Currently not really playing anything. Finished Prey so in that weird limbo of other games. Trying to settle on something to complete. I maybe need the weekend so I can put a bunch of hours into a game and properly settle in.

I'm totally open to suggestions of what to dive into. I'd maybe have tried Death of the Outsider but not wanting to follow an Arkane game with an Arkane game.

Still playing far too much Battlegrounds. XBOX and PC combined I'm pushing 300 hours of game time. I've certainly cooled from the highs of October though, often taking a week or so between sessions. Game has its issues, the new map sucks, the cheating thing just won't go away and as much fun as solo is, sometimes its too tense for its own good.

Also playing boatloads of Rocket League on the Switch. Its not the best looking version of the game, but If you're like me and value not hogging the tv, having it on a handheld is invaluable.

I should really start recording some of my Monster Hunter sessions.  They can get absolutely insane.  Me and three other guys were hunting an Anjanath (T-rex monster) and managed to hurt it enough so that it started running away from us up into a tree.  We were all pretty hurt too and down to only one life left between us, so it was anybody's game.  However, going up into the tree was a bad move for the Anja because a Rathian (Wyvern monster) suddenly swooped down all pissed off, picked up the Anja in its claws, and dropped it right the fuck off the top of the tree.  Hitting the ground from that high up did over 1000 damage to it, and this is a game where the heaviest weapon type is currently doing around 100 with a fully charged finisher.  That poor bastard didn't stand a chance.  I should note that this was not a scripted event.  That Anjanath was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I started Assassin's Creed Origins yesterday. It's fun so far (I've played for about an hour and a half) but man, it just is not interested in getting you to care about the main character or his mission. The opening cutscene is so sparse that I'm not even completely clear on who I am or what the back story is, or why I'm wanting to murder these priests. I'm like 75% sure they kidnapped me and murdered my family and turned me into a guard for the pharaoh, but that doesn't really make a whole lot of sense so...

This game can be really cool looking at times.

Re: the backstory: I've now played a flashback sequence, and I had misunderstood. The line from the opening cutscene that I had based my "pharaoh's guard" assumption on actually was just a reference to my station pre-kidnapping, which was a kind of protector-of-the-realm type thing. (The line was something along the lines of "I thought the medjay were supposed to protect the pharaoh"). Apparently the backstory is supposed to be a bit of a mystery, but the way it was presented it didn't feel like it was mysterious, just disjointed. I'm still enjoying the game though.

I am currently playing World of Final Fantasy.

Super fun and cute game. Not exactly a difficult game, but certainly something great to put on and chill out with.

Only major issue for me has been it has an old-fashioned save point system which means playing to a certain point to save, and also early in-game trying to head to a save point and triggering new cutscenes n what not I then have to sit through n don't want to skip cos I don't want to miss bits.

Otherwise it's just a load of goofy fun. Runs great on Steam Link too.

Well since finishing what I can in Fractured But Whole (which I absolutely loved btw). I moved on to Rise Of The Tomb Raider, I loved 2013 and I'm enjoying Rise, but I gotta admit it hasn't really sank it's teeth in me yet. I'm not too far into it. Having only done 1 optional Tomb so far and a few story things.

Going in and out of Okami and just restarted Subnautica.

My issue with Okami is not with the gameplay but the smeary look the game has. I cannot play too long due to it. I got to keep going to see whats all the hubbub is about but so far it isnt't bad.

Subnautica is a revisit after it got its 1.0 release a while back. More polished than I remember and man the sounds of the ocean now is so good. When I played an earlier version, it was more silent. Now any growls by a Not-Shark have me looking around to see where I should run away from.

I loved 2013, and thought Rise was even better. I'm a little nervous about Shadow, since it's a different developer working on it.

Okay, so having sunk a bit more time into Rise, I'm loving it more and more now. I have cleared the rest of the optional tombs in the soviet installation now. Story wise I'm just past the part where you lose Jacob....again xD.

Dragon Quest Builders

You know, I was expecting a Minecraft clone. It definitely looks like Minecraft, but it plays a lot more like a 3D Terraria, with an emphasis on base building and (slightly) less on mining. I'm a sucker for building games in general and this one's pretty great. It's also a great fit on Switch, play it while listening to a podcast, or play it in bed before sleep. Looks and performs great on in the dock as well. I think there's a lot of room for minor improvement with a sequel, and everything I've seen (flying, swimming, co-op) looks great, hopefully it comes west this year.

I want that game on Switch, but I'm not paying $45 for it when it's $30 on PS4.

It's the same problem multiplats have when they release on PC late. A game I would have paid $60 for at launch comes out on PC 9 months later, but it's still $60, so in my mind you're asking me to pay $60 for a 9-month-old game, even though it's "new" on PC.

I've been playing Far Cry 5 (gracias to @Chewblaha).

It's pretty damn fine, and streamlines a lot of elements. I really like that the main missions show up on the map n hovering over them you get like a CB radio message. Also the side-missions n miniquest things pop up as you save people, they'll usually have heard a rumour or what not about someone being harassed by Edens Gate or what not or some area that might have a stash in it etc.

