Thursday Next
Bloodborne is sexy af. Does Squadrons target where you look?
TheMightyEthan
No, you can target what's straight ahead of you, or you can cycle through targets with a button on the controller, and I also have an option turned on where if I shoot at something it will automatically target it. I played the whole game in 2D though, and now playing in VR I'm finding being able to look around dramatically improves my situational awareness. Also it's cool as shit.

I think I fucked myself over in trying to play Bloodborne by doing this. Bloodborne is still hovering in the back of my mind as something I'd like to play, but every time I think of actually playing it I'm like "yeah, but I'd rather play Death Stranding instead". Mister Jack
Death Stranding is such a strange game in that on paper a package delivery simulator sounds like the most boring thing ever but somehow it just gets its hooks in you. TheMightyEthan
Yes, I cannot explain why I like it, nor can I explain what the game is to anyone else without making it sound boring as hell.
Hot Heart
Some of my friends got back into Destiny 2 over the holiday break so I picked that up as well. The Beyond Light stuff is interesting and there's actually stuff happening in the story (they brought back the Exo Stranger and explained a bunch of stuff!) but I'm not as keen on the Stasis power as everyone else is. Don't get me wrong, it's powerful and all but a) there's not enough gear and such to support it (a lot of perks and exotics are designed around the "light" subclasses) so you can't do anything that interesting and b) it's no fun to fight against it, i.e. PvP. I'm also just a bit burnt out on the core gameplay loop of quests, repeating the same activities, etc. especially since they "sunset" a huuuge amount of content (seems they also ditched nearly all their Hollywood VAs to save on costs!) It needs something fresher than what we have, long-term. It's around this time there would've been "Destiny 3". This is not it. That said, I am enjoying stuff like dungeons and nightfalls with friends. There are some really funky environments and puzzles. Plus, there's a bit more depth and fun to be had with the mod system now. I also started playing GreedFall since it was the PS+ game and I was in the mood for something like it. Definitely get very strong vibes of old BioWare/Obsidian titles, in both good and bad ways, and I'm interested in the setting and mechanics. Mister Jack
I've really been making up for lost time with my VR headset. I got Gun Club VR for roughly six bucks on a PSN sale. At its core it's pretty much just a shooting gallery with a few different modes, but the real draw is the guns themselves. There's dozens to choose from and they're all quite realistic. Reloading, cocking, and switching firing modes is done manually with your own two hands. You yourself pump your shotguns after every round. When buying gun mods, you can even physically attach and detach them yourself, although there is an auto-equip option if you want to save time. The actual shooting ranges consist of bullseyes, action courses with wood cutouts that sometimes shoot back, and a zombie mode. If you want to play a shooter with set pieces and a storyline then maybe this isn't for you, but if you want to play with the most realistic guns that VR has to offer then this is where you want to look. The sale price was more than reasonable. Aside from that I'm also playing Trover Saves the Universe and god damn, this game is funny. Possibly one of the funniest games I've ever played. Gameplay-wise it's similar to Astro Bot in that you control Trover in platforming levels while you observe as a bystander and occasionally interact with things in the environment. Astro Bot's level design is more clever but Trover makes up for it with how hilarious it is. Of course, it's a very specific kind of humor that won't appeal to everyone. This might be the most profane game I've ever played and the language would make Grand Theft Auto blush. I've lost track of how many times I heard the F-bomb in just the first two levels alone, but if you like Rick and Morty then you'll probably like this too.

MetalCaveman
Bloodborne I was sure I'd get the Platinum with the last ending missing, turns out, I had completely forgotten about Spoiler The Pthumerian Queen So now I'm back to running chalice dungeons, much as I hate those. On the bright side, beast mode + pizza cutter = RIP AND TEAR. Bosses just melt even on NG+. Genshin Impact Got Ganyu! Been levelling up my team, traveller can now reach 60, though that's going to take a while, been completing some other quests too, current event might be a bit too much for my current party though. Mister Jack
You're gonna fucking hate that last chalice dungeon.
MetalCaveman
Is it worse than the defiled dungeon? That 50% decrease in hp is brutal.
Mister Jack
It's been a while so I don't remember the exact order, but I think there's three bosses you gotta fight with that HP decrease. If you already did all three then you've actually finished the worst of it.
