I'm playing Chrono Trigger for the DS at the moment, but so far am not getting the "best RPG ever" vibe from it. I'm in a factory and have got kind of lost so maybe that it putting a downer on it. I guess I'm quite near the start so I hope it picks up story-wise.

I never played any other M&M games, though. But now I kinda want to look into it. Might be time to finally play that copy of Dark Messiah of Might and Magic that's been collecting dust in my Steam account for a while now.

If you want to get into Might and Magic, I'd suggest with Heroes 3. It's available via GoG for $9.99 or you can find a retail copy of all them for cheap. Dark Messiah is more Might and Magic RPG. If you don't mind turn based strategy then I'd suggest this. It's an easy way to get into the series. Also not everyone liked Dark messiah, in other words it's not a good entry point in the series. If you want the RPG try Might and Magic 6-9 those are also decent entry points.

All of them are old but I still play Heroes 3 have been playing that since 1999.

Also Capy is an awesome little Canadian Developer. I'm just not buying it since I've too many games to play right now :).

On Topic:

Still playing Alice, Shadows of the Damned.

Also Silent HIll: Shattered Memories (wii version), The Last Remnant, Bloodlines (again), Eschalon Book 2 (I decided to skip 1), Dwarves, DoW.

Bayonetta

This game is "even for Japan" weird. I get it most of the time, but other times I feel like certain elements of its presentation are lost on me. While the ever-present Fly Me to The Moon soundtrack and pole-dance-style battle cutscenes filmed from a vulva-cam are confusing (and delighting) me on some level, I have to say, I'm giving a shit about the story and characters more than I do in most games lately. I don't understand how or why, but this game is doing something correctly as far as I'm concerned.

Also this combat is delicious. Sharp man, finely tuned to perfection. The only concern I have is the A/B dual weapon layout. With my type of personality I fear I might be spending more time than I should dicking around with my loadout to try to figure out which weapons make sense where. Also, shit is expensive. I'm sure currency will start coming in at a quicker rate eventually though.

Yeah, this game is great so far.

The worst part of Chrono Trigger is the level layouts. Some pretty silly design decisions were made in that regard. But the story, combat, open world (a bit later on), multiple story paths, music, and graphics are all incredible. Easily one of my favorite RPGs, and I just played it earlier this year. If you get lost this walkthrough is super-helpful.

EDIT: Oh yeah and I'm playing a Skulls of the Shogun alpha build and Runespell Overture review build. Both are great thus far.

I'm playing Uncharted for the first time now, even though I've owned my PS3 for three years now. I had barely played for a half hour when the fan suddenly went into hyper mode. I actually grew concerned because my PS3 had never been that loud before and the back felt alarmingly warm, almost hot. Needless to say, I stopped playing right away.

I know some of the earlier PS3s have an issue of thermal paste drying out (mine is a fat 40GB), but I'm very hesitant about opening the system to see for myself.

Just started up Nier.

How's that coming along? That was one that I almost wound up ignoring due to review scores (I know, shame on me), but wound up getting after reading a lot of positive things from gamers. Very glad I gave it a shot, I wound up enjoying it a lot.

As for me, just started playing Alice: The Madness Returns. Maybe this is more for the "shameless gaming month" thread.... Oh well. I'm actually having a really good time so far. The gameplay is very simple, especially coming off of Bayonetta, but I'm enjoying the artwork, characters, story, and voice acting. Maybe I needed something a little simpler to cool me down. Whatever the reason, I dig this a lot. It sucks that I'm not familiar with neither the first game or the original Alice in Wonderland story (double shame on me!), but I'll just have to catch up after I'm done with this.

For tonight though, it's Rock Band 3, and I bring it up for one reason. If anyone in here kills on any instrument but drums, feel free to send me a PSN invite. I don't play that often lately, maybe once a week, but I like having some strong players in my friend list to team up with on occasion. Here are my stats, for a point of comparison. If there are kids in the room, cover their eyes, as my gold star count is obscene. Consider yourselves warned.

Gonna make a run through Fallout New Vegas before I build again because it's one of the few games I bought in the summer sale that will actually run on my current computer.

I always go away from the Fallout games and forget just how good the environments are, even if the combat is ridiculously janky sometimes.

Woah, impressive! Didn't see it on there but this is a great song.

