Was it a human boss? Because if so I bet I know who it is and he's the hardest boss in the whole game by far, at least without counting the DLC which I have not gotten around to.

Spoiler

Later on there's a side mission to fight him AND another boss AT THE SAME TIME.

Yeah, I can't remember his name but it's in a small grassy area. If he's the hardest than that's... actually not too bad. I almost had him one time but he just kills me way too quickly so there's very little room for mistakes. If I just had a higher damage output I could probably deal with him relatively easily.

That spoiler sounds like fucking hell, though. Jesus.

I finally wrapped back around to Nier Automata. I was going to start a new game but I died during the intro portion at the boss. I've forgotten that painful prologue. So screw it, back onto my old save. I have some idea where I was at and in a bit was back to my old self. On to the road to Ending E or whatever... I doubt I can be in time for Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and Tokyo Xanadu.

I'm having a total blast with Middle-Earth: Shadow of War, but I'm at that infamous endgame now where you have to basically fight a prolonged war and the average level of your enemies jumps up dramatically.  This was clearly designed to entice people into buying loot crates to help even the odds, which is definitely shitty, but fortunately I found a good way to level up without having to resort to loot boxes, so if you are playing or have played this game and gave up around this part because the grind was so bad, here's my advice:

Lose your forts on purpose.

Seriously, do it.  Defending your forts requires a ton of resources and you'll be going through your spoils of war like water trying to buy all these upgrades to fend off attackers who are ten levels higher than you.  However, if you lose the fort first then all you have to do to move on to the next battle is reclaim it.  This is much better than trying to defend for two reasons.  Firstly, you can still lower the fort's level by doing missions to kill off individual defending captains.  It's much easier to attack a fort with a 120 rating than defend from attackers with a 380 rating.  On top of that, you get 3x as much XP for capturing a fort as you do for defending it.  You're guaranteed at least one level up for every fort you capture, maybe even two.  Is it still a grind?  Yeah, a bit, but much less of one.  I'm halfway through after just a few hours using this method.  It's possible the last few stages will jump up again and force me to find another way to grind, but I still went from level 40 to 45 after just a few battles.

Ending A and B done for now. Looks like C and D is where the real Nier Automata begins. I don't think any games I have played before gotten this much "Huh!?" and "What the fuck?", in a good way, out of me.

And Adam, that is a fair assessment.

Just finished the chapter 1 of Xenoblade Chronicles 2... it has only just begun but initial impressions is not great on my end. I however mostly pin it down to not being familiar with how every system of this game series works. I have heard of how Xenoblade Chronicles 1 and X were kind of like a MMO but I didn't expect something like this.

Combat is just bizarre. It's pretty much automated with options to be manual from what I can tell. Here's the thing though, you control the character movements in real time for positioning bonuses and avoiding attacks... I think. For me, there's poor feedback to the player if it is working. Getting attacked is weird too in that melee attacks have range. I'm clearly out of range but I get smacked all the same. Happens a lot when I initiate combat which is an other complaint I have. You have to touch or provoke enemies to initiate combat. Meaning you could be fighting one enemy just a few feet away from a non-combatant enemy. I don't know what to make of this. Combat and combat initiation just feels clunky to my eyes.  Maybe everything will clear up once the game is fully introduced but a few hours of this was kind of grinding.

It's just a bit frustrating because the clunkiness is contrasted by the fast-paced combat in the cutscenes. It's honestly one of the biggest disconnects I have encountered because I'm controlling the character in real time during normal gameplay. I know it is normal in JRPGs but this is intense.

Strange and frustrating but I'm going to push on. As I said in my opening paragraph, I mostly pin it down to me not understanding this game yet. In the past Final Fantasy XII and Xanadu Next gave me similar frustrating feelings but after getting to know them I now give them high praises. Maybe I'll do the same with XC2. Or I might purge it from my mind like Xenosaga (the last Xeno- game I have played).

Xenosaga is funny. I was digging it way back when until I found out that I COMPLETELY fucked up speccing my characters out. Like 30-40 hours in I hit a boss that I just cannot beat because the game so poorly explained how upgrading your characters worked.  The in-game tutorials in XC2 is giving my flash backs to that moment. Hopefully that doesn't happen.

---

Giving it some more time, I've come to gripes with the battles. Essentially the battles around non-aggro enemies is missing a break to a separate battle screen like say in Final Fantasy or Tales games. Still... getting punched to death by an level 81 (I'm level 8) gorilla that came from across the map and hitting me while I was a good 50-100 feet away is frankly, bullshit.

---

Chapter 3 and I am feeling way better about this game.

So I got Star Wars Republic Commando when it was $2.97 on Steam.