Thursday Next
I'm also getting back into PSVR. Now I have a PS5, I've set the PS4 Pro+VR up in the home office (I didn't want to set it up in the lounge as i) It has way too many cables and the missus would have my head on pike; and ii) No HDR passthrough on the gen-1 VR box which means either even more cables so I can run a splitter, or unplugging stuff so I can play games with HDR. I'm playing through the last level of I Expect You To Die, and picked up Statik again, and (as Ethan knows) started Star Wars: Squadrons. For any who don't know, I Expect You To Die is a bond-esque escape the room game (the first level has you in a Blofeld-like villain's car, in the back of a plane trying to make your escape). It's really enjoyable, there are multiple ways to solve each of the missions, plus extra things to do to unlock stuff for your home base. Because every scenario involves you being sat down in a static environment, I've experienced no motion sickness issues, which is a boon. Statik is a puzzle game in the same spirit as Portal. You are being held in a mysterious test lab being asked to do things by an equally mysterious scientist. It lurches from Orwellian to surreal. Squadrons is amazing. Really nails the space fighter feeling. My one complaint is that it starts you with controls that are i) Not inverted, which for a flight sim type game is nuts; and worse ii) The left stick controls acceleration and roll, the right stick pitch and yaw. The second preset layout is called "Pilot" and has the sticks set up correctly with pitch and roll on the right and speed/yaw on the left. No idea why this isn't the default and it made me spend the first mission and a half hating the game. Now the bugs are ironed out though, I'm loving it. I'm on the last one now, and boy, there's challenging, there's hard, there's frustrating, cheap, bullshit, and THEN there's whatever this one is pulling, this is going to be a thing, specially because all my weapons are close range melee. Mister Jack
Oh yeah, I know the one you mean. That thing was so ridiculous I ended up having to just cheap it with one hit at a time over the course of probably 30 minutes. Defiled Chalice is bullshit. MetalCaveman
Resident Evil 7 Man this is a game, been playing in 15 minute chunks then taking a break to do other stuff. Spoiler Just made it to the main hall, got 2 of 3 dog head emblems. That fight on the garage was fun though, running over Jack a bunch of times was cool. TheMightyEthan
After I got the Death Stranding plat I was trying to decide what to play next, and I settled on The Order: 1886, since it's nice and short and will get something off my backlog. I bought it a while ago because the way Gamestop had structured a sale it was actually cheaper for me to buy an extra $9.99 used game than not, and I'd been curious about this game for a while so I threw it in. It's aggressively fine. I'm on Chapter 4 of 16, and enjoying it well enough, but I can see why you'd be disappointed if you were expecting some amazing experience. Since I wasn't expecting that though I'm perfectly happy with it. You're a steampunk knight fighting werewolves with retro-futuristic guns in late 1800's London, which is all I wanted. The visuals are... interesting. They worked really hard to make sure the image is as free of jaggies as they can, which results in a really soft image, but the overall effect at first glance is that even the actual gameplay looks like a prerendered cutscene. Like the kind of cutscene where the dev prerenders it using the actual game engine, but with all the settings cranked way up, and antialiases the hell out of it. I say "at first glance" because the effect doesn't hold up to close scrutiny. It uses a combination of 4x MSAA and temporal post-process antialiasing to get the smooth effect, but at the core it's still just a 1080p game, and there's only so much they can do. They've succeeded in eliminating jaggies, except on some very fine details in some surfaces, but at the cost of introducing different sorts of artifacts. Edges, especially on narrow lines like wrought iron fences and gun barrels and stuff, get kind of a wavy look, which changes as the camera moves around. It's also really noticeable on enemies when they're kind of far away and so not very many pixels, where it causes a weird blobiness, like you're looking at them through wavy glass, or a smudge on your glasses. Honestly, the thing it reminds me most of is playing old SNES or GBA games in an emulator with 2x Super Sai filtering turned on to smooth it out. It looks smoother, but it adds in a level of weirdness to edges. The most bizarre thing though, and I have no idea what's causing it, is that as you move, any vertical surfaces in front of you warp around really strangely. I'm assuming it's something to do with the temporal post-processing, but it's not just edges, it's the whole surface, so it ends up looking like it's waving or rippling. Almost like you're looking at everything through heat haze, but less pronounced. Very strange. I might try to take a video of it next time it's especially bad. None of that really detracts from the game though, other than the weirdness of the enemies I pretty much only notice it when I'm just walking around through environments, not while anything interesting is happening. *Edit - The more I think about it, the more I think this game could really benefit from a PS4 Pro 4k upgrade. I know the softness is intentional, they were going for a film-like look, but at 4k they could keep the softness and just the weird artifacts from all that anti-aliasing wouldn't be nearly as apparent. Mister Jack
Man, magic is so much more useful in the VR version of Skyrim. Having the ability to aim independent of the camera position changes everything.
