Saturnine Tenshi
Is this basically a better-looking Borderlands type game?
Faiblesse Des Sens
Is this basically a better-looking Borderlands type game? ... You might want to take a step back and go to the start of this game's coverage.
Saturnine Tenshi
I didn't mean it as an insult. That's just what the gameplay video looks like. Edit: Though I guess finding distinctive parallels between the gameplay of any game and Borderlands is an insult. : \ Sorry! Faiblesse Des Sens
I know you don't meant it as an insult. It's just very far off the mark.

deanb
So it's day one of the big "info dump" on Destiny. It's still very much seeming like Borderlands with a generic art job and Halo gunplay. http://www.joystiq.com/2014/04/28/video-preview-destiny-wears-its-halo-with-pride/ http://www.gameinformer.com/games/destiny/b/playstation4/archive/2014/04/28/hands-on-with-the-three-classes.aspx http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2014/apr/28/destiny-hands-on-bungie-xbox-playstationshared-world-shooter (plenty more out there) And PC currently seems off the table at the moment (despite them doing cross-gen development) http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2014-04-28-bungie-explains-why-theres-still-no-pc-version-of-destiny
Mr. GOH!
Nothing about Destiny interests me at all.
TheMightyEthan
I think it only seems like Borderlands in that it has heavy RPG elements and is a shooter. I mean sure, that's like Borderlands, but it's a pretty superficial similarity. @Goh: RPG shooter from a company that has a history of making shooters that I very much enjoy. That's what's got me interested.
Mal
http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/05/06/us-activision-destiny-idUSBREA4501F20140506?feedType=RSS That is quite the gamble by Activision. $500 million? I'm just not sure Destiny will stick to the point that they'll break even.
Baconrath
Destiny Density gives off a Rage vibe. At least for me, anyways. Except maybe a bit less Mad Max-ish.
TheMightyEthan
As has been pointed out in other articles, that number likely contains money set aside for the infrastructure of their 10-year online plan for the universe, which will also encompass at least two more Destiny games (though I doubt it contains the development costs of those games). They're betting $500 million on the Destiny franchise, not this one game.
deanb
And yet no one is highlighting the first line says exactly where the $500million figure goes: Activision Blizzard Inc intends to spend $500 million developing and promoting "DestinyMystery solved. Probably around $100million on the game development*, maybe $50million on initial infrastructure (but likely not that much, and certainly not 10 years worth. No games company plans 10 years ahead, certainly not Activision Hero), and then around $200-300million+ in promoting it, which about matches the usual run for stuff like COD and such, and then some extra on top for DLC and what not. Might be some in the signing of Bungie that's accounted into the cost for Destiny but not a direct part of the cost of the game. Though it is quite the head scratcher, they'd have to sell a pretty large amount of units, for a brand new IP from a studio that's only major claim to fame is Halo, a game potentially not played by any of the PS4 owners that the game will have to also appeal to. It's also in limbo on the whole PC side of it, which PC could help bring up the rear with the long tail, but obviously not if they just stick with consoles. $500million is a lot. And I honestly don't think Kotick is lying or fudging numbers. Given they're a publicly traded company it's not in his best interest to make out a brand new IP aimed at primarily consoles is maybe going to put Activision half a billion in the hole. Especially when WoW is declining and COD is plateauing. It's a pretty fucking big gamble. *Though that's GTA/MMO development costs and this is nowhere near looking like like those types of games, and certainly not got the development time of it either.
Mister Jack
I imagine they'll probably at least break even with the game. I mean, it's one of the most hyped next-gen games in existence right now.
deanb
Considering the other week was meant to be "destiny info dump week", I didn't see much beyond the first days video of "yeah this still looks like Borderlands", so their hyping must be pretty weaksauce. A single COD trailer came out, and I saw that shit pop up on BBC. (and both are Activision, they have same Marketing dept)
TheMightyEthan
Yeah, that info dump was underwhelming. The real info is supposed to come with E3 and the beta (which incidentally was announced for July today). And it's not really fair to compare the first Advanced Warfare trailer to this, a better comparison would be the original Destiny reveal. Mal
No doubt there is the goal for a major franchise but Jesus, what kind of numbers do they have to pull to make the initial $500 million worth it to investors? Also it is sad that there isn't any plans for a PC port. I can muster buying a game but not a new console.

TheMightyEthan
As my Twitter followers will no doubt be aware, I've been going kind of nuts with the alpha. Here is some of the stuff I've produced so far (spoiler tags so it's not quite so gigantic): My characters: Some landscapes/environments: My pretty ship: And some videos:
Mal
Looks alright. It will really benefit from multiplayer once that comes around. Also good initiative on charging the wizard with a shotgun.
TheMightyEthan
You can play multiplayer in the Alpha, but there's only one gametype (Control). And yeah, that shotgun move was kind of out of desperation... or rather, the belief that I couldn't possibly do enough damage with the assault rifle. Hot Heart
I hope I don't hurt its feelings, Ethan, but that is one ugly-ass ship. Like someone based the design off a Spartan's kneepad.
