionally carry over the hip fire extra damage to aiming down sight. Also its range is much better than implied in its stats, and I hate it all the more for that reason. Literally been killed across a map at what should only be Thorn/Hawkmoon range.