I'm not keen on how with it sort of split into three areas (not like physically, it's like between the family members, you end up with weird forced missions that kind of throw you off when you're first doing shit in those zones. Also Faith can shut the fuck up. Like it was neat the first couple times, but limited dialogue in an open world and no ability to make her go away (apart from I guess do her areas missions n eventually kill her or whatever) drags on a bit.

It's somewhat obvious it's gonna pussyfoot around a few elements that initial marketing implied it was gonna tackle directly, but this is a multinational AAA studio. They do put a few jokes in the descriptions, such as when you torch an animal instead of arrow it you get 'burnt meat' which the description says slap a bit of tomato sauce on it and it'd be good enough for a president.

Also I'm on Normal n maybe I just straight up suck, but I seem to die a lot, and not just from shooting but like jumping if you open the parachute and it's like..higher than you'd comfortably jump but not a plane it usually just kills you on impact so I'm not wholly seeing the point of the parachute. Seems way less forgiving than it was in 4.

Currently playing Rise of the Tomb Raider. I loved the first one and this has been a good continuation so far. The writing's a bit hacky in places but the story seems decent enough. Lara's VO has this weird habit of pronouncing Constantinople with a B instead of a P and it bugs me the same way she messed up "pestle" in the first game. She's good enough at the acting for everything else, just undermines it all a little there.

I've been bouncing back and forth between Prey and Dragon Quest VII all week. I started Prey like 2 weeks ago and it's absolutely amazing. Like 20mins in I was already kicking myself for not starting it months ago. But then Square-Enix announced Dragon Quest XI for PC and it got me kinda hyped up, so that 3DS copy of DQVII that's been sitting on my shelf for over a year was suddenly calling to me.

So far, Prey is pretty much everything I want from an immersive sim. It's definitely more System Shock than Deus Ex but I'm starting to think I might actually like this formula better. Or at least, better than the modern version of Deus Ex. I'm really tempted to try the old System Shock games once I'm done with it.

Dragon Quest VII isn't quite how I thought it would be. The only DQ I ever played is DQVIII and that was your typical JRPG with a main story. You're going after the villain to break the curse on your kingdom. Super straightforward stuff. DQVII, at least so far, doesn't have that same kind of core narrative to it. I'm just time travelling to random islands in the past and making them reappear in the present. So far every single island's story has been self-contained. I guess DQ fans call them "vignettes" or whatever. It's not what I expected but I'm enjoying it all the same.

Why did I wait so long to get Splatoon 2? I played to the first boss in single player. and levelled up to 6 in turf wars. Had a go in handheld mode to and it was just as enjoyable bit I think I'll stick to the TV. Anyone who never got a chance with the first one I'd heartily recommend they have a go of number 2.

Playing Ni No Kuni II.  It's not bad, and combat is better than the first one, but at the same time it's a really simple game.  Battles are very simple.  The story, at least what I've seen so far, is really basic.  That might change later, who knows.  The game is piss easy unless you're severely underleveled (I'm level 30 taking on level 45 enemies).  The characters are simple too, although I do find Evan's kindness and idealism to be endearing.  It's not reinventing the wheel.  In fact, it's doing pretty much the opposite of inventing the wheel, whatever that is.  That said, I'm not having a bad time with it.  I'm not blown away or addicted to it, but it's also perfectly competent and beautiful to look at.  I also enjoy the kingdom building and army skirmish mechanics.  It's a nice RPG to just relax and chill out with.  Worth 60 bucks?  Right now I'd say no.  This game, and perhaps the franchise in general, definitely feels aimed toward younger players.  We'll see what happens, though.

So, after finishing Prey I thought I'd take the time to jump back into Warframe and finally check out what this Second Dream quest is all about. It was the entire reason I started playing the game and I had been putting off playing it for like 2 months at this point. Well, I did and uh...

lrMg4Sm.gif PMPHfeB.gif

I don't know if I'd call it "one of the best quest in all of gaming" like some people have, but in the context of Warframe itself it is pretty freaking nuts. It's not just that it's more cinematic than all the quests that came before it, it's not just the lore significance of the reveal or even the impact it has on the actual game. It's the sheer insanity of hiding this quest behind like 50 hours of gameplay. And apparently I got there pretty quickly because I often see reports of people getting to it around the 100+ hours mark. Games have a tendency to frontload their best content to hook you in right away, so this was a pretty ballsy move by Digital Extremes.

So yeah, I'm playing a lot of Warframe again. At the very least, I'll give a little push to get to the next quest ASAP because it's usually mentioned alongside Second Dream.

I left that one unfinished for the longest time because I was missing a resource for the last step. I finally completed it a few days ago and I log in pretty much every day for the daily reward and that idiot still seems to hate me. It MIGHT be because I let him bleed out a lot during missions. But in my defense, he's pretty fucking useless and gets himself killed a lot lol.

The loyalty thing seems fairly easy to recover just by petting him on the ship, though. What does annoy me is how he has like... bad DNA or something and you need to keep spending credits to buy stabilizers to keep him healthy.

I'm pretty far into the game at this point now, I did have a few problems with dying a lot. It seemed to me that bullets were magnetised to me or something lol. I know what you mean with the parachute mechanics. I hate how you have to hold the button to make it launch though, most of the time I use the wing suit which i find more forgiving to use. Great game but a few frustrations that try my patience sometimes.
