deanb
Wait, you didn't know other languages used feminine and masculine? Did you not learn a language at school? My doulingo record was 2 days. Though my younger sister got into it for a couple weeks. I had her tablet do daily reminders for it.
TheMightyEthan
I knew that Romance languages used feminine and masculine, I did not know German did.
Thursday Next
German actually has three, masculine, feminine and neute. (Der, die, das).
Mister Jack
I downloaded Pac Man 256 on my phone to kill time at the airport, thinking I'd just delete it later, but this is actually a pretty damn good Pac Man game. It's also nice that the microtransactions aren't shoved in your face. You could easily play this game without ever spending a cent, but I may end up buying the dot doubler for 5 dollars just to support it. danielpholt
Me and my GF have been playing a game on our Chromecast recently. It's called Big Web Quiz and it's exactly what it sounds like. They use the Google Knowledge Graph to populate the game with various questions (although most seem to fall into the category of Who is this?, Where is This? and How Many of These?) which is unfortunate but whatever, it also allows a certain random approach that you might enjoy. The real hook of the game however, is the ability to play on the TV whilst using your phone or tablet. The game is designed to be played in a group; its a party game. It supports up to 5 (I think) players, and each game will take you roughly 5 minutes. It's free, its fun and it's pretty inventive. Wouldn't mind seeing more of this stuff going forward. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.apps.bigwebquiz.app.prod&hl=en
deanb
I'm kind of amazed none of the jackbox games have come to Chromecast given the console equivalents work in pretty much the same way. I know Hasbro have a Chromecast version of Monopoly n Game of Life n such, with the slight snag that each user needs a copy of the app, which all told for 4 players makes it cost more than the physical game. Mal
In my quest to learn written Cantonese/Mandarin, I came across Pleco. To just call it a dictionary is an understatement, especially if you buy some of the add ons. The add ons, well, add some nice bell and whistles to the robust (and ad) free version. Maybe by year's end, I'll be able to read some of the more common characters like those found in menus and band messages...
deanb
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.projectrockofficial.rockclock Official Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson alarm clock app. Totally free, no IAPs, get woken up by dulcet tones of The Rock or chainsaw dueling and such others. No snooze as The Rock doesn't believe in them.
TheMightyEthan
That's kind of awesome. I wish I could listen to the various tones without downloading the app, just cause I want to hear what they sound like.
TheFlyingGerbil
Anyone tried Fallen London? One city. A thousand choices. Discover a dark and hilarious Gothic underworld where all your actions have consequences. And did we mention it's free? Welcome. Delicious friend. I'm enjoying the story aspect without really having a clue what half the stuff Items and stats are doing.
Mal
I'm not sure what I'm getting into but I just found out that Granblue Fantasy is available in English so I'm giving that a whirl. Currently you got to find the APK to download it or play it as a Chrome browser app. So far all I know is this is a free-to-play turn based RPG. It has a timer and all but it supposedly pretty good on stuff to do while you wait. Now to dive in... Edit: Eh... rolling for waifus the game. I don't think I will ever quite understand mobile games... well anything besides Reigns. Reigns uses smartphones correctly. danielpholt
So is *anyone* using Googles new chat app Allo? What they've built is solid, heck I'd even go as far as to say that its fun to use, but once again they fucked up on its messaging, and failed to address why anyone would actually want to use it over something less Hangouts, Messenger or even Hangouts. Thursday Next
I use Allo a bit. Google really just need to unify their messaging apps so that we're all on the same thing. I like that I can reply with one click on Allo.
TheFlyingGerbil
I'd like to use it but I tried once before to get people away from whatsapp, and failed miserably so not sure I can be bothered to try again. Really wish I didn't have to use whatsapp
deanb
I have Allo. Currently I get jokes from it, don't know much else to use it with. Recently started with Whatsapp from connecting with folks on the geek club I attend. Mainly use FB Messenger still, has the bonus of working on desktop n mobile (Whatsapp does too but it's fiddly n still uses your phone). danielpholt
Same. I've stopped using Telegram (which is great BTW) in favour of using nothing but Facebook Messenger and Allo. Ideally we'd all be using the same thing but half my friends use Whatsapp and as much as I go on about it sucking, they're not interested in switching. TheMightyEthan
I just use SMS... And occasionally FB messenger.

TheFlyingGerbil
I'm playing that at the moment, enjoying it but not paying enough attention to see if there's any knack to getting different cats to leave mementos. I've never installed facebook messenger. I used to have the FB app when it had messaging built in, but it crashed all the time and was a massive install, so when they hived off messenger I just uninstalled it. Annoying thing is you used to be able to see your messages on the mobile website, but now you can't do that and have to go to the desktop version - really a faff but at this point I'm not changing my mind. Luckily I don't have enough friends that it's too much of a bother.

Mal
Coming from Game Maker Toolkit, Downwell might fit the bill of being a nice mobile game where controller doesn't suck. You're only pushing three buttons: left, right and jump/shoot. The only issue here that this game is fast and your hands seemingly get in the way. I say seemingly since the buttons are down on the lower edge which covers up that part of the screen and the game scrolls fast enough to make seeing whatever is there moot. Though, if you play Downwell on PC or consoles, you shouldn't have this problem. Mind, this game was made with mobile in mind.

TheMightyEthan
There's a new Vampire: The Masquerade game called We Eat Blood that appears to be along the lines of Lifeline, where you're playing via text messages. Looks neat, but it's $5.
