fuchikoma
Yeah... Japanese Ace Attorney games often end up with English scripts later (maybe backported from localization?) anyway, so it'd be weird not to make the app international - especially since these games are already localized on gaming handhelds. I'd be surprised if they didn't already have the translated version waiting to go live. As for learning Japanese to get the stuff that isn't localized... Well, it doesn't take hard work, just lots of it. If you can find it fun, it's not so bad. It's just a long road to fluency, especially for reading, so you can't let that get you down too much. When I started, Japanese games owned all the consoles and anime/manga were just starting to be seen as "a thing" in the West, but already it was common to censor/rewrite stuff with no indication anything had been changed. It's certainly easier to get stuff translated now, even as far as fanmade translation patches for games. Still, I'd totally recommend anyone try to learn some second language to fluency. It's fun and endlessly fascinating picking up all the cultural bits, at least for a geek like myself.

deanb
I recommended a fair few here: http://deanbmmv.wordpress.com/2012/08/23/my-recommended-android-apps-for-august/ I could recommend a ton of games though. I'm currently playing with Skitch from Evernote guys, should work well for my Note, replacing the in-built S-Memo app with double bonus of having it sycned with my desktop. Wacom knocked out a sort of note making app too for the Note n S3 but it was woefully shit. Had a nice feel to it, but it was sub-par in usability. Eleven
Arc Squadron It's pretty cool. Controls are smooth. Drag anywhere on the screen and your ship will move to whichever direction you dragged to. Swipe and you do a barrel roll. Your machine guns auto-fire, just have to align it to your targets. There are secondary weapons where you need to tap the target, while being in range of whatever secondary weapon. It's $0.99, I haven't bought it yet, but there's a lite version you could try. There are normal stages and stages where you navigate through the environment, you can see them on the video. I have it on my watch list. Still have to finish some of the games I bought. But yeah, I think it's pretty cool.
deanb
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mobilesrepublic.appygeek&hl=en Appy Geek. It's basically a news app, but it draws from a vast range of sources, so rather than having a feed from a specific site, you have feeds based on specific topics (Though in some topics it can end up with irrelevant stuff) And you can even sort it by mood too, though that's bit less useful. Save on subscribing and trawling through a ton of feeds, gives a good "general impression". Gonna try out their gamer focused version too. fuchikoma
Arc Squadron Woah... That looks like the Star Fox sequel I've waited for 19 years for but never got... and I can't play it, apparently because I don't have a front-facing camera. Eleven
WHAT I looked it up, and apparently that's a workaround for the app store to reject buys from older devices (3GS, iPad 1 that don't have the camera) so to ensure apps run acceptably everywhere. I sure saw a few apps with warnings that say something like "iPhone 4 required", I wonder if this is a developer workaround or kind of an Apple mandated one. In any case, if it won't run smoothly, I guess it's the best you can do so you don't have to deal with complaints of the game not running / crashing, even though you put up a minimum required device on the description in capital letters. Cydia has iOS version restrictions, so no need for "dirty" workarounds like this. I wonder how it's done on the play store? It's easy to limit per Android version, but what about per device? I know I've read a few posts here saying they can't run some app on their device.
deanb
Android can be limited by: Device type (phone/tablet), device version, screen resolution, screen size and ratio, and very likely device specifically too (such as only having it run on Tegra 3 devices). It's rather fine grained. Though you cna usually bypass it and grab the APK and sideload it anyway only to find that it runs like shit and there's a reason it's not listed on Play Store for your device (oh the joys of being a Wildfire owner for a fair while)
fuchikoma
Yeah, that's exactly what it is. I asked the devs and they said the iPhone 3GS is just too long in the tooth to make the game work with it. I didn't know Cydia had OS restrictions - I've run outdated, broken programs a lot from it. The real app store will restrict on version though. I'm thinking Apple must have some kind of device restriction scheme too... since someone might have an older CPU like mine, or an A4, A5(X), A6X, or the above in dual core, with varying levels of GPU at 1-4 cores, at different resolutions. Anyway, they've awakened a great hunger for Starfox now... I'm gonna look around and see what's out there, but I may end up with an iPod Touch 5 or iPad Mini before too much longer. (Tough call though since the iPhone 5 is 2-3x the device of those or the 4S - but it's priced to bankrupt if you buy it without a contract.) Mister Jack
I can only speak for me but my iPod touch 5 was totally worth it, even if I'm gonna be paying for it over 6 months.
Eleven
Galaxy on Fire 2. It's currently free on the app store (SD version, but it has retina support). It's a fun space sim?/shooter? You can upgrade your ship by buying new ships, new weapons, new equipments and armor. Each ship has a different number of slots for equipments and the usual stuff like improved stats etc. You can also mine for ore, do side missions (kill pirates, deliver stuff, look for stuff). The main mission is kinda cool too, i think. It's voiced, not that good though, but I think it works. It has iCloud support (though currently broken in an update), so you could play on both your phone on the go and in the iPad at home. Which I would really like to do but it's broken right now. OpenFeint cloud saves apparently works, but that service is about to die so no use using that now. Oh... and it's letterboxed on the 5 btw, . The HD version (below!) isn't. There's an HD version, usually at 9.99, but right now it's 4.99. The HD version has improved graphics for iPhone 5/new iPad, and I assume the later iPod touches and the 4s as well. According to toucharcade, it goes down to 0.99 every 2 months or so. It just did at the end of October, too bad I didn't know about it then. Oh well, I'm thinking it would go on sale again around Christmas. Man... I didn't even think I would be gaming a lot on my iPad and phone, but that's what's been happening lately. I even raided the free stuff and price drops last week, unfortunately I didn't find anything good.
Eleven
I'm going to be filling this thread with cool little games! Mikey Shorts is an addicting little platformer, where you touch people turned to stone and they come back to life! Or something. There's a story in there somewhere, also something about golden short pants... Controls are just back, forward, slide and jump. There are coins scattered around, there are "enemy" robots that don't really hurt you, they just block your path. The levels are simple, the game's not about difficulty, but about speed, timing and mastery of the levels. It's a time trial, basically. You have to touch all stone statues though to complete the levels. There's also a ghost mode where it plays your fastest run while you're running the level, so you'll know if you're ahead of your previous time. And the coins don't really matter. You could customize Mikey Shorts by buying stuff from the store using your collected coins. Mine's got an afro and sideburns now. The leaderboards right now look legit, and I find myself replaying levels for 10-20 minutes just to get into the top 100, or top 50. I actually got to #9 on one of the levels! Hurray! I don't know how I else I could improve that run, though. EDIT: Oh! Forgot to mention there's a Halloween version of the game that is out for free, if you wanna try the game. Mikey Shorts is $0.99. TheRevanchist
So, I am playing The Simpsons Tapped Out on the iPhone. Basically, FarmVille with cool Simpsons overlay and characters you give tasks to do, like make Apu work a 12 hour shift or make Lisa do next weeks homework. It is pretty boring, but the characters are familiar enough to keep me playing for at least another week before deleting it. Meh.