Wow, that looks seriously tiring. The crossing-over can be a hassle too, but my kit configuration allows for relatively painless accessibility of the right side w/ the left hand over the right. I wouldn't even attempt that on a stock kit. I wish I could say it stinks so I don't ever have to worry about conquering it, but it wasn't bad. I think I'll put that right next to Guns of Summer in the short list of songs I'll probably wind up having to buy one day for the sport... but that I also slightly fear hehe. I just earned my Fly Like an Eagle gold stars last night though, so I'm feeling kinda strong... Who knows, maybe this is the week.

Yeah, there's no way I can finish that song without no fail. The 'operation' part is much easier but the first section is insane. Their drummer is truly a madman. :o

But they are my favourite band. Really wish RB would get more of their tracks. Even if it's just the one from GH:WoR

Alice: Madness Returns--also came with the original American McGee game to play, too.

Yeah, I rented from Gamefly though. I considered paying $10 to play the first one and get caught up, but I got into this one so quickly that I guess it's not that important any more. I decided I'll finally read Alice In Wonderland, as it is a classic, and maybe watch a play-through of the McGee game when I'm done with this.

I really feel ridiculous discovering the world of Alice at the tender age of 30 >.>

The man definitely has energy. Watching that makes me want to play tonight... Hmm.

On a side note, is that some kind of special mode in WoR that's making the notes multi-colored, or is there some additional feature to WoR drumming that I didn't know about? The few times I've tried playing on a GH kit I found the extra note to make things more confusing, and when everything goes grey (I think maybe to pick up OD energy?) I realized how helpful the colors are, as I was losing my place easily, though unfamiliarity of the kit likely contributed to that significantly. I don't know how well I'd cope if the color coordination went out the door completely.

Yeah, I think he's got some sort of modifier that just randomises the colours. I guess if you're familiar enough with the game and kit (as you are with RB), it wouldn't throw you.

And, yeah, the man has oodles of energy. All the varying time signatures, sudden changes and sheer speed of some of it is a hard thing to pull off. To do it all at a live show is impressive.

L.A. Noire, but it's a rental and I might have to return it before I finish it. It's $2 a day, so right now the game is costing me $6 and I'm about halfway.

I think I might stop caring about the little things in the game and go on a rampaging detective of justice where cars explode and people are merely speed bumps. :tophat:

Recently started playing again two games I hadn't touched in a while. BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger and Rock Band 3 on drums.

BlazBlue, what can I say, I played a few hours last night and again today and the tip of my thumb still hurts.

As for Rock Band, it's been a few months since I played drums but somehow I'm better than I was before.

I was previously stuck on medium but now I started working my way through RB3's setlist on hard and haven't hit a wall yet.

It's weird but I found that taking an extended (but not too long) break from the game can actually help you get better when you're stuck. I guess it's because you keep the muscle memory but lose the bad habits you developed on lower difficulties. Or something like that.

I know when I played drums when I was younger, I almost never sat and practiced, yet somehow I was playing better as time went on (when I would get together with people at a studio or something). I attribute a lot of this to some kind of mental drumming. I think that's the technical term. Dumb as it sounds, I think it happens because one doesn't stop paying attention to drums in music, which can be a sort of learning tool itself, depending on how much one is paying attention. A lot of what seems like idle tapping on the leg and floor while listening to music on the train can actually translate to a kind of practice. While it doesn't help physical stamina or conditioning directly, it can certainly help with timing and coordination.

The bolded section I believe to be true as well, not just for drumming or RB, but with many activities that I hit a wall with in terms of skill growth. A little time off can work wonders. In my experience anyway.

I've always found the guitar hero drumming interesting because I fucking suck at it. I've played drums for about 5 years, been in about 5 bands, wrote a lot of my own parts and songs, but I cannot for the life of me get the guitar hero/rock band drums. Every time I've tried them I've only been able to do a passing job on songs I already know all the parts to on an actual drum kit, and even then I couldn't get the fills.

I genuinely respect people who can "get" the rock band drums, mostly because it's similar enough to real drums, but at the same time nothing like it. I can tell you for sure I'd do a lot better if there was just a little bit near whatever was supposed to be the hi-hat that told me whether I should play quarter notes or eighth notes etc.

I'm sort of the opposite of that. I "get" the game well enough, I just need to work on my speed, really. But put me on a real drumkit or even in freestyle mode and....

I need the game to tell me what to play otherwise I just don't know what the hell I'm doing.