Never have played it, so this is my first time with a game that's toted as being great and underrated. HOWEVER, word to the wise you'll want to install the mod fix for the graphics and UI. By default the game was giving me trouble and was absolutely ugly given the poor bitmapping. Once I got the mod installed, I could actually play the game better (and no eye strain)!

My younger brother got me Nioh so I am playing that. Not sure why he got it NOT on sale but whatever. I appreciate it since I wasn't expecting to play Nioh until at least summer. If I can power through it then it'll be another 2017 game that I have played. If you ever taken note on what I play, I rarely keep up with a year this closely. To be honest, it is insane how much 2017 games that I have played. Anyhow...

A quick impression run has me excited. While it is Souls-like, the quickness to the combat feels so good. Meticulous but quick is how I like it. I'm glad the impression by watching Nioh gameplay holds true so far.

I started Xenoblade Chronicles X, the one game I still own a Wii U for. I'm only a few hours in, but aside from the battle UI, everything about it feels completely different, both in good ways and bad. One thing that annoys the shit out of me is that I am pretty much forced to use the clunky gamepad to play because as far as I can tell, the second screen is the only way to see the map. The navigation is much better than the first game, but did they have to only put the map on that damn second screen? Was a separate menu so much to ask?

Hoping I have an easier time this round, but not looking forward to having to fight this damn boss every time I want to go for a different end trophy

Do you mean the

Old Schoolhouse boss?

and the "special bond" character trophies?

If so, I didn't have to fight him more than once when I played on PC. Because of the way the requirements for it work, I was able to have a few people available on my first playthrough and I was able to get everyone else on my second playthrough with just a little bit of planning. IIRC, the only bit I had to replay multiple times was the section from the bike trip to get the costumes up to the actual scene for the trophies. And even then turbo mode made that a breeze, took me like 20mins lol. This method is much less tedious if you're planning on doing a second playthrough anyway.

Getting back into The Witcher 3 since I've not actually played the DLC. It's been good so far.

I mean, it's stopped me feeling comfortable in combat and actually provides a bit of a challenge, which is refreshing... but it's also a pain when you die and have to wait through a long loading screen. Goddamn, Ofieri Mage...

I'm working my way through Hearts of Stone since that came first. Just did the whole possessed Geralt and the wedding stuff and it's great. No "real" combat, just lots of little moments. Knocks the socks off pretty much every other RPG with its creativity, versatility and nuance. So simple yet effective; the writing really makes it.

Factorio has absolutely consumed my entire existence. I can't stop playing it and when I'm not playing I'm either watching youtube videos about it or thinking about what I'll do next in my own base. The game exists at the center of this very specific Venn diagram where Civ research trees, base-building/crafting survival games and Zachtronics-style logic puzzles all intersect and I'm starting to suspect it was designed specifically to kill me.

I'm only half joking. I think I have a better understanding now of how people manage to die in those internet cafes horror stories. The game is so engrossing that at one point on my first day of playing a real game I noticed my ass had gone completely numb, looked at the time and went "Holy shit, how is it that late already?!... And for how long have I been starving???" I'm more careful about taking breaks and getting up once in a while now...

I don't think I've been that enthralled with a game since XCOM: Enemy Unknown. It's absolutely mind-boggling to me that it's still in Early Access because it's fairly polished and packs an absolute shit load of content. There's a short-ish tutorial "campaign" but the real meat of the game is the freeplay mode and that's a fairly lengthy affair. Even though I bought it during the sale, it wasn't discounted at all and it still feels like a complete steal.

God Eater Resurrection, turns out, there's a ton of stuff added, finished all story missions, currently trying to finish all free, extra and urgent missions. However, difficulty 14 missions are really annoying, a lot of them do not allow you to bring any teammates, so you have to solo them, which, in terms of difficulty isn't so bad, the problem is that every 5 seconds the operator yells "retreat and heal!" or some variant of the same phrase, it gets annoying quick, specially when you can't easily disengage to properly heal because enemies are fast as hell. :P At this point I just went with bullet cheese, crafting the most OP bullets I could find online and spamming them to hell and back. :P

The Dragon Ball Fighter Z beta is live and it's unlike any fighter I've ever played. It is by far the most accessible I've ever seen. Every special move I see so far is done with simple QCF or QCB motions, and that includes supers. All other functions except two are mapped to their own buttons, and the other two only require you to push two face buttons together. Basic combos can be done just by mashing a button. It was definitely made for Dragon Ball fans who have never played a fighting game before, but at the same time there's a lot of depth if you are willing to look for it. I imagine some purists might be mad that it's so easy to pick up a controller and do cool shit, but as someone who considers himself pretty good at fighters, I don't mind at all. It makes for more exciting matches when anyone can pull off some crazy moves..