Eleven
Anyone here using any iDevice and Google Music? Which app do you use or recommend? I'm trying to do research but oh my god each app says they're #1 I can't decide!
deanb
I was under the impression the only Google Music app is the Google Music app, due to the whole no-API thing that kinda makes it hard to make alternate apps that access your Google Music. [WordHero] I've bing playing this. I'm currently in the Platinum league. Though I do kinda suck so I'm surprised I made it this far. I think I might actually be impeded by using my Note since I've further to travel with my finger to make words. Also I finally activated Appaware (installed it ages back, just hadn't set up an account), and if you add me as a friend we can recommend apps and such. (p.s the default is to only show the recommendations publicly, the app list is normally friends only and you can hide apps if you wish)

You assume that not having an official API is going to stop people. I don't use iOS but I do know the apps exist. I assume they all want you to pay first though? I don't know how you try out apps on iOS.
Eleven
Yeah, they're around $1.99. I might have to go with whatever lifehacker suggests. In the article itself or in the comments. Some have lite versions, which is always good. I've bought some full apps after trying out the lite versions after a week or so. Oh! Word games! I'm playing Writer Rumble. I suck though. I don't know how other people find consecutive 5 letter words. I need to read more. But still, it's pretty fun. It's like a fighting game where you throw words instead of hadoukens. There are powers too for different characters though not that many (x3 damage, +health, hide words, reverse letters etc). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S8QfkbRU8Mw Edited December 11, 2012 by eleven

deanb
Some recent gaming additions n such: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.drummerGames.px14 - 14px. It plays sort of like a phone based SuperMeatBoy. For a free app it's pretty damn swish. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=me.kiip.skeemo - Only recently got this. It's a puzzle game, kinda neat. Bit of a thinking game, and fun when you get a combo up. It's more to be tried than explained. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cypressworks.changelogviewer - It's a changelog viewier. Great for seeing changes to your apps. Should really be something built into Play Store (though this also works with Amazon Appstore apps too). https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.epicgames.EpicCitadel - Epic Citadel. It's a UE3 demo now out for Android. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.distractionware.superhexagon - this is out for Android now too. I'm not much of a fan tbh. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.czarnomorski.theme.dcikonz - Grab relevant launcher, make your phone pretty and (mostly) consistent. Mister Jack
I'm still a neophyte so I guess I'd just rephrase that by asking which apps you personally find useful in your everyday life. I've never had a smartphone before and I feel practically paralyzed by choice.
deanb
Well I think I've posted about Any.Do a fair few times, it recently updated to have "Any.Do Moments" which is kinda neat (gives you a breakdown at the start of the day of tasks to do, lets you re-schedule for later day, or put an alarm on for them at specific point in the day). Has a Chrome extension too. AirDroid is something I'll use now and then because I'm lazy and because some of the phone tasks are easier done on a PC when you have one at hand. Hacker's Keyboard is my keyboard of choice (they're super simple to swap between, tap the keyboard icon in notification shade to change between them), though I'm unsure if the SGS3 is big enough to comfortably use it. BBC News for my news on the go. Might be less relevant for you though since US stuff comes under "World", but good for at a glance stuff I guess. There's always Pulse and Feedly for regular ole RSS stuff (others use Currents and Flipboard, I'm not a fan) Oh and I use Nova as my launcher, with DCiKonz for the icon themeing. I linked my AppAware account up above, maybe flip through some of my stuff on there. I guess Screenfilter is neat too, I find my phone a bit too bright at night and out n about. Oh and Pocket too, I sort of use it as part "read it later" (its original name) and part "read it on my PC, can't be arsed opening the link someone posted to Twitter right now".
